Tha recent murder of Dow o which, and tbw proceedings growing out of it, Gov. bhannoa has taken ad. Tantaa to represent tho Pre -State settlers of Kftrms ri in n state of re bellion is by do means a lingular event in the turbulent history of that infant Trrritorf and of th "border ruEUns" who hare taken its affairs in cbarjre. After the Spring election of 1055. several uf these personages waited on Got. Iteeder and threatened to hang him unless he .would give certificates of election to the I'ro-birery men ehosea to the ' Trrrijorul Lisliture by tho voles of the MUuomi tnob it's reply was: "ueniiemen. two or three ot you can murder op, but a le gion connot comp! me to do that "Which tnj conscience does not approve.' A similar attempt to frighten uov .Reeder," and to eomrel hira to recant some statements ot his during a visit to the East, was afterward mado by tb reuoatable Suintfellow himself; nor tvers there wantinjr other similar occurrence, oat of which the tele graph from St. Louis manufactured reports now that .Gov. Heeder had been flo'-ed, and now that he had been morde red. On Saturday, April H, 1 855, a mob of tome two hundred ruffians from PUtte County, Missouri, the residence of ciringfellow and Atchison, assem bled at Paikville, Missouri, and at tacked the office of The Luminary, newspaper published there, and which, because it did not implicitly subscribe to the border-raflii an operations, was accused of Free-State proclivities. They destroyed the fixtures and threw the types and presses into the rwr.The editors and publishers, J. S. Park and Woo. S. Patterson, escaped perBona violence at the time, but they were obliged to fly the State. Mr. Patterson is now ja this vicinity, giving lectures on ihi conspiracy to make Kansas a Slave S'ate. The pecuniary interests of the inhabitants of Parkrille, of whicb town Mr. Park was the founder and pnncipal proprietor, imperatively required his temporary return thither for the purpose of executing conveyances and releases and other business acts. No sooner was he known to be there than the Platte County rufSans ferociously threatened to march upon the town and to destroy it and him ; nor could the people of Parksville find any security except in a military organization, and a compact for mutual defense similar to that lately entered into by the people of Lawrence. , On the 30th of April, sixteen days after the attack upon The Luminary. at a political gathering at Leavenworth City after a question had been put by the Chair, Malcolm Clark, a leading Pro-Slavery politician, cried out, "We have the majority," to which a lawyer named McCrea responded, "It's a lie." Upon that Clark track McCrea with a club, whereupon, recovering a little from the stunning effects of the blow, McCrea drew a revolver and shot Clark dead.McCrea fled instantly, hotly pursued by Clark's friend, who saught to kill him on the spot ; but he ran into the river and found protection under the bank, whence he was presently taken by his friends and delivered to the commander of Fort Leavenworth for custody and protection. Anywhere else his life would not have been safe. Thus balked in their attempt to mur der McCrea, on the 17th of May following- number of border ruffians from Missouri crossed the river at Leavenworth and seized Mr. Phillips, the law partner of McCrea, and one of the most intelligent and respectable eiüxens of the place, who had given additional offense by contesting the election in his district, in consequence of which a new election had ben or dered by Gov. Reeder. Assisted by a number of other ruffians resident in the town, 'and before the body of the people of the place had time to collect and act,, they carried Phillips across the river his friends being unable to follow for want of a boat and took him some miles inland on the Missouri aide, when they shaved half his head stripped him naked, tarred and feathered fata, rode him on a rail a - mile and a half, put him up at a moc auction, and bid him off to a negro at ens dollar. Phillips, however, effected his escape from these villains and returned to Leavenworth, where he still remains, in spite of all the threats of further violence against him if he should sot fly the Territory. But now mark the difference of civil procedure iajhese two cases of Phillips and McCrea. No attempt whatever was made to inflict any- punishment oa lbs lynchers of Phillip Mr. McCrea,on the other hand, undergoes a long and rigorous imprisonment, first is the fort and then in the jail ; a bill of murder is found against him by a packed jury, after a more honest one Lad refused to find any; and when at last he comes into court to be tried he finds among the counsel within the bar and among the officers of that tribunal, including tho clerk of the Court no less than four persons who had beeu concerned in the abduction and lynching of Phillips. This fact was afterward brought to the notice of the Court by sworn affidavit; but we have Bot yetkarned that anv action was taken upon it. We are happy to say tbatMcCrca, after many other points had been ruled against him, has succeeded In obtaining a change of venue which operates, however, to defer the triil and crolonir his imprisonment which if ia a county jail of tho most wretched description. On the SCUh of May, three days af ter the outrage on Phillip," several members of a secret Pro-Maery as sociation of Missouriana, called the Blue Ladies, visited Osawatomie, in Kansas Territory, and seized a Mr. Paiker oa tho charge of being an Ab olitionist. They took his nllu and broko it over a stump, mounted him oa a mule and carried him some distance into the woods. They thn took measures to hang him without iudts or iurr; but upon his anggest. ia r that he ouirht to be allowed to irjk for bimsdlf. they suffered hira to do so. After he had mado his statement tho company were about nmllr divided, one-half .dinir with Parker, and the other half with Kir by, the leader of the gang. Soon, however, one of the company handed Parker a revolver cupped und cocked, after which Kirby saw fit to hold Li peace. , l'arker was finally rchasid, but was obliged, however, to give up his claim. . ßince then tho Ue v. Tai lco Butler, a Methodist clergyman.
1 J . r. the chargu of .Freo Soil doctrines. Similar to this was the case of the Her. William' C. Clark, a Methodist clergyman from Portsmouth, N. I! and lately resident in Kansas. On voyage on the steamboat Polar Star, down the Missouri in the month of September,1 he expressed some sentiment on the subject of negro equality not areeablo to the Mlisouri rußians on board, in concjurnce of which the cry was raised "kill Lim! kill him! kill the d d Abolitionint!" Hi face was beaten to pieces, und a chair bro ken over his head, after which tho vMiHain I who JinU pocKi-teu Ills passago raouey, which he did not refund,) put him on kbore on the river bank, about 160 miles from St. Louis, leaving tolind his way thither as lie could. Oa tho 31st of October, one Pat Laujjhlin, an Irish lickspittle the same fellow whose name has figured in our recent dispatches, and whom the Fret Slate men were accused of desinin to kill having cot into nn altercation and quarrel with one Col lins about certain revelations which Pat had pretended to make of a Freeotate secret military organization. Loghlirt took hin opportunity to shoot Collins through the heart. - To this. not to mention many lesser outrages in driving Free State men from their claims.) labt of all, .has teen added the murder of Dow, when upon occa sion has been taken by Gov. Shannon to proclaim a rebellion in Kansas. In all these numerous cases of violence and bloodshed, the only le gal proceedings that have taken plac. it is to be observed, have been direct ed against the Free State men. In every case, that of the murder of Dow, liovernor Shannon, not content with protectiug murderer, causes process to be issued to Arrest the witnesses against him. and because the neonle of Lawrence do not choose to submit o ------ r to such sort of arrests, he proclaims tbem rebels and telegraphs to the i resident tor military aid. . Five Wives and six Husbands. One of the last tnmbers of the Bos ton Traveler says: "A few days since . an old man of sixty-one yeirs applied at the office of the city register, for the fifth marriage certificate. His intended beide is but twenty-four.it being her first marriage. This is the only case in the knowledge of the person who keeps the register of a fifth marriage. Last year one man applied for his fourth marriage certificate, and during that year more men were married for the third time than women. There is, however, a wom an, in this city, of about forty "years of age, who is now living with her sixth buband. She was. married at the age of thirteen, and when fourteen was a widow. At the expiration of the third year she was married to her third husband. She has had but three children." . "pRXPArMKXT or , Postagk." In regard to the provision of the late law by which all letters sent between places within the United States aro required to be prepaid, we understand inquires are made at the Department as to bether it applies to letters to be sent to reign countries; and if so whether stamps or stamped envelopes only can be used in the prepayment of the ialter class of letters. 1 he answer is. that tho lata law in no respects affects letters for foreign countries. These will be treated as heretofore. v here pre payment on them is required, cither stamps or money may be used. To certain foreign countries, as will be seen by the table of foreign postages in the hand of the postmasters, prepay ment is optional. 1 be act of the 3d of March, last refered to, has no refer ence to printed matter. Wmthimjton Union. Vallktte vs. The Whitc Water Canal Compaxt. The motion to appoint a Receiver in thU case, about which there han been at one time or another a deal of argument and trouble, has at last been settled. Yesterday Judge Huntington granted the motion, and a Receiver is to be appointed, who retains all receips of the Canal, except for the expenses necessary to keep it in use Journal. ITiey should bo fieely utaen in tne anrutg of the year, to purify the blood and prepare the system for the change of seasons. An occasional doso stimulates the stomach and bowels into healthy action, and restores the appetite and vior. They purify the blood, send, by their stimulant action on the circulatory system, renovate the sUngth of the body, and restore the WTutcd or (Uncased energies of the whole organism. Hence un occaaioneJ Ooae ia advantageous, even though no serious derangement exist ; but unnecessary dosing should never be carried too far, 83 every purgative niedirine reduces tho strength, when taken to excee. ' This remedj has won for itself stich notoriety from it eures of every variety of pulmonary disease, that it is entirely unnecessary to recount tho evidences of its virtues in any community where it has been employed. So wide is the field of its usefulness, and so numerous the cacs of iU cures, that almost every section of the country abounds in persons publicly known, who hav been restored from alarming and even desperate di.ea.se cf the lungs by its use.
