The Know NotMag Platform. W need hard! define our position on Know NothingUm, to thoto who hare been tho constant readers of the American, for tho last sixteen months, but as we hare recent. reccired large

accessions to our list, we may reite j rate our views, for their sake. As we first understood the object of the American or Know Nothing moremcnt we confess that we were friendly to if , nor are our riews on the question, in the least changed. We believe the time bus come wlxn Americans should rcbuVo those who hare pandered to foreigners, and who have courted particularly the votes of Catholics. Moreover vre believe this rebuke ttill be ad mi nU t tri J. But in this, as in other

thing, there is danger of tho innocent's

suffering, and of carrying tho matter too .far. Foreigners, themselves, are comparitively klittlo to LUme in the matter complained of. The real fof-

fenders are the demagogues of both

parties who have from time to time

appealed to them for their vote. It is

not to bo wondered at that they should

grow insolvent and proscriptivo under

such i course as has been pursued to wards them. -

But we propose to examine briefly a

code that is put forth by the assumed

Organ of the Know Nothings at Wash ington. We know not by what au thority it spcats, or who gare it au

thority. If it speaks for the body we

do not know it. If the principles as

sumed are merely set forth fetten, we are willing to give our opinion for and against, at wo like or dislike them.

But no man or set of men shall ever

make us endorse such a platform in to

to. These principles aa put forth by

tho American Organ at Washington,

are

First. We shall advocate a repeal

of tha laws of naturalisation, or if

that cannot bo accomplished, then

such a modification of those laws, as

will prevent future immigrants from

becoming citizens, short ol a residence

of tweotvono rears, after taking the

oath of allegiance to the United

States, and of abjuration of all other

powcts, potentate, anu princess. jTa Vt 6 fit rnnciplo we object cn

tirely. We see no reason why the cit izens of other countries may not be

como citizens of this. Neither do we ce any immediate necessity of prolonging the term of probation to twenty-one years. We hare yet to discover that nny longer period than five years is absolutely necessary. But wc are in favor of a strict construction,

and a strict application of this law.

We are most certainly opposed to al

lowing the un-natnlalizcd to vote, as

in Indiana, and wc shall not cease to urge this objection, until that odious action of our constitution is striken

out, and the former one, or its eciuira

lent, inserted in its steal. But never

can wo oppose tho naturalization of

foreigners. Thatthcy may by their clannishnes occasionally be the cause of mischief, we admit, but there is a

remedy eUc where than in a repeal of . 1 ! ..! '

naturalization uws, or in requiring a

probation of twenty-one years. Sscoxd. Wo shall advocato tho pas

laso of a stringent lw by Congress

to prevent the immigration hither of

foaignon, who are citner paupers or

criminals, and to send back to the countries from which they come, all

such foreigners of these classes as may

in violation of such law, hercuftcr

reach our ports; and to require the President 01 the United States to de

mand from any government, which mar send hither such clastes of its

subiccti, immediate and ample satis

faction for such outrage, and a proper

indemnity ngaimt a repetition thereof.

To this proposition wo giro but a

a qualified atücot. So far as enrol

nals aro concerned, we most heartily

cadono the doctrine. But the honest poor, of all lands and nation, ate our

lindrdd, and wo invito them to come

While we have millions of unimpro

red and fertile land, where the poor

est foreigners, with ordinary health

will not only live, but grow rich, we

can novcr consent to send them Lack

to tho crowded lands across the water

It them come. That it may bo ne

cessary to require of tho countries

sending them, and of our national

treasury, somo means to convey them

to the interior, and out of the crow

ded cities, wo admit. But let them

hare a chance to breathe our puro air

and dig in our fertile soil, and they will not only lire, but they will leave

a posterity after them, that will honor

the land of their adoption. Wo are

the more willing nay the more anx

ioua for this, because of the religious

freedom of this country. Most of the

emigrants of Late years are the victims

of religious oppression, and bigotry

We Lave never seen in the vast influx

of Cathouee to this country any dan

gcr, except at they fall into the hands - - ".nt n I

of demagogues, inai ivcmauum, anti-republican we : admit.' It is cs

sentiAlly, constitutionally so. Correct

thi cnti-repnbhcanism, and it is no

longer Romanism. Cut Ilomanlsm, let alone, is not dangerous now, nor can it ever be. Wc say, let alone. By this we mean, that it shall not be proscribed of a lingle privilege that all " ethers enjoy, and thatit shall not claim 1

privileges that all may not have j

And especially, office seekers shall not court tho Catholic vote, as tuck, as did both political parties in 1852.

It is this only, that makes Romanism to be dreaded, and it is to correct this, and this only, that nino tenths of the Know Nothings of the country have united against the old party hacks who havo been willing to sell our Common Schools and even our biblo to obtain their votes. Observation has shown us that but few of tho descendants of Catholics aio Catholics after the second generation. Hence as wc lovo protestantism, and desiro the conversion of Romanists, we Are not only willing but anxious that they should come to enjoy our free institutions, and bo educated in our free schools,

with our free protcstant children.

hen, though onco fettered by popish

superstition, they shall sco the truth,

and tho truth shall make them free.

But whilo we thus open the doors

of our country to even tho poorest of

the old country, and while, at as early

a period as prudence will allow, wc

would admit them to tho privileges of cititens, wo would keep a watchful eye on the demagogues who would array

thcni naiust the native-born citizens.

anj claim for tliem particular favor becauso they aro foreigners.
