Thin I be here to bo the comraonly receircd ojin. on; yet I beliero facta will ahow coneluircly, that it ia an erronecu ono. "Now, in order to teat It, Ukoa hull mtlo airing. To male afguod rail fenco of this length, there will bo about 350 panncls; and in oider to csako it accurc, it willrcquiro ten rail to aach pannel, ten times 350 will make 3,500, the number of raila required 'to mko tho fence. At n Tcry moderst estimate, the timber from which tho raila aro nade, i worth 675; then to eat the timber, make tho rails, an J build the fence, nt ono dollar per hundred, for making and laying up tho rails it will ecst C35; then board and horao feed whilst doing the work, will bo worth at least 915 more. Theae estimate will be found by calculation to b Tcry low; and yet tho aggregate coat of half a mile of fence will be 0115,00 Now, what would a hedgo of this length coat ? The aprouti at 92.00 per thousand, would cost 911. One , . a mm with m trooa team can put u.e grouud in good orJer. for actting the eproub, in one day, which ia worth aay C2.50. Now this is n liberal estimate of tho cot of an Oaage Orange hedge. By subtraction, it will bo found that the real eo&t of a common fence, hal a milu in ' length, exceeds that of i hedge, tho round auna of C5 dollars, and yet, ; in tho face of theso facts, model farmers think that 'a rail fence costs leas money.Jand shrewd editors blindly endorse tho opinion, aa truth, by calling the attention of farmers to the article in question.' I . havo no doubt that it would have been worth more than 20 to me if I had known it twenty years ago. Most farmers havo a surplus of stalo fat and dirty grease, which caa be mado into good candles at a trifling expense. I kept. both tallow and lard candles through tho last summer, tho lard candles standing tho heat tho best and burning "quite as well, and giving as good a light as tho tallow onc3. Directions for making good candles fiom lard: For 12 lbs. of lard, tako 1 lb. saltpetro, and 1 lb. of alum; mix them and pulverize them; dissolve the saltpetre and alum in a gill of boiling water, pour the compound into the lard beforo it is quite all melted; stir tho whole until it boil?, skim oft what rises; let it simmer until the water is boiled out, or till it ccasos to throw off steam; pour off tho lard as soon a3 it is dono, and clean the boiler whilo it is hot. If tho candles are to bo run, you cm commence immediately; if to bo dipped, let the lard cool first to a cake and then treat it as you would tallow Cor. of the N.E Far.
