, Tor the American. EvAiTiLx,Döc 2Cth., 1854. Mr. EorroR 'I h&d almost conclude J to inflict no more of my letters up on you, believing that, from the number of spicy correspondents you Lave, : ihm space srltich my letter occupy might bo much better filled. Thii morning J have token a notion to writo onco mcT, although 1 do not know what I hall writo about. Perhaps my letter will be as my old friend parson E., used to say of wmo of hi sermons, "like a tln-pcdlar's box." There is no knowing what it may como to before I am done Perhaps It may tars out a song, Perhaps tars eat eorawn.M, To confess the honest truth, Mr. Editor, I have- very little on hand just now in the shape of items, notwithstanding it is my happy lot to lire in the most important part of the great State of Indiana, and in a city which is soon to eclipso all the other cities of Hoosierdom. I might, it is true, giro you a chapter on our prosperity and prospects. I might tell you of our Railroad interests, our coal mining ' operations, of kour prospective salt- . works, ship-building etc., but all these are generally known, and I need not occupy time and pace in treating of them. In the absence of items of interest, I have been tempted to moralits a little. Then it occurred tome, that I would have it all to myself, except what the poor printer would have to do.' j and I should,; be afraid he would bless me (oterthe left) all the time he micht bo doincr the work. So then hero goes for whatever comes up permost. , I see that 'one of your correspon dents chide you greatly for not en couraging the poets. Now Mr. Editor I hare a bio( experience on that subject which was brought painfully to remembrance by that hint, and I am inclined to give you tho benefit of it. 1 was once honored with the task of examining and judging of the merits of certain poetic effusions, by an ob scare child of genius confidence sadly misplaced, it must be confessed. But I had yielded to tho absurd notion that potts are the next" thing to fools, and hence was unwilling to weigh the merits ofathe above mentioned productions, or to give to the author the encouragement .they entitled him to. I should have rcmemcred that MA pMn'i life and doth depend elh till Sot en the poet wti but the tular'i will." and being the first reader I ought to have been willing to aid in sending them forth to tho worll instead of consigning them aat once to oblivion. In those days I rather thought that "Of tho row fool who with all tun are earsi, Surejscrtbbllog fool, called poet fare the wont.' Yes And I was hard-hearted enough to think they fared hard justly too. Well with these feelings I rather discouraged my poet and have perhaps been the means of keeping him from the public gaze, and his productions from taking their j place alongside of those of Byron and Keats, and Talfourd, and Longfellow, with all the rest I did'nt even retain a copy of any one of theni, and my memory on ly retains one stanza of one of the poem's submitted to my inspection. This one was on tho Mexican war, and you will be able to judge of how much is lost to literature whenI give you that one stanza. Here it is, "0 Jimmy Polk, what bare you dona, la eauelngso much blood to run. Of woman, children and mankind, To satisfy yonr wicked mlud." Now sir, taking that as a specimen, what do you think of tho loss to the world in the suppression of all tho poe t had written ? And how must I feel, now that I have fgrown older and learned more, when I remember my agency In the matter. Take warning my dear sir, by my experience, and by all means encourage the poets. Yesterday was Christmas day, and notwithstanding it was a damp, cheerless looking day, it was rendered quite lively by the many happy spirits in our city who seemed determined to enjoy it. The boys especially, seemed bent on keeping a racket, if nothing else. Every little urchin that could raise a dime was armed with fire crackers; and such an incessant cracking as they kept up was enough to give all the town the headache. Many a'person passing the stieets was made to jump by an explosion'about his heel, and horses had to be held with a tight rein, to keep them from running away. But it was no nso .to say a word; Young America," was enjoying one of his inalienable richts. Hurrah for Young Amcica." 1 admire the pir it of the boy who said he would pick hia own nose on the Fourth of July, and that he would pick thunder out of it if he was a mind to. To-day it is raining most delight fully. We hope there will bo enough to raise the Ohio. It has been dis tressingly lowjfor months; and although a., aa - a travellers from aitout this region are independent of it since the comple tion of the railroad) to Tcrro Haute still it sadly interferes with business Our city would assume a much more lively appearance in a few days if the river should rise a few icct. No more at present, but remain . Your's BAKER. . XiTTna Larokst LvmpYkt. The Stockton Argus states that there is at the banking home of Messrs. Adams & Co., in that city, a lump of quartz gold weighing 1CÜ 1-2 pound. Th lucky and equally mysterious finders otfhis great treasure were engaged, at

the time our attention was called to it, in casing it for shipment to New York.

All that we could learn was, that it was taken out about fifteen feet below the surface, in Calaveras county. We should judge that the lump contains at least eighty per cent of pure- gold, which, at jl7 per ounce, amounts to tho inner little- sum of2G.2G2. It was found by a company of five- men, ono of whom states that they have a larger lamp still. They rcfuwMo give names or tho locality from which tho gold was taken. .... ii ruHCTUATios. We have noticed that many of our cotcmporarica, whenever using the word Know-Nothings abbreviated, invariably print UK. Vs. Now, we would ask if the use of tho apostrophe is proper? Aurora Standard.
