That Caaing. We stated in our former article on th -abject that Ur. Q. hiX been caned in th street of Üüeitf for hing.' tAi to Mr. Allis, be nerer kept a retail llauor house at which the mfia allud ed to, could get liquor, and if he ever tjot rut at the bouse of Mew. Allis ck uawii), no uia u wiiuous uieir Know ledge, and in riolatioa to their express orders, and without pay. lie. wa bird drinker, and his employers tried their best to reform hiin. As an eyi denca of this they gare him a horse and drj on cociaittoa thAt he would quit liquor drinking, and Mr. Howes one of the firm offered tu pty hii initiation fee and his dues if he would join the Son j of Temperance. He was thus tndaeedto become a sober nan, and tenahed to fortwo years. lie afterwards became a drunkard and died ia the poor-home, and though largely indebted , to his old employers, Mr. AUis went to his furncral and found him tn a poor-house box, for a coffin had him taken from it and placed in a genteel eoGn. at Li own expensemade hl"i widow a present of barrel of&otirgtura her some money, and Mr. Howes was equally liberal too. AH these facts were as easy of access as was the fact of the man' death In the poor-house, and if the reverend dirine had been ia search of truth instead of scandal he would have given the tacts instead of falsehood, and saved himself the hamtlition of a caning forlrinff. 4 f we dislike to become the apologist of any man, more especially of one who has universally opposed us and oar politics; but Mr. Alls is absent frost the city, and we deem it but jus tice to make this statement! Mr. A. is now Vice President of the Er ans Tille Straight Lino Riilroad, and one j of oar most substantial business men, and here where both are known, . his uorals and his honour are esteemed j far above the Rev. Thomas A. Goodwin's. His allusion to our regaling ourselves with AUis' private brandy, may go for what it is worth. If Mr. 6. ever knew that Mr. A. kept private brandy he knew more than we do. The whole story was a malicious fabricatioa on the part of Mr. Goodwin, for which he richly deserved the caslifatioo which he got. Will the editor are the gocdness to publish this? Evantville JZnaurUr. . - , Certainly i John with the utmost pleasure. We always did love to talk and write about that event. It may seem strange to you, bat it is even so, we are glad to hare it , brought to light once more ia the growing city of the Poeket. It ie one of thoe events thtt will bear examination. We only feared for your sake. -, The last we had heard from Allis beg pardon, Mr. Allis, Esq., Vice . President of the Straight Lim liairoad,-h9 was swearing at every body that questioned him about iL Even his fabricated account of his assault, failed to do him honor, and failed still more to shield his murderous business, from the just indignation of the people. It was with no unkind feeding to Mr. Allis, Individually, that we narrated the circumstance that wounded his pride. We r were speaking of the taxes the trade caused honest men to pay, and said that we had recently seen a wholesale liquor seller riding to to the Poor House, in a splendid car riage, to see one of his employees buried at the, expense of the county. Allis's money had so long shielded him from the indignation of the people, that he became greatly enraged that so mean a trick should , be ', exposed, and hence he assaulted us in the street with a cane.' Poor fellow t he was so enervated from soma cause, most like ly, from a sense of his guilt, that, though he had unrestrained liberty to pound away until he was tired, he did no damage, except to our Sunday hat, which he dinged and knocked into the gwtterjaud we always thought he ought to hare sent ui a no hat for that damaged one. We will, howor er, wait now, till the road is done, when he may chalk our hat, for a free ride; for we want to rislt Evansville, about that time. Pat, yoa bavo been slightly toiinformed, John, about the event. You must hare been misinformed, for ono to truthful ai you are, would not pub llah a false statement knowingly. In the 'first place it was not for lying, that he eaoed us UNvas for telling the truth. That what we said.'was true, Mr. Allis, tacitly admitted, fir.t by be cocirg iaceasod, and secondly, by nerer daring to contradict, in a public manner, the account of it which wr published in oih of tho KtVdVvUIc papers, lie knew better than to do this, for the facts could then hare been prorvd by hundreds of witnesses. In skad of dying in the Poor House, the man died ia a poor borel ia what was then known as "Texas" an addition to Evane'rille, and the mournful pro cession passed up the street by - the Exchange Hotel" to Main Street up Hain' ose aquare thence ly the city gravtyard, to the poor-house I he heart-stricken Allis attending In his splendid carriage. For further particulars you ean inquire of Mr. John Hensjn, the undertaker, who conveyed the box and corpse in his hearse. These things were not done in a corner, friend John, ' The procession passed the entire length of the city, it open, day-light, and Mr. Allis never denied publicly a single thing we erer said of him. Ho never dared to... We Ifarned subsequently that when the widow, who , Was a sister to Col. Gorman, then in Congress from the Vineennee district, now Governor of Minnesota, refuted to bo satisfied while her husband lay in tho Poor House burytq ground, and when1 an unmii take able public indignation was arising, Mr. Allis did hare htm roored to the city barring ground.- Hut he never refunded to the county the expense o
the burial. That is charged there yet,
or rather has been paid by the people of the county. We thank you, John, foryour argu meat in bcbalf of our prohibitory lnw It i as the constant 'recurrence of just such events as you record, that drove temperance men to prohibition. They discovered that no reformation was to bo relied upon while liquor sellers might deal out death, to the reformed man. - The poor man may have- stolen the liquor that killed him, as you al lege, but we venture to irucss that none of tho employees of Messrs. Allis k Howes will steal liquor from them after thu 12th of June. Not u bit of it. They will find a way to prevent it, be assured. We never chnrge'd those . gtnilemtn with killing people "by the small." Jfot they. They would have scorned to do SO email a business. Theirs ... .... t . was a wholesale estaoiuDmeni, nna their slain could be c untcd by the thousand. But their occupation is gone, or soon will be. Let them live in their glory, and revel in . the wealth they have gathered from thej poor' drunkards of Southern Indiana, but there is a day of reckoning. Will you do yourself and your rea ders the justice to copy the above, with such comments as the case demands? We really love to talk and write about it. It is so much like talking over the incidents of the battle after a glorious victory. And for onr part we would not like to be a soldier in a well fought battle who had not seen and felt something striking nnd eventful. Popular Sovereignty. The Missouri Argus of tho 1st in-st. publishes the proceedings of a mass meeting hi Id at Weston, at which a scries of resolutions of a somewhat singular character were passed. In the first place they say self defence re quired the expulsion from their State of every person who by acts ur words brings reproach upon Negro slavery, and then goes on to state that robbers and traitors hare no right to any protccton from law, and neither have in cendiary individuals who would dis turbed their institutions. The resolutions ratify the proceed ings at Parkcrville, and approve of the resolution in regard to Methodist preachers, and ndds them to all preach ers who Bpeak against slavery. They profess to have no arguments against abolition papers but the Missouri river, the bonfire, and the hemp rope. The meeting pledged itself to go to Kansas and help to expel those thie ves who attempt corrupting tho slaves. A grand mass meeting was called which was to take place at Parkerrille, on tho 5th inst.
