Mr. Ira ßtout hat promised us something on the culture of trees. Will not Jadgtj McCarty do the same? fot the Valley Farmer. Faxt Good wis: -I haro long been of the opinion that each county newspaper should contain not less than two columns weekly for tho special benefit of the fanner. Doubtless a xaajority of tho readers of the American are engaged directly or indirectly In tilling the soil ; and to such, your announcement to devoto a portion of your paper, weekly, under the head of "The Valley Farmer' must meet with general approbation. It U rarely indeed that farmers meet and compare notes, without some one feeling more or less benefitted by the conference Such being tho fact, argues strongly in faror of an occasional correspondence with each other upon the various subjects connected Jwiih .their calling. To plow, sow, or plant, and gather tho product, is a plain matter indeed, but how to do it in the bebt manner, and at the most appropriate time, requires both slill and experience. Many portions of our county tare heretofore rewarded tho husbandman bountifully for the labor bestowed, but such however, cannot always continue to be the case, unless a more judicious system of farming is practiced for time to come, than bas been in by gone days. That farmer who' has not observed the great contrast in the manner in which his neighbors conduct their farm operations, must have been an idle spectator Indeed; but even should that have escaped his notice, the fact of one gradually increasing in wealth, while another perhaps barely meets his annual demands, is of sufficient importance to create the inquiry, why is it 80? I presume none are better calculated to solve that question than the more prosperous of the two, and upon in quiry itjwill generally b found that tie great secret lies tn conducting all (arm operations by some regular sys tem, previously'matured. and skilfully carried out. It ia an evident fact that the ele ments of fertility aas fast disappearing from a great majority of the farms of our country, and hence, tho great ne ees-aty of farmers' counciling with each other upon the various subjects . connected with their calling, and there by improve'upon the present mode of extracting from the earth Ihosoele menta calculated to feed our crops. without giving in return something as an equivolent, either in the form of manure, rest to our land, or such other modes of procedure as may be calculated to secure the desired end. The time allotted for writing this communication has expired, and consequently I must stop just here. J. P. B. Fruit in Cellars. An exchange says: A great deal of winter fruit suffers eajly decay, in consequence of a deficiency of ventilation, especially during autumn, and after the fruit Is deposited. Another cause of decay is the improper location of the shelves or bins, which are placed against or around the walls. By this inconvenient arrangement, the assorting of decayed specimens must be done all from one side, and the shelves must hence bo very narrow, or the operator must stretch himself in a most irksome horisontal position. The circulation of the air is, at the same time, greatly impeded by the want of space next the walls. To avoid this evil, the shelves should be in the centre, with a passage all around. This allows circulation of air; and the shelves may be twice the width, with ths same conveniences in assorting or picking. If suspended from the joists above, or stiff bars, rats cannot reach them. It is said tha( the Germans are Terr successful in the ventilation of their cellars, by a communication with the principal chimney, the heated air in which necessarily maintains a current, which sweeps out the noxious and stagnant gases from the vegetable and other contents. Stajloo Cows. To prevent cows from lying in their manure when in the stable, says a correspondent of the Albany Cultivator, have a gutter drop ' immediately behind the cows, 6 inches deep and 16 inches wide. If cows are fastened with yokes, they need about 4 ft. 9 in. to stand upon. By having the stalls long enough, you have a walk back of the drop, which is convenient for walking on, setting pails, &e.
The "He Plus Ultra" Wheat. For several souona pitht, much interest has ht en excited in this niiglior hood, in the result of experiments maJe by Mr. lfhrra.linc, its Needingworth, near St. Ivc, Huntingdonshire,
in the growth of a new description of wheat, and which, i f i a j;ivth forth Its increase"at tho rate of multiplication that has attended it hitherto, bids fair to create a revolution m the agricultural orld. One ear of it was sown in 1843. on the land of Mr. liarradine, and the produce of this again in 10 50 and 1051, when it yielded at the extrordinary rate (especially for thone years) of 19 comb, I bushel, and 1 peck per acre, (77$ bushels.) It has becn sown on almost every available description of soil, and introduced in every imaginable change of crops. It was sown after Tartarian oats, clover, seeds, pee, and tan s, on soil of various compoBitions, fen and highland ; in all cases the quantity of seed was restricted to four pecks per acre ; but tho result was the same, tho yield reaching that previously re alscdbrMr. Harradine. It has been sown after wheat, clover, barle v, beans, oats and other fallow, and sustained its reputation through these- trials; it has been sown In winter and in spring, drill, broadcast, and dibbled, with the same result,"some put in in February showing no diminution in tho yield. The preparation of the land may bo tho same for ordinary wheat, and the same rate of increase in tho yield over ordinary sorts may be expected. I Tue above is from the Uumbndgo (En?.) Chronicle, and if reliable, is certainly worth tho attention of our 0 t t 14a.. Ml '.V .A I . larmcrs, proviuea u win vmtmana mo severities of our winters, which is not generally tho case with the best varie ties of tnclish wheat. Mr. Harra dine has resolved to throw open the benefits of his discovery to Ins brother agriculturist, find i. wo learn, prepar ed to supply orders for small quantities, for seed. Will not some of our en terprisins farmers civo it a trial? CVrespondent Sat. i'. W. The Oregon Pea. 1 1 A friend at Tainted Post, New York wb1i1js1 nei 4i vmnlfA trtrtiiirij In l-rrrnrd to the Oregon Fca. A correspondent of the American Cotton Planter, sup plies the required information tn part, and presume it will bo entirely satis factory to our friend. 'The Oregon pea, that magnificent humbug, has had its sway in South Carolina. Its career, however, was short. 0n$ dollar a pint will never be civen again in this State for this prolifio little pea. It has qualities to recommend it, but the samo can with equal propriety be said of tho common Southern Pea." Stock of all kinds, horses, cattle, hogs, and cows, will eat the pods and vines of the Oregon pea, but they will do the same thing with the other also. Horses brought from Kentucky, or any Northern State, do not willingly cat either, but a little coaxing soon creates a voracious appetite from them. But they never will abandon tho common pea lor the Oregon pea. Ours is an equal productive pea, much more easily gathered, and properly prepared is as delicate an article of diet as any pea, let it come from a distance doubly as far as the savago H-ilds of Orezon. I must admit, however, that there is one pref erence to be yielded to the Oregon pea, and that is, that it crows more luxuri antly on poor ground than any other vegetable matter. To say that it flourishes lest on poor land is all hum bug; but it may be- said that in proportion it bears more abundantly on such land, for, if the land bo rich it grows rapidly to a large weed, too coarse for fodder, and unable to sustain its own weight, decavs its fruits by its own shade, lying flatly on the ground. The pea is tedious to gather and unless taken when moist with dew, or just as soon as it is ripe, it pops open like a touch-me-not wnenhandled and the greater parts of tho seeds are lost. Seventy-five cents a bushel for the 'Georgia Crowder,' or 'Shiney pea, is an nundred fold chevwr than one dollar a pint for the much extolled 'Oregon pea.'" Sowing Clover in the Fall. Clover, says Thaer, may bo sown from the bogining of spring (or even in winter, provided that it do not ger minate) till the becrminfr of August. If it bo sown later and come up before me end ot autumn, it is; commoniy destroyed by the water. Tri nri fnvfr ernrinrrej aro ihnvi which are executed very early in the season, or else among the autumn gräm on even ground not exposed to be flooded, and even while the land is covered with snow, (tho melting of which carries the seed down into the ground) or among largo barley sown very early, for the clover is then benefitted by the humidity of the winter. Receipt tor Making Liquid Oredildoc. Take two quarts of proof whisky, or other proof spirits, warm it over coals, being careful to prevent a blaze. Dissolve in it a pint of soap; when cold, put it in a bottle with one ounce of camphor. It is then ready for use. This is an excellent remedy for sprains and bruises, and should be kept by very owner of horses. -JYp-pocanoe Farmer. Mascri. - Manure is the capital on which farmers do business ; and the man who teaches them how to obtain it at a reasonable rate, and in sufficient quantities, does the publio better service than if he lectured the livelong day on copper and silver mines, and amnsed the sleepy hours with golden dreams. JE5With a downright taste for fruits and flowers, a man may have occupat on vnd amusement foj years in a hundred feet square of good ground. -Downing. STA. French gardener is said to have discovered that bv caintin? his hot house with coal-tar, Oie refuse of the gas-house, all the insects so destructive to plants and fruits are destroyed. E3 Madame Jenny Lind Goidschmidt has been compelled aain to eontradict rumors of domestic infclicitee. She represents her husband to bo "a model of conjugal attachment and affection." She had been compelled to leave her husband and child at Dresden, while she went to Stockholm to attend to important affairs of her family; hence this new scandal.
