- as Horn about the Cut Worm. We believe it entirely possible to gather such facts ia referecco to the habit and ravages of this pest, as to nearly or quite guard against it. This may not be done ia one year nor in two but it can It done, if those who barf the opportunity, will only furnish us all the facts. We haTe already alluded to the field of the Messrs. McClure. It U bottom land as in clover last yearpastured close cattle and hogs were fattened on it last winter broken up Terr early this spring where the cattle and bogs were fed most, the ravages of the worm were least not bad any place. xexiel Blight's field is good upland cloTer field pastured close cattle and hogs fed on it last winter where fed, the worms were worst. Time of plowing and planting not reported. Joseph Miles of Springfield town ship, good upland 15 acres of clover pastured very close last fall fed stock on it during the winter where fed most, the worms did but little dam ago the other part suffered gre atly plowed and planted about the last week b Aprjl. John M. Barbour, on his farm in WhiteWater, had a field planted on tod entirely destroyedparticulars not received. Francis Barbour, in Springfield, . planted a field in corn that had been part of two fields, one in timothy, the other in clover plowed and plan ted about the 20th of April the part that had been in timothy was tntirtly dtttrcytd the clover nearly escaped. There is certainly such uniformity in the habits of thin worm that due labor and observation will detect the means of preventing their ravages. We propose now that all farmers who have any experience on this subject furnish us within the next month, their observation on the following points. What kind of sod ? How long had it been in grass ? When did you plow? When plant ? Pastured close last fall or not ? Feed stock on it in the winter or not ? In addition to answer to the questions give any other information that you may deem important. Add also the experiment of other years and, if convenient, of other places. Give, if you feci like it your opinion as to cause and cure. In this appeal to the reading and thinking farmers of this valley, we hope to interest all persons that would promote the cause of agriculture. AV1XG GI1ASS MEED. Many farmers neglect to save their own grass seed at a timo when thoy aremostbusy with their rrsin and hay, but if farmers gen erally mako it a point to save seed for their own use, they would find their account in it, both in prime cost and in not being imposed upon by buying foul seed from another men's farm, who had no interest in keeping your land free from weeds. Orchard gToss is among tho first to ripen, and will bo ready to cut from the 20th of Juno to tho 1st of July, according to location and coiL This should bo reaped or cradled aud immediately put in compact shocks, to stand two weeks, the stubblo may bo mowed and hayed, taking caro not to disturb tho shocks, When dry4 tho shocks should bo moved very care fully to tho bam for btorage, as -tho seed shells out so easily. Kentucky Bluo Grass comes in serson for harvest about tho samo time as Orchard grass. Tho best method of gathering tho seed of this grass, is by stripping tho heads by hand; the process is miner slow. but no other way will bring tho seed in good condition, as it is too light and chaflV to bo thresh ed and winnowed. At tho prico for which it sells in market even 11 1 i mis BI0T7 way pays weu Meadow Fescue (English IMuo Grass) ia rioein July, and having a tolerabh heavy seeu, can bo cut by tho sickle or cradled, and, when dry, threshed and winnow ed, carefully separate tho chaff. Foul Meadow Grass ripens its coed in the latter part of July. We consider this as the bc3t grass tfcat can bo raised for meadow ettzüj ted carsh land. It is fine, nutritious, and yields a great bur d:a: and liko a good naturcd wife, will bear a great deal of neglect Trithcut spoiling. When in head, this cross very much resembles rei, tcp, and is often mistaken for it. Tha seed is very fine and sells at a hi-h price as much by the burhd as clover seed, tho' much LtVew Timothy Seed ripens in July sdas it Is contained in strong fccad, is very easily harvested and cot cut, either by rcapinir. crad licj, or with such a machine as W agoner'a clover harvester, sim t.y tTJun-T elf tho heads. nillLMAMT WHITEWASH Many have heard of thobrilliant stucco whitewash on tho cast end of tho President's house at Washington. Tho following for makiug it, is as gleaned from the iYtff. lntrlligettcrr9xih some additional improvements learned by experiments. Take a half bushel of nico unsln diced lime, slack it with boiliDg water, cover it during tho process to keep in tho steam. Strain the liquid through a fine sieve or srtaincr, and add to it a peck of clean salt, previously well dissolved in warm water; threo pounds of ground rico boiled to a thin paste, and stirred in, whilo boiling hot; half a pound of powdered Spanish whiting, and a pound of clean glue, which has been previously dissolved by soaking it well, and then hanging it over a slow fire, in a small kettlo within a hrgo ono filled with water. Add fivo gallons of hot water to tho mixture, stir it well, and let it stand a few days covered from tho dirt. It should bo put on right hot; for this purposo it can bo kept in a kettlo on a portable furnace. It is said that about ono pint of this mixturo will cover ajsquaro yard on tho outsido of a house, if properly applied. Brushes moro or less small may bo used according to tho neatness of tho job required. It answers as oil paint for wood, brick or stone, and is choaper. It retains its brilliancy for many years. Thero is nothing of the kind that will comparo with it, cither for insido or outsido walls. Coloring matter may bo put in andniado of any shadoyou like. Spanish-brown stirred in will make red pink, moro or less deep according to tho quantity. A delicate tingo of this is very pretty for insido walls. Finely pulverised common clay, well mixed with Spanish-brown before it is stirred into the mixture, makes a lilac color. .Lamp-black and Spanishbrown mixed together mako a reddish stone color. Yellow-ochro stirred in makes yellow wash, but chromo goes larthcr, and makes a color generally esteemed prettier.
In all theso cases tho darkness of the shades of courso is determined by tho qnantity of coloring used. It is difficult to mako a rulo bo causo taste are different; it would bo best to try experiments on a shingle, and lot it dry. We have been told that green must not be mixed with lime. The lime destroys tho color, and tho color has an effect on tho whitewash, which makes it crack and peel. When walls havo been badly smoked and you wish to havo them a clean white, it is well to squeczo indigo plentifully through a bag into the water you use, beforo it is stirred in tho wholo mixturo. If a larger quantity than Ovo gallons is want ed, tho samo proportion should be observed. dotirstio TiisrouTrvEx. Two littlo girls, 0110 rejoicing in blue ribbon, tho other in pink, wero bewailing their domestic mis fortunes in mock-maternal langungo. "Where- is your dolly 1 asked ink ribbon ot her littlo neighbor. "Dear me, did'nt I tell you?" answered blue; "why, shc,s got tho measles dreadful. Her l'uco is spotted all over." 'Well, I don't think bho's ns sick as my doll," said pink, only hink, I havo had n constitution of thirty doctors for her, and they all didn't do her any good. I've had to buy her n new gown, sho s so miserable; not tho misery a new gown has brightened up sho ms got consumption. , '(), that's dreadful badl docs sho cough much?" asked tho oth or with an uir of great solicitude. 4 All tho timo and keeps mo awako so much of nights. "Hut why don't you tako her out? Tho air will bo good for her lunirs. dear! exclaimed pink rib bons, with admirably assumed in tensity of feeling, "my dolly hasn t got abit oflnngs, sho only breathes through hernoso. This was tho climax; who could help laughing. What Hope did. It atole on lta pinion of snow to the bed of disease, and tu uQerera frown brcame a smile, the emblem of peace, and endurance. It has too, a circulation of aome 03,000, while we have less that 1300, snd must set up our reading matter, expreisly for this psper. The Western Christian Advocate, which Is not ao large aa ours, with a circulation of 28 000, seriously contemplated raking the price or reducing the size of Its eheet, and yet Ita price ia one dMlar end half. - We cannot live at less than the prices below, without resorting to meaaures that .we acorn.
