At this season of the year the larva begirt, to leave the npple, and finda tome ecure place under the loose bark of the tree, or near it, and cover itself with a white net, and becomes a pupa In a few dnys after the moth appear and is soon prepared to provide for another progeny. In this way it keeps multiplyin; itself until fall, although in nnmbers lest than the firs, brood. We have today (July 17,) examined the body of a large apple tree, and found under the loose bark, cocoons which the moth had to appearance just led. Others we found in tho chrys alis sUU whilo some wero in the ct of making their web; others just closed, and we found lome larra apparently selecting a pi tee la which to undergo .their transformation. The larra when about to leare the apple, vary in length from three-eighths to three-quarters of an inch, with a black orbrown head and a fcw.colored rings arouna me Doar. iney are ouick 1 . In one instance, a person with us in the examination, was bitten in the finsrer br one of them. In Mr. Dowinff'a "Fruit and Fruit Trees," prtgo 67, it is said that "if an old cloth is placed in the crotch of the tree about the time fruit begins to drop, the arple worm will make it a resting place, and thousands may be caught a and killed from timo to time." Wiaps of hay, straw or weeds placed among the branches, or wound around tho body of the tree, may be equally ben chcial. Air. D owing- also says, "we can not too much insist on the efficacy of small bonfires lighted in the evening by which myriads of this and all other moths may be destroyed. It is an object, for all that can, to fence off their orchards, and premit hogs to have freo access to eat the fallen apples. We wish again to sound the alarm to all frnit growers, and all interested that present inditions are, that from one to three years more, and our en tire apple crop is destroyed, unless something is speedily done to avcrte tho calamity. Let tho best means now known boused; let cxperimctns be made, and the result of them pub lished for the benefit of others; let old and yountf all begin in earnest to to rout the enemy and tho work of destruction is sure. Mich. Farmer. "Is the first Uilk FoUononj." Ma. Editor: In the 77th number of the Country Gentleman, you copy an article from the 'Maine Farmer,' showing the first milk of the cow to bo poiaonout to swino at least. But they are sot the only animals capable uf being injuriously affected by the injudicious use of the first secretions from the udder of tho cow. One of tho worst cases of cholic simulating inflammation of the bowels, that it has fallen to my lot to prescribe for, occurred in an Insuman, whicn was caused by a copious draught of the first milkicz of tho cow. Tho first secretions from the udder contain cob$trutn. the properties of which are not vet fullr known: but it id supposed to bo a cathartic, provided bynatuieaud well adapted to the wants of the offspring, removing tlio viscid contents of the intestinal canal. Diarrhoen, convulsions and death, have been produced in young children oj tne too copious ana long continued secretion of colostrum in the mammal accretions of their mothers. Colostrum is not a secretion peculiar to cows, neither is it poisonous to swino alone. O. C. Gibbf, .M. D., retry, Ohio. un tbis auDtect, v ra. uaroutt, an old experienced f irmer of Monroo co., communicates the following to the "Wool Grower:" All rich food, when taken in too large quantities, produces injurious ef fects, xet a iiunrrr ox eat too manv raw potatoe, and they will kill him; let a horse have too many oats, or too much cold water when he is warm and thirsty, and it will founder him. Give la awilB aaa anew can cow apailtul or rich milkfeed slop.and itwill probably kill her.and it will have tho same effect on a sow just pijjged, too much raw whey will kill a pi, so will dry buckwheat when toa much of it is eaten. But that is not evidence that all those nutritious and valuable foods are poison, it only ' provet the want of knowledge.or lack 01 pruaence in tne leeiler. Give a cow after calving, half a pailful of her first milk and it will be very beneficial to her, by loosening her bowels and promoting her cleaning. Cow's first milk is rich and very loosening, and such food is injurious to sows heavy with piir. i(! a subject of deep interest to apairians, in all climates; and variu methods are necessary, according to the latitudes in which they are Ttept, the de. gree of cold to which they are subject, and the prevalence of deep snows, fec. In all localities where tbu snow seldom i emains on the ground but at few days, sar.touth of tho latitude ol the city of New York, populous iamilice require no especial winter protec tion, and a eurremoi cooi air pumi under them, by havinir a front and a rear rassaeo-way, will cause them to. remain in their hives, unless it bo very mild weather. If the hives be well haded, to that the rays of the lun cannot fall upon the entrances, or pas . a as sage ways, but few bce will tally out . .a, as . wnen ine grounu u covcrcu wun enow, and pcruh, as is tu case, wnen n means are UKen to prevent bucq a re suit. In other location! farther north. where the weather is very severe, and Jcen snows frcaucntlv cover the trround . . V. tor months, a different method of man agement is necettury. We have adopted several wayi of winterinjr beet tinder auch circumttan .. and the best one. In our opinion, is to let hives remain in their summer position and protect them by an outer hive. The outer hive is made to alip over thatia which tho bees are, to be let down on the same level as the hive proper, with a passage-way in front, to correspond with that of the inner hive. The hay, or straw covering is arranged as follows: The hives are first pla ced on low stools; say, from six to 12 inches hich. if they do not test on such stools permanently, and without changing their position, except by pla-en-lcinnr them nearer the trround than where ther rrerioaslr stood. Stakes . D . ire then driren into the ground around them, two on each tide of each hire, largo enough to support the hay, and long enough to reach about four inches above the hires when driren into the round. The hav is then staffed round the hives on all udee trmir. ...a a and when complete, cover the tops of the hives with nay, then take strong twine and tie the tops of th stakes to aj gether, in order to hold the hay fast, then remove the hay from tho passage ways, so that the Dees can pass out and in, and then pUce a board in front of each hive to darken the passage ways, and your work is done. An inch auzer hole, however, should be bored through the center of each stand, as the passage-ways are liaDio to oecome stopped up with the dead bees, during the winter, and cause suflbcation, (f no such holes are made. Bees managed in this way, will consume but lit tlo food, will not suffer from the most intense cold, and will como out in the spring in a very heal thy condition. -A ort htm Farmtr.
