Whsn called upon for an expression on any snbject, (ul was during the 4faMttta before the Franklin County Agrieaitaial Society, on the 1st of De ls.)! feel telly authorised to my views ttnnn ich subjects, tNnfaftjt for others to draw their conchwons si to the correctness of my poJest here, per .nit me to remark, thai jour in published account of the pweeefTmgw referred to, you make me to have essd, thai I bad been engaged in the cultivation of hedges five or six years, which is quite mistake. I base) only been engaged in the busiwess Ar some three years; bat I bats closely observed sad given my ties) to the sobjeet fire or six years, and draw say seachssioas from aetnei experience and observation cornpropriety or impropriety of the use of Che Oeege Orange as e hedge has become s question of intereVierredly claims the sUenof the tanning somaaanity at presIt Is very evident that the high repaaajon of the Osage Orange, as a badge plant, has induced many per sane to engage in the cultivation of hedges, that would not, under correct iiaytsset'ius, have attempted it; and I d rcadfly eooelsde that the sooner neb erroneous impressions sre corrected, the better lbs community. Test know the plant is represented as being very tenacious of life, and in every respect to admirably adapted to that little else than cutting Unrequired to sc ape rfect fence; aad &at, too, in a brief space of time. r, I profess to bsve had some experience in the cultivation of the Oeege Orsngc, for the last three summers; and moat assuredly my experience has ted me to quite different conclusions from those entertained by Mr. John Oage, of Illinois, as set forth in his article copied ia tbe American, of Dee. Slat By reference to the article in queturn, it will be observed that the writir takes the editor of the Horticulturist to Ines, f ,t bering asserted it as hie opinion that. "In n vast portion of cssss, the Ossge Orange, wühmd gram ettmrion, will prove a disappointment,' aad in order to correct such impression, remarks: "I planted two maVe last year, and have planted eight miles this year; after my ground was prepared, my men set 40 rode a day. 1 ge four or five times over it ia the summer with the cultivator and three or fenr tknea with the hoe, enough to keep tbe weeds down all the time; and after the first year, I cut it twice with a aevthe, aad it takes four or five years to make a fence, costing one day's labor for forty rods in planting, as much for hoeing and cultivating' as it would t hoe a row of corn, and no ssy s half a day for hoeing and fatty rods yearly, which for five years wouldbe two and a half days for forty rods, at ft a day would be It will thus be observed that the of planting oat, cultivating, easting the hedge, for the first years, is estimated at 13,60 per 40 reds: comparing and making the cost identical with that of the cultivation of a row of corn of tbe same kngth. With such and similar estimstea of die cost of hedges, is it any marvel why so many ragged ones meet the eye, wherever the Ossge Orange is be ing cultivated? I think not. I have heretofore ventured the opin ion, end feel now to repeat the same, thai more than two-thirds of si the Oaage Orange hedges now planted oil, will prove a nuisance to the culti vator and the sooner such hedges are destroyed, the better. That the Osage Oranna is tenacious of life, and grows more certainly than moat other plants, I readily ad mit; but that it will grow and answer the purpose designed, with as little Is bor lo cultivating, aa ia beatowsd ap on a row of corn the tame length, is aa aaresacttsMa position, Mad cannot bold good, in more then one esse in s thousand, at moat. by him. to prove the grf at utility and economy of bed ing; I am still of the opinion that those who hav o plenty of rail timber, will find the common rail fence cheaper and better than any hedges I have yet met with The question of hedging, I regard as a question legitimately belonging to those who are destitute of tbe common
fencing material: and rest assured ninety-nine oot of every hundred now engaged in tbe cultivation of hedges Will coincide with me in such belief. I acknowledge myself ss standing directly interested with those who are now, or will shortly be compelled' to resort to some other mode of fencing than that of tbe common rail fence; and when necessitated to do so, it surely is the part of wisdom, to commence operations in such a way aa will be likely to secure the object in view. As a matter of course it is much easier to cultivate hedges in some localities than others, yet experience proves conclusively that any neglect in their cultivation, (at least for the first two years,) is more readily discovered than almost anything else, to which attention is now directed. I would say, therefore, friendly readera, if yoa have any thoughts of engaging in the hedge enterprise next spring, be sure that your other arrangements are euch as to afford time for the undertaking. Prepare your hedge row in good order, plant out no more than you can pay atriot attention to; watch diligently the depredations of moles, and if any plant ahowa signs of failing to grow, be sure and insert a vigorous one in its stead, before the season is too far advanced; cultivate frequently; hoe when necessary; and at the expiration of five years should you find yourself in possession of a good live fence, be checrfulin admitting the fact that, "without great attention," yours would also have proven a "disappointment." (From the Indiana Journal.) as mine scgaas. Messe. Editors: We wish to call the atention of a portion of your readers to a fact which may soon be verified to their advantageAfter the hard freezing of all the last few weeks, we will be likely to have a good ''sugar season" It is frequently the case, that a thick crust of ice is found upon the water in the trough or other v easel con tain ing it. Sometunes this ice is so thick as to re quire an ax to cut it away that lau water may be gathered Every body says that "freezing sweetens the water," and so the tanner, (wedo not mean every one) breaks up the ioe in tbe trough, and throws it, with the water, into the kottle, to boil down into the sugar. Now, as a great saving of labor, time, and tho wood, we suggest that the ice be thrown away, and the water collected and boiled without it We agree with the common saying, that "freezing sweetens tbe water' but no one supposes that fountain water will become sweet by freezing. Then we concludo that tho sugar, ! ia the process of freezing, retreats to toe bottom or centre of the vessel and leaves a portion of tbe pure water in which it was dissolved to form the ice. This, if understood, is, very likely, one of Nature's processes of labor-saving. Just think of amount of hetit required to melt the ice, until which time you get no increase of heat in your kettle above 32 degrees, no matter how hot your fire. Then in addition to this, yoa have to lose nil tho heat required to convert the water contained in the ice into vapor. Wo merely make these sugges tions now to call the attention of farmers and others interested to the subject. If the view here expressed is not correct, let some one who understands the subject better give the true kuowledce. We confess we have not given the subject much thought; but our impression is, it is worth some con.iiderntion. If labor is not money, it certainly is its equivalent in these days. 8. W. RncilKV.
