Corrtsptibnttc, Letter from Fraris Qratmuck. Tbctjmssii, Jan. 28, '56. Mr. Editor. About a month or o ago, 1 mbI you ft superficial aeoount of our late war, and we then hoped it waa all over for this winter; and winter we have a fall; snow storms and severe cold weather. Ever since the 15th of December, the nvrcury has stood at leaas 16 degrees below aero. We think often of some of friends and acquaintances in Iowa, who have said so much of that country in letters published, but it is my opinion that they spoke too soon. I pity those new settlers who are not well provided for thetaaelws and their stock. On the 16th of January was election Uy lor the Free Boil party. There was some trouble and bloodshed RgRin, on the border of Missouri, tve we are informed. This tire, two Missourisns nod on- Free Soiler were killed. We looked with hope on Congress to do something, and make tome law to stop murder sad bloodshed out here, hut there they arc, playing humbug for party purposes, sndjhere we are, driveu to extremes. Iteannot remain much longer as it is. All the officers are pro-slavery, some of them mere boys. They hate snd despise us. They are entirely independent of us, Rnd do rs they please with us. We get desparate and we don't care for our lives, sod other consequences. The Free Soiler in this Territory, and the other party in Missouri, are preparing for another battle, to come off rs soon as the season will permit. But whst harts as most, is to see that tome of our friends snd a cbrtain ABtr at home givss aid Rnd comfort to our enemies, the Missourians. Even the ed itor of the American insists that the officers should enforce these bws rs tuey exist; that is to tar, that these officers should enforce fraud, humbug and tyranny. The Missourians acknowledge themselves that these laws were put upon as by fraud, and you know, and all the world knows, that anything obtained by fraud it ?oid, Rnd if these Irwb, as they are, would, and could be enforced, there would ot be prisons enough in the Territory to bold all the Free Sollen. The border Missourians have often offered their hemp to hang us. I wish yon were here, Mr. Editor, among us. You have, no doubt, often beard of Squatter Sotoreignty, but you don't kaow much about it yet. Come out hers, and.travel a month over these fine green prairies, with all kinds of flowers, ana the groves of timber, and when night comes, take your lasso, stake yoar horse, cook and est whatever you get, spread your blankot for a bed, and take your saddle for a pillow, aad you will be a belter judge of law! According to the statement of the Mssourians, there is no such a party as the Free Soil party in the Territory. Thee call us all Abolition int, and we ! ft ss mm a r- iri'iiii-a i . u 1 1 it on vw ;t surplus of office seekers at home, send st.- U . - I . .1 I mom um lit t v . mu.i uirm curve tne 1 Abolitionists, sod they will ue appoiut- j ed Mswefsffiee tat m hnrt timer. On the 15th of January we had an , election for Governor and other State ! aad County officers, and 1 am sorry to say that our ticket was split into a Fr Soil and an abolition party. It is said that tbe Abolitionists took tho advantage of placing themselves in offico at the Convention. Oar Oovernor. Shnnnon, has left for Washington City, no doubt to excuse himself for his conduct, and he will probably resign. These men. Gov. Reeder and Gov. Shannon, made great mistaken in their official conduct, and any man Government may send out here wilt fall into the same error, if ha is not aware of the ditches and traps laid for him byjtho border ruffians of Missouri. For the first he should avoid the many compliments and publie dinners in Missouri. These Mis xmrians tske more interest in the Governors of Kansas Territory, and pay more homage to him, than to their own, and to be certain of their game they recommend him, and put him into their oage, tbe formerly Method is . Shawneeo'Mission. only 2 miles from Westport, and the State line, and there is the political hot-house of the Proalavery party, and there ho la surrounded by Pro-slavefy men, and they lead and guide him on from one mistake and wrong into another, and before be is aware of it, he is so in their Eower that he cannot extricate himself oaorably, and therefore they have to die politically, resign, or be killed any how. , I xt is generally oeueyeu mm sposen . ol out Sere, that toe South and these ; Missourians, and President Piorce, and part of his Cabinet, and the head men or me uemocmuc puny nau a private understanding about the Territorial affairs, and that we had to submit. It shows and leaks out everywhere. Wby has our President never issued any proclamation to slop these Missourians from oming here to do ail tho mishief they please? Are we not as good rs the citizens of Cansdit and Mexico? If some American citisena had intended to go in bands to these countries, to commit these depredations, Presidsnt Pierce would have long ago done something to prevent it. This day, February 6th, snow from 11 to t feet deep, and plenty falling. We have had no news for about rwo weeks. Yours truly, FRANCIS GRASMÜCK. Our friend must not class us with that "certain party." While they insist4that the laws ought to be enforced they "approve" them, and the men who enacted them. We insist that it is the the d'tty of the executive officers to enforce all laws. But tbe first duty in this case, is to aim at an immediate repeal. Meanwhile,' .we exhort our good friend and all bis associates to stand firm. Resistance to tyrants is a duty we all owe to God. We will 3 i v . . I , send you help n.xt October, if not earlier. with your desire, I state: That
in the summer, about the 20th June, 1836, Colonel A. Burr came to Port Richmond Hotel, Staten Island, where he took board, near which I then resided, M aUo did the re In live and friend of Col. Barr. Judge 0. Edward The Co). (Burr) being r trIao a at m a w l ft. T ft (.tudinamo. in k-eDie ucaun, juuiEdwards solicited me. as often as I conveniently could, to visit him and administer the consolations ot religion to him, which, he said, was desired by Colonel Burr, and would bo agreeable to him. Accordingly, from that time until the 13th September, 1836, tho day on which he died at tbe said Tort rwchmond House, I visited him as a minister of the gospel onee or twice a week. At these consecutive interviews I was uniformly received and entertained by him with his sccustomed politeness and urbanity of manner. The time spent with him at each interview, which was an hour, more or less, was chiedy employed in religious conversation adapted to his declining health, his feeble statt) of body, and his advanced age, concluded by prayer to Almighty God for the exercise of bis great mercy, the influence of his holy spirit and divine blessing; in all which he appeared to take an interest and be pleased, and particularly would thank me for the prayers I offered up in his behalf, for my kind offices, and the interest I took in his spiritual welfare, saying it gaes him pleasure to see me snd hear my voice. When I reminded him of the advantages he had enjoyed, of his hono)T.! and pious ancestry, vis: his fathe' a minister of the gospel and President of the eollege at Princeton, New Jersey, and his mother a deeendsnt of tbe lesrned and celebrated divine. Johnathan Edwards and that doubtless in. .ii v prayers had goae up, to Heav en from the hearts of his parents for his well-being and happiness, it seemed to affect him and when 1 asked him as to his viows of the Holy Soriptures. lie responded, "they were the most perfect systems of truth the world had ever seen." So that judging from his own declaration and his bvliarior to mo as his spiritual adviser, he was sot an Atheist nor a Deist. I did not administer the Holy Sacrament to him, nor did he suggest and request mo to do it. In rogard to other topics, in tbe course of repeated conversations, he remarked that he was near Omars! MunlgoHHJ when ho fell at Quebec, and that, notwithstanding that disaster if the army had pushed on they would have succeeded, e e e a At my last interview with him, about twelve o'clock at noon, the day ho parted this life, about two o'clock P. M., as aforesaid, September 13, 1 836, I found him, as usual, pleased to see me, tranquil in mind and not disturbed by bodily pain. Observing a paleness and change in his countenance and his pulse tremulous, fluttering and erratio, I asked him how ho felt. He replied, not so well as when I last saw bim. I then said, "Colonel, I do not wish to alarm you, but judging from tbe state of your pulse, your time with us is short. Me re --m m .. piiuu, "I am aware ot lt. 11 was then near one o'clock P. M , and bis mind and memory seemed perfect. IHaid to him; "In this solemn hour of your apparent dissolution, believing as you do in the Sue red Soriptures, tur accountability to Uod, Ut un us you now you teel in view ot approaching eternity; whether you have good hope through grace that all your sins will be pardoned, and that Got! will in m r y pardon you for the sake of the merits and righteousness of his beloved Son, our Lord Jesus Christ, who in love suffered and died for us the agonising, bitter death of the cross by whom alone we can have tbe only sure hops of aslvation ?" To which he aaid, with deep and evident emotion, "On that subject 1 am coy." By which I understood him to mean that on a subject of such magnitude and momeutous interest, touching tho assurance of his salvation, ho felt coy (cautious, as the word denotes,) to express himself in full confidence. With his usual cordial concurrence snd manifest desire, we kneeled in prayer before the throne of heavonly grace, imploring God's mercy and blessing. He turned in his bed, and putting himself in sn bumblo devotional posture, and seemed deeply engaged in the religious service, thanking me, as usual, for the prayer made for him. Calm and composed, I recommended him to the mercy of God, and to the word of his Jgrace with a last farewell. At about two o'clock, P. M., without a struggle, he breathed his last. With respects, P.J. VANPELT. D. D. The Bible Tabooed. The work of banishing the Bible from our Public Schools, in obedience to the dictates of the Romish hierarchy has begun in Indiana. Oer fellow citizens of Edinburg have done themselves much credit by the erection of a suitable edifice for graded sshool purposes. It is rather college-like in appearance. A Principal has been selected and the machinery got to work. But a firebrand has been cast into the community, wrvr.h now threatens the peace and peiio.ps the very existence of the scbooN As we have learned is, the matter stands thus: At a recent meeting of th School Board, a resolution was offered that the opening exercises of the schools should consist, in part, of reading a portion of the Scriptures by the principal. A protracted discussion followed. Outside influence was brought to bear on the Board by I the special pleading of a prominent citJ ' isen, (whose politics may bo easily sraaassa.) who. while bearing tne profession of a Church member, made a set tpetch against the use of the Bible in Amerkan Sehoolt! The discussion over, the rote followed, and the resolution was lost! This was regarded as a lest vute on both sides. The "prominent citizen" has, we learn, written an article for Beebse'a paper, in wbich the resalt is claimed as a "triumph . a. ex . u .at . SSBSBSSS .... ,1 political) over priestcraft," over
preachers," who wished to "crowd their sectarian Bibles into the Common Schools." There was one Trustee absent, who
is opposed to the action of the Board, and whose influence and vote may yet change this deep disgrace. There arc some things which make this case one of peculisr malignity. It was not a proposition to make the Bible a class-book, buts'mply that the teacher, a competent man, should read a select portion without note or comment. This is voted down! The various Protestants of the town must hold their peace. Theio is a handful of Papists who must be petted and patted like a spoiled colt, lest they kick out of the traces. Our school books are to be selected by Roms b a foreign Prince, whose robes are sti stained by the blood of the murdered Italian Republicans. The mandate has gone forth, snd you, Protestant freemen mutt submit! What say you, Dr. Larrabee, te the movement? If agbin elevated to the post of Superintendent of Public Instruction, shall the influence of that of lien be given to such high-handed outrages upon the majorities of tbe land? Also, what say you as the edi tor of the so-called State Organ of the Old Liners? Free Democratic Convention The Free Democrats held a Convention in Indianapolis on the 22d Inst., and after appointing J. M. Tilford President, and J. H. Batty Secretary, tho fol owing resolutions were adopted: Rssofiwf, That when this meeting adjourn it adjourn to meet with the People's party on tbe first of May next. Judge Wright of Logansport offered the following resolution, which was adopted: Rfsoli'vef, That wo sympathize with the settlers of Kansas, and that wo will aid them with men and money That this meeting will appoint a Committee of seven who shall take such steps as will give aid to our friends in Kansas. The following persons were appointed tho said Committee: Doot. Ritohny, Johnson eounfy; Ovid Butler, Marion Judge Wright, Cass " A. 0, St tphens, Putnam " Calvin Fletcher, ten., Marion " Henry S. Luno, Montgomery " James H. Lane, Ripley " M. Veaoh offered the following resolution which was adopted : Resolved, that the people of the several; counties favorable to thu cause, he requested to appoint com mitlces to raise funds, subjuot to the order of the central committee. On motion of Jt dge Wright the meeting adiourned. J. M. TILFORD, Prss'l. J. H. Batty. See'y. INDIANA BANK NOTE LI8T. COERXCTKD WEEKLY BY I . - .
