It is a remarkable combination of mechanical duplicity and poorer, fur, while it can bo adjusted and put into operation by a very boy, it can bo cade to reduce corn and cob to any degree of fineness desired, with great rapidity. Among the other considerations . that com cend the "Littlo Giants" to tho.se Interested, they do not cost a very great sum of money, , and are made of dliTurent st2.?3. THE OS.lUi: OUA.1UE. There i3a grcat interest felt at the present time in hedge plants, and the great question is, what variety is the best for general fencing. Tho Hawthorn, Uuckthorn, and Privet, eich has its admirers, as the O-ngc Orange. It appears that Prof. Turner, of Jacksonville, Illinois, was the first one who introduced the Osage Or? nngo into tho North, llo remarks: , . "The Osago Orange thus far has more than met the most sanguine expectations of its early friends ; nnd so far as regards tho great object in view, u good titter, adaption to climate, and variety of soil, hardiness, easy propagation and cheapness, it ia all that can be desired. It, is armed with tho severest thorns, and will not spread . from the root. Tho wood also contains an aromatic oil which renders it m indcstructable by time, or insects, ns tho Cypress." Tho editor of tho Ohio Cultivator, nays: "Every j ear's cxperifcuco and obst-rvatiou increases our confidence in . tho Osago
LOrange, cs the best ; hedo plant that has been discovered in this or any other country. .The doubts which some persons entertain in regard to its power to withstand severe cold, have been removed by its enduring threo or four past winters as far, north as central New York and Massachusetts ; and tho unusually severocold ol the present winter, (20 degrees below zero, ) has not materially injured tho plants in Ohio, In our exchange papers and tho let ters we receive,-the testimony of all who havo given this plant a fair trial is dacidedly in its favor and the conviction is daily gaining ground, that as farmors bocome acquainted with tho advantages and management ' of the Osngo Orango Hedge and timber, becomes scarce, this modo of fencing will bo generally adopted in this country." Tho fall season . for planting being past, thoso who desire to make a trial of this 'hedge can sow the seed in tho spring, which is tho best time. We shall give full directions in March next, for sowing the seed, transplanting, and general management: The seed is procured in Texas, where tho plant grow3 in profusion. No seed, wo believe," has ever been rroduced at the North. It is necessarily somewhat dear in price. We have n few bushels, direct from Texas, sent to us, for sale, at the rto of $24 per bushel, or 61 per quart. Ed. iSorthcrn Farnur. ciiA.f;r. of ir.ED ran jionsr.s. The kind of food for animals should be frequently changed. A hore, long kept on horts, will be afiected by a fever in his feet and legs, producing a result similar to founder. Shorts, corn meal, or cob meal, should never be given, except iu a mixed state, with cut hay, or straw. This will require tbnm to eat slower, and tho food is better prepared for digestion. If given alone, it ferments rapidly in tho stomach, produces a general fever, injures the digestive powers, and finally produces a stiffness throughout tho limbs. When these rusults aro discovered, the remedy is u change of food. Continued (ceding on oats, alone, will produce the a m.o results as shorts, ormeal; and many a founder is caused by it, us well as feeding, cr drinking when the horse is warm. If necessity compels a person to feed a horso on shorts, A I corn moai, oars, or cod meai, a supply of salt should bo added, to prevent fermentation in tho stomach. Ohio Farmer. oojd nr.nnDY mit tout hot in Take equal parts of strong plug tobacco aud blue vitriol, pound forpouud; cut and soak tho tobacco 2 1 hour, in just water enough to cover it ; pulverize and add tho blue vitriol, also add about onj gill cf spirits of terpentine. With a sharp knife, cut away and expose all the infected parts of the foot. Ho double sure in this here lies the secret of fueeess. The failures with this remedy result from not using the knife sufiuiently. Tho diseased parts must be exposed fnlly to the action of tho medicine by Mr knife. Apply tho remedy to every foot and every sheep iu tho flock, iamo and sound together. Itepcat the process once in five or hix days, and always turn into a fresh pasture, if possible, until a cure is v fleeted. In slight affections one or two applications will suffice ; in chronic cases it will require repeated attacks to dislodge the enemy. Coupled with perseverance and a thorough use of the knife, this remedy never has fail ed. lux. To Keep-Aitles. Pack them in dry saw aust, or dry sand, hcad ibein upiu a flour barrel, and keep them in a very dry, ' cool place.
OltCllAIlD! .' Amocg tho operations of farming, a gocd orchard should cot be neglectedv If you have no orch-i ard, so t one out, and be careful to set out nono but the best trees. They should be set two rods apart' each way ; and keep the ground looso by plan' iug or towing. The mauncr of icuewing and renovating an old orchard depends very much on the situation of tho trees. Trees that havo been pruned by an inexperienced hand, ' where largo branches havo been taken off in May or June, and large ho!e3 have been rotted into the bodies of them, ( us they surely will, if trimmed at that tlmo of
year, ) may a$ well bo cut down, Kr they aro past all liculthlul recovery. Other trees m.lV bo renewed by taking all tho old limbs off, two ( r threo feet from tho body; leaving tho new, shoots to form a new, top, whichjnay be grafted with good sucoe&s. ' Take off the old, nmgh b-ir'rf, and loosen tho oil. October, November ami December, aro, tho best month tn trim old trees, and large branches, because npplutrco wood cut nt that timo is slow to rot. Trees will remain sound a great many years, when the branches are taken off in theso' months. -This caution, whoro an orchard has been properly managed, is unnecessary, because there arc no largo branches to bo taken off. The prevalent practice, in this section of pasturing orchards with hogs, is another drawback to healthy tree, a3 they are sure to bark the roots, and they dio and rot, and the (ifet strong wind will prostrate the trees. , W Coilins, Erie Co.,. Y. ;"- IIof Expander far IIr. Horses that", aro hoof bound may bo easily cured in a short time. First let the smith pare down tho heel of tho hoof, till it is as flat and natural as a- colt's; then take equal parts of pine pitch and fresh butter, simmered together, and anoint the heel only. Tho hoof of any horse may bo grown out in thrso months?, by applying faithfully this simple remedy. To Kcatte Snrtllliiff lu Cattle. Take half a gallon of proof spirits ; warm it over , tho fire, and diszolvoin it a pint of soft soap. When cool, bottle it, and add one ounce of camphor. Apply this frequently to tho affected parts, and tho diseaso will bo pertectly cured. TO IICLIKVC LiiOKCD UATTLC Mix a spoonful of gun powder with enough ol hog s lard to form a ball the size ol a hen's egg. open the animal's 'mouth, and after pulling out tho tougno lightly, chuck the ball of laid and powder into tho throat, let tho tongue go, and tho work is done. I have tried this in two instances, and it produced alruoit immediate relief. Foul in the Foot. Wash and cleause the foot with warm soupSuds, and then tako equal parts of spirits of turpentine and soft soap, and simmer them together a little, and npply quito warm. Two or three applications, at most, have always cured with me. Un lor. Farmer. flSTMecting a negro on the road, a traveler said "You havo lost some of your frieads, I petceive. "Yes, mnssa."
