Where timber in to he failed and hewn, an ax is bitter then a Bible. Nor is it detracting from the merit ot the Book to says so. But while a thief is picking your pocket, or a burglar ie prying open your door, would you 1 treat him to a bible or a police offioer? When then, these ignorant fellows saw courage added to thrift, a culm, un boastful but inmovable determination to defend their rights, and to di rsther then yield one hair's bredth of irinciple. it inspired both reepeot and ear; and there can be no question, in the minds of any who know what such sort of men are made of, that this armed com ago of the Kansas emigrants, did more to produce a recognition of their rights, than a hundred sermon or a thousand bibles. And we any again, and with more etnphnsis than ever before, that when men have been left ignorant and uneducated, when Northern moral imbecility has left them without the hust respect for the righto of Northern men, when drunk with whisky, and urged on by brawling leaders, it is no time to deal with them by bibles. That work should have been done before. That being neglected, and the crew of infuriate wretches being on the eve of a murderous assault, the word end the rifle are now in order. , By them only can the danger be averted and rights maintained.
