THE flMBRiGp. Hoa. William Cumback. Th. speech of Mr. Morse, in tie
fence of the Southern race (in the National K. N. Convention last Tues day) was a firm one, and that of Mr. Cumback was yery effective. He stood op boldly for the position of the nortn. Mr. (J. is a youn man (but 26 years old,) formerly & Demaerat, and is elected to the next Con gress from Indiana on the Anti-Nebraska issue. He has been prominent and very effective here in cencentrating a true northern feeling, and stands , full upon the Massachusetts platform , as do all his colleagues." Correspondence oj the Tribune June 12. Mr Cumback is entitled to the thanks of at least one of his old friends for his nanliness. Perhaps he will pardon a reminiscence. In the winter of 1848 9, a Boardin Club was organized in the University, for the purpose of economizing expenses, and, like all others grave bodies, had a competent and efficient staff of officers. Ed m csd Mcxqcr was President, Ardivan W. Rodgers Chaplain, J. M. M. Wilson Treasurer, Robert S. Voorbees Secretary, the Iter. Jeremiah Lewis, Cook, and William Cumback, Steward. Mr. C'a office of buying and carrying the bread and fixings for forty boarders was no sinecure, and accordingly his board was given free of cost In addition, he rang thu College bell, and od terms such as these re- ' ccived all the education he was enabled to acquire. In College he was nniversrlly known as one of the hardest student', and decidedly the most free-loving, free hearted boy in attendance. For the same reason that has decided the course of m&nj an other brilliant, he left college, and devoted himself to the business of teaching in the South. Some time since, he returned with the feelings and sentiments a true hearted man may be expected to acquire; then was elected to congress from his district last fall, and makes his appearance before the nation as a prominent defender of the Right and the True. ' We can well imagine how Will Ccmboack talked in the K. N. Convention we have heard him before; and if he lives we predict for the boy that was the other day carying bread from CiCTx'g and beef from Morklib a brilliant future. Oxford Citizen. Xros Tbotnpeoea Lectors to Yoang Man, A Temptation to Dishonesty. Young men are often betrayed into acts of dishonesty, by the desire to et themselves tip prematurely in business. This desire may be dictated by the best motives; such as the wish to assist a dependent mother, or to contract an honorable marriage; though it is seldom that a mind acting under such pure and generous impulses stoops to anything base, even to secure its most darling object. But a young man finds that it is no easy matter to become established in business, under the pressure of comKtition and of rent in a great city. s must wait a long while beforo a favorable opening may occur, and perhaps J.) may never b able essen tially to change his condition. It that this was not understood by pur at U east one half of our young men. .a. w before thev had relinouished the nros pect of a decent though moderate livelihood in their native placo. Bat to an ambitious young man, whose way seems to be hedged up with difficulties, a temptation will sometime present itself in the form of a promising speculation. "If I had the means," ho says to himself, "if 1 only had the means, I see how I co'd double almostnny amount of money, and make myself independent." But he has not the means, and he knows not whereto procure them. Suppose all this, and that your Mayor, who has heretofore stood to firmly forth as a champion in favor of law and order, with his heart ngonized at the fearful state of things bro't about by the running at large of both domestio and imported dogs, should hasten to issue his proclamation to his army of police I) arm themselves against the domestic dogs; but at their peril Inot to touch in imported dog, that inasmuch as there were some 8,000 to 10,000 imported dogs, the importers of which had paid duty thereon, and in consequence protected by tho United States laws, they must be protected by tho State laws, muzzled or not muzzled, bite whom they would, make mad whom they would, destroy whom they, would. Yours truly, EDWARD C. DELE VAN. We take tho following from tho N. A, Ledger: "Ono of the Churches at Bedford in Lawrenco county, was compelled last week, on account of the county Commissioners not appointing 'agents' to keep the county groceries, to pospone its communion meeting, as they ware unabie to procure the elitnents of a sacrament. The Temperance Law, it would therefore appear, interferes with "whito cravata" as well as corduroys." The Crop. The Indiana Journal of the Oth inst. says: "As an indication of what those experienced in the wheat trade think of the crop, we may mention that we heard a large flour dealer offer to execute a bond with security, to deliver by November next, five thousand barrels of flour at five dollars and a half a barrel provided the other party would give good security for the payment.'
