mich is th 7Miky Party. Dims the Ute exciting political campaign tho Democratic Darty was charNitl bcin- tho Whisky party of the State. We Ulief it is concodcil that the democrats haye tho majority lathe Indiana Senate. This body eTe lia to tte faIs0 cJiarS0 on yesterday, by passing the Tempersco bill m reported from the Committee on that subject, without a single amendment. It is said to bo a strong law. W e Lope, should it pass the House, that it will hare the effect to put a stop to the etils of intcmperanco-Än., From this it would appear that the Democratic party intend to claim .the Prohibitory Law as theirs. We infer the same from a remark in the communication from our correspondent "Vmdex," who does not, it appears, personally endorso tho law. Bat bo thinks the Democratic party jrill sweep the state, ia consequence of this law, by at least 20000, two years hence. All history haying shown that the opponents of prohibitory laws get beat worse and worse every year, we infer that tie Democracy- intend to tako time by the fore-lock, and adopt ,this law is tfce'us. Success to tho Democracy, and many thanks for giving us 0 good a law. Missisota. Governor Gorman has got into singular difficulties ia Minnesota. Although he is a Democrat, and the majority of the Legislature is Democratic, yet the latter; is bitterly opposed kto him. When the annual session commenced tho Gor. refused to deliver his messago becanso the orgiaic law made the choice of publio printer obligatory as the Cist business after the organization, and the choice of Legislature was understood to be in
favor of a paper opposed to him. However, he subsequently reconsidered his position and sent in his message, whereupon the Legislature refused to- receive it, as they are expecting a new Governor to supcrscdo Gorman. The message has been printed in all tho caneres. though it had not been ofScially received by tho Legislature. 7"Tbe British press speaks semicontemptuously of the proposed American mediation vin regard to the European war. Cin. Columbian. Turning the Tablet. The Springfield. (Mass.) Jltpublicon reports: About the timo of the late State election, and while partv spirit ran high, an energetic Know frothing canvasser had, in a fiery speech, delivered in Millville, in Worcester county, worked the foreign population up to a point of indignation past all indurance. The day following, as a crowd of Irishmen were collected in tho street, brooding over their fancied Injuries, a gentleman named Holden, noted for eccentrcity, advanced among them, and to their great delight, commenced a violent denudation of tho new party. Beneath his magic influence, tho alien audience became, in their own estimation, the pillars of our republic, and as he warmed in his sudject, Know Nothicgbm withered to a bare same under his scorching touch, while cheer after cheer burst from the excited throng now rapidly incrasing. 'Who,' asked he, "build our railroads?" 'Irishmen' 'js-as the cnthusiastio reply. "Who build our state prisons and our alms houses? "Irishmen;" thudered a hundred voices. "Who ntLthem?" EE INDIANA AMERICAN.
The alarm that was caused by the hard times, which was; resulting in causing many papers to suspend entirely, and sell out, and which caused many old and established papers to reduco their dimensions, deterred us from making the enlargement wo had contemplated, at tho beginning ol tho volumn. ' Though thwarted, for the time beinjj, we still kept out1 purpose in view, and 'now present the patrons and borroxoers of tho America, The Largest Paper in Indiana. And, If it is not tho best paper, it shall not bo for want of unceasing application to its interests, on the part of its editor. t When we took charge of the American, some sixteen months ago, it was not without many a fear that we would not bo ablo to retain its large subscription list. But this hs constantly increased, notwithstanding the discouraging circumianccs of the past year, and we now have a circulation that justifies tho expenditure we have made in enlarging. In addition to tho embarrassment which rrew out of
our want of experience as an editor, wo
many personal friends. They thought it impossible for us to succeed, unless wo should consent to become the' Ornn of somo party.. Hut having long ago settled in our mind that parties will become corrupt, aud that they are usually kept in existence for the bencfiit of a few aspirants, we determined to pursuo our chosen course, and fail, if fail wo must, in attempting to publish a paper that should be truly independent. The readers of tho American know full well, that we do not mean by being independent, that we will not tako sides for or against the question at issue. It his not been hard to toll on which sido of any question wo have been, nor shall If be in future. We mean to say, that no caucus or convention, no wigwam or council, or tribe, shall dictate what wo may say or may not say. We know everybody knows, that a paper that sells iticlf to party, must leave unreproved the political blunders or dishonesties of its party, and distort and misrep
resent the acts of its opponents. Wo
ana snau continue to try in future. How far we have succocdcd , we leave with our candid, couitaat readers. How far we shall succeed in future, must be judged by the future. On the questions now at Issue, wo need not define our position. It Is not sn equivocal one, is our readers well know. On tho questions to arise, wo shall Peak when they come up; without fear, favor or affection, and without asking any master how we may speak. Hence the American may justly be denominated, All IBB POIITICAL ' FAFEB.
