THE EZ2X0VAL OF GOVEHJIOR REEDER. It can bo scircelr doabted tltrtt President Viorce hai Ion sinco yield ed to the demand of tbo slavery prop n!.ndits. and Droraised to remove Gov. llVeder srlienuTer his removal . should bo n auirti by them. It was owiiijj to this arrangement, no doubt, Uiftt we hre heard from the West that a memorial hits been addressed, by the Miisouri Legislature of Kansas, wtha 'resident, asltia for tne remo Alof Q)v. Reeder, an J almost sinml taaHuat?. from the K.tst, that his successor has been, appointed. Frtjsi dent Pierce, we suppose, wished to avoid, if possible, the odium of endorsing tha infamous outrages perpotrated by the border ruflljns of Missouri; he has. therefore, removed nun before the memorial of this bogas Legiil.tturtJ reached Washington. Hid that got into his hands, investigation would have been necessary, and it iniht have turned out. at List, that Governor Reeder bad onl 7 dona bis duly. It was certainly fur easisr and safer, aince tha act had lonj been resolved upon, to strike him down unheard, and place some creature in his office who would help the pro-nlarcry partv to accomplish their objects. Gov, Daw. ion, we presume, has been selected with ciecial reference to the work, ha has to oerform, and, in tha lan puageof the drunken out-laws who Ea?H overrun Kansas, ho will no doubt pove himself "all riht on the goose question." We shall b? toJJ, of course,' that Gov. Reeder has been removed for tio Jalinr the law by speeulatiu in th Hair Dreed lauds. This ha denies, and aks to have a specification of the rulca which ha is laid to have viola ted. But grtntio? that ha has been guilty of wbut b I harjed; why has tha President not removed the Judges of tho Territory, aad had those Olli corsof the army punished, r ho are charged -with having committed the anie offence? No one need boat a loss fr an answer; there was no haughty slave oligarchy to demand their removal and punishment. We published, at least two months ago, an extract from a Washington letter to a Charleston j)urnal, which stated that Goy. Herder's removal had been determined upon in thu Cabinet, tha diy before tha tetter was written. It was not lon after, that' Jeff. Davis, in a iturop speech, assured th people of Mississippi that Gor. Reeder would soon be removed. Still later, and i'ust aa Gor Reeder was startin? to Kansas, to resume his odcial labors, be received a letter, written by direction of tha President, informing him that he would bo removed unless he satisfactorily explained tome of Lis proceedings. All these facts show that his removal hasbntn resolved upon, and that tha Administration was only waiting for something which theyeo'd adopt aa a pretext. Rut its rnanuMiv erinhas proved unsuccessful, and It now ntauds before tho country as the acknjw lodged supporter and 'defender of all the monstrous outrages of of tha Hissouri mob. This is well understood to be the case la this West. -A friend, while on a recent visit, to St. Louis, was informed by a" prominent citixtn of that place, that Gov. Reeder wulJhav been hunj on Ms return to AT , if Pr$iJtnt Iierc9 hud not promised ths JTusourlans that h ' It removed Of course, wo canuo vouch for tli truth of the statement, though wa can vouch for tha repeciabilily of the gentleiOn who matia it. Hut whether it be true or false, the people of . Missouri cvi dently beliaved the President was on their side, and he had just taken tho trouble to provo their 'belief correct, and by removing .an. officer who stood in tneir way, and appointing one wlio is .. very probably intrucU'd to aid tha Misssouri invalr to fasten alavtry upon Kansas. Cin, Oasetts. ' .-, v Tha Removal of Got. Header . The Administration are determined that Governot Reeder shall not receive any of the honors or ' advantages of . martyrdom, and thsreforehis removal is alleged to luve been made on ' account of his land speculations", and not as a concession to Gen. Stringfellow and his Missouri bullies. Hut, in thu attempting to degrade Governor Reader and deprive him of hi a honors a a martyr, tha Administration deprive themselves of all thVcredit and tclal whis his removal would gain them at tha South if it had been made on po litical grounds. The , President Las made a double mistake in alleging any reason forfthe removaljof the Governor. He should have left the act to be intterpreted according to tho wishes of bis partisans; at tha South It' would have been hailed as a magnanimou sacrifice to the exactions of a slavebolding interest, while his friends at the North might, have attributed it to a item senso of honor, which rebuked an official for an improper speculation in tha public lands. As the case now stands, though tha South is the favor ed party, and the new Governor will bo most acceptable to them, yet thoy are voder no necessity ot acknowledging tha act as done especially out of regard to their wishes, whilo the North will distrust the alleged motive for the removal. If Governor Rheder had rendered himself accep table to General Stringfellow, und remaioed uuiet under tha invasion of tha Missounan, we do not believe ha would hava been removed, if his peculations bad been twice as ex tensive as they were. V. Y. Daily Times. ( The Deed Conscmmted. ' Oof. Heeder has at length been re moved. Picfident Pierce ha com muted several very foolish acts, but in this he has almost.' surpassed..! him self, uov. jieeüer is turne d out be cause he has simply attempted to per ' fotm his dnty. Deeming it. but fair that those who have made Kansa their home shonld make the laws and regulations ander which they have to live,' he has insisted that the I erntoyy ought not to bt governed by a hand ol' ruCians who hava - never made it their residence and who havo no right to be there. He has simply altcmp ted to faithfully carry out the idet of Biuattr Sovereignty enunciated by Gen. Cn and ihe other magnates thu Democratic party. Ho innocent It supposed that so long as he adhered to the prineipU promulgated by that party, he would be lustnined ' by the isdividaal who was placed at tho Bead cf tlio nation by their rotca.
But he was mistaken in President
Pierce. That functionary is the tool of Atchison and Sirinsfellow, and has been from the first. lie sides with the Missouri ruffians, and is opposed to the doctrine of Squatter Sovereignty, at Toast so far as it may be made available in making Kansas a Free State, lie has no sympathy with Freedom. When a candidate tor his present office he told us he knew no North, and there are few U this day who arc not satined of tho fact. He known no section of country exceptjthe South no interest save tho slave interest. It was doubtless well understood between Pierco and Atchison that Kansas should bo made a Slave Stste when the bill erecting tho Territory was passed. Gov. Reeder was selected to aid in the infamous purpose; but lailiui' to carry out the ideas of the appointing power, he is beheaded. He has been removed, not because he had engaged in speculations not ba cause he was unfaithful to his princi pies not because he was in favor ol making Kansas a Freo State, for there is no evidence that ho occupied that a . a position nor yet because he did not faithfully discharge tho duties of his office but simply and solely because ho couiu not bo used by tho negro Uli carcny in carryt.ig out tiuir designs as t ..t s on Kansas, lie has been removed because he teas falhful to his princi- .... . pies, ana to tue principles ot lis party, as avowsd on tho floor of Con gress while the Nebraska Kansas mcasuro was under discusnon in that body It was pretended that ha wiw to be removed l-eciino ho had engaged In certain purchases of land. Of Course this was all ashnm. Certain judicial officers, it was said, would alau be re moved; but there is nothing heard about them. They will be allowed to keep their places nt leant so long as they are faithful to Slavery. Lot then remain on good terms with Silin; ft. II ..-.I t.T. ! .... I .1 iiiyir miu ma iisaucutiei imu nrj lire late. liut n better time is coming. Liven Franklin lVrce may yet live to know "there is North." Ihe sltvedrivers cannot always rulo this country. Kansas will come into thu Union as a Free State, or it will never come In at all. V. 1", Tn'n. Tho Removal of Got. Reeder. There is not a single commentary upon the removal of Gov. Heeder, of Kansas, reflecting upon tho President for his removal, that does not furnish s a lis factory grounds to sustain the National Executive. He had made himne'f particularly obnoxious to the peopte of the Territory, I J having tho confidence of neither one party or the other. He was charged with c-iuii. land "peculations, in violation of the law. Ho denies that he violated any law, but does not deny tho speculations. 2 J Tho fact Is, ha had b ecomu so ohooxioU:!, and by his course had so exasperated tho people, that it was deemed advisable to supersede him by the appointment of another, rather than to permit him to cause nny fur ther difficulty through the exercise of official power. We think it incumbent upon tho President to withdraw ' a any nppointraent wueio It lias rcorne a fruitful and fearful cause of conten tion among tho. people. Hut Governor Reeder, without conciliating the good will or seeming the contider.ee of any, stirred up n very considerable excitement, and rendered himself pirtioularly ohnoxious to n majority of thu eititt'iis of Kansas. It was found lhat hu could uchievu no good that tha aspviielies which had been created by some of his arbitrary moves would not subaide under hi udnmiia(ration, and that tho passions excited wouid not cool down. Undt rail the circumstance, wo think, his removal was justifiable, and, it is to be hoped, will bo followed by happy consequences. 3 Of course, it will not bo greeted with approbation by lluso who hoped, in tho Kutuus ditlicuKies, to luako political capita), and. consequently, are opposed to ans thing that will tend to allay them. Hon. John L. Daivson. of Pennsylvania, has been appointed lteedcr'e successor a firstrata man, who, as hu voted for the N'ebnuka-Kansus Bill, will, sea the laws properly administered, and will tro as far as Reeder, or any one else, to resist any encroachments on the rights of the people of thu Territory. Ho is a firm, consistent politician, and u gentleman of high character. We look for a great deal of good to come out of his appointment,. Cm. njuir1 You mean the pooplc of Missouri. Tho rcai citizens of Kansas love him. 2 Why was ho not tried before he was condemned?; 3 Tho happiest consequences will follow.. American freemen Are aroused, as never be fur c, and they will never rest until siavery or free dom is tho acknowledged principle of this government. It is useless to talk of compromises ary longer. Brookyille Colleze. J. J. Gardner Junior editor of tho Liberty Herald thus nctices the ßrook villa College. ' Sima ono has been to kind ns to send us a catalogue of the above nam ed college, now in the fourth yar of its existence; from which wo nre happy to ara that thu Institution is in a most tlouiUhinir condition It is'yet in its infancy, but bds fair to become one of the leading Intuutions of ouifStatc.in laci. we know of no Institution that we could more freely enrnmend to the patronage of yonn Indies nd crentlemen, who are desirtiuH. t olitainiir n thorough education, i one that would successfully compete with it in intel lectual aud social advantages.
