I urn aware.however, that Bin; farmer will not cotiai'Jer it a very appropriate season of tho year to talk about raisin potatoes, now, just as the current crop of rcniHrk.-tbly "imall potatoes" lias been secured, and winter setting in; but my theory is, that winter being the least busy part of tha jcar for the farmer, nnd withal tha season just preceding tho spring, . Looking for tho c:usc, ho discovered that ()o posts which he had been in verted from the way they grew were solid, and those which nnd been ret as they grew were rottd oil". In? spring and summer ; to determine bringing his inventing of the m-m

what kiud of a crop shall be grown on

each field, so that when tho season of active operation arrives, no time need be wasted in considering what is to be done, but all be prepared to move on harmoniously and successfully. All will have noticed tho nmcrublo fail uro of the potatoe crop throughout this, as well as sound other States. Thousands will have to do without potatoes this winter, or puy exorbitant prices for them, while the same labor which they have applied to

their potato crop, would, had it been Info has sent to the Patent Oirico for

properly expended, have secured an ! tho public L'ood, onu hundred bushels

ufacture of printing paper from b:ns wood to perfection. The Register states that he has produced some remarkably lino specimens, made by hand, and hn sent a ton of the pulp to a mill at Littlo falls. One of tho Albany dailies is soon to bo published on baswood paper. Mr. 1J. is confident he can make still better paper from Spruce, Cedar and some other wood. Ohio Fanner.

I s'MH I SSSWWSj S IIIVUVn( eVCTsj, A important point to get them plant arly.' and I think early varieties

abundance and to spare of that delic-

ious and wholcsomo vegetable. It is to the end that such a failure need not again occur, even though the season mar be as dry as has been the past, that I thus early propose to give the readers of tho Cultivator n few suggestions on the subject, also that ample time may bo Lad to make tho necessary arrangements, which, by the way, are few, and by no means d 1 f 11 -eult to make. I have this year raised a crop of as sound, good potatoes, n ever seed be act before the most fit. tidious epicure. They are now worth here 07 cents per bushel, (what pays better?) and aro spoken of by all who come to our tabic, as being tho best they have seen this season. Vet it was so dry here that our corn all dried up, and not a half a crop was rcali ted. The clan I have adopted is not original witli myself, but has been published in various agricultural journals. However, it requires precept upon precept, and evidence piled upon evidence, to induce peoplo to adopt any thiag new, plain and simple though it be. My plan is as follows : Select a rood mellow piece of land, rich

enough to bear good corn; eitherstubble or award will do, and plow it thoroughly six or ebbt inches uco as soon as it is dry and lufQciently warm for potatoes to vegetate. Harrow and mark off lightly with a shovel plow, one way, about 21 or 3 feet apart. Select sound and good sized potatoes for Seed; if you can get them, and drop in rows about 18 inches apart, and

COTcr liKhtlr, about 2 inches, sat. It

is an

do better than late. The Blue Mes n&nnock I consider equal to any ex tact. .

The next operation is, to cover tho

wholj turfaco of the ground with old straw or partially rotted manure, to the depth of five or six inches, if the materials used are wet, or to the depth of 10 or 12 inches, if dry straw is used, as the latter will settle considerably when it becomes moistened by the rain. ' As the soil and weather are cool at this season, I find it advantageous to delay the application of tho straw until toe potatoes have sprouted and

grown nearly to. the surface. They, thus come forward earlier than if covered immediately on planting them. If the work thus far has been properly done, nothing more is necessary until the potatoes (new ones) are large enough to ''dig and cat." The advantages of this method arc, first, it effectually secures the crop against drouth; secondly, the crop needs no attention in the busy part of the senson, as no weeds will germinate or grow whero the ground is o covered. Thirdly, lastly, and moht gloriously, it secures an abundant crop, whether the season be wet or dry, hot or cold. Should tho weather bo very wet, the poUtoes should be dug as soon as ripe, and placed in a dry, cool situation, otherwise they might rot, as the straw is a ere at retainer of moisture.

I think good mellow land, just

cleared, would do well to riant with

out any plowing, but merely drop the seed upon the suifacc, nnd cover with

the straw, in which caso it would not

bo much trouble to dig tho potatoes and, by tho way, it is not when plant s e at

tl in oM ground, as they grow very

near the surface. Try it, brother farmers; cat good po

tatoes next year, and repeat the result.
