Trom tu Matno Farmer. HEAVES CT HORSES. It La often been remarked to m that the disease in horsos called the "bearct" it more prevalent now titan it vu formerly. Yv cannot say , whether it is a fact that there are more horses troubled with this disorder than there used to be, or whether, as there are more horses now in existence, there are consequently more seen troubled in this way, while the comparative number of diseased ones may bo the same. We have never been fully satisfied in regard to the cause of this disease, or tho real state of it. Every one, however, can soon distinguish the symptoms. It conaista in a difficulty of breathing the flanks or respiratory muscles seem to do the whole work, and that, too, very laboriously. The air is drawn into tho lung, when tho muscles at tho flanks begin to draw in as if pushing out tho breath, and after pressing in with a L'ood deal of action, thev diop suddenly, ns if a catch or spring hat id let iro of go of them, and they fell by their own weight. There is also a dry, hacking cough attending the disease, and on driving the horse quick the cough is often ex cited, and this laborious breathing is brought on very severely. This would stem to fix the seat of the disease in the lungt. We have noticed, however, that heavy horses, as they arc called, are generally enormous caters, and if suffered to eat as much at they desire, will fill their stomachs to a most uncomfortable extent, and when thus distended, arc much worso troubled than when spairingly fed. Many causes have been alleged as producing tills prevalence such as feeding moro freely on clover hay than formerly dusty hay, caused by the smother of tho modern horso-powcr threshing-machine, in barns where hay is kept, &c, It would seem, from the fact of an increased (or morbid appetito in tLo horse, that the stornahe has also taken on diseased action. Various remedies have been proposcd, and some of them relieve or palliate tho disease, for a time. We be lieve that caro and attention in feeding is of ereat consequence. Don't let him fillhis stomacho too full with dry food. Let his food bo moist, and of a nature that contains much nourishment in small bulk. You do not find heavy horses troubled much with this complaint while they are at grass. Thea let their food approximate as near to tho condition of grass as you can. Cut the hay, wet it, and pprinklo on meal. A writer in a recent number of tbe Rural New Yorker, J. Libbey, of Eerlo Harbor, N. Y., encakin of this disease, attributes it to feeding on clover hay that has become musty in consequenco of being badly cured. He Kays ho treated a horso that ho own ed, and that had the heaves, in the following manner: Ho took tho hay entirely away from him, and fed him with straw, mill feed, (short, ke., wo suppose,) and grain. He thinks if ho had cut the straw and wet it with oat or corn meal, it would have been bet tcr ; but, as it was, tho heaves did not troublo him much. Those who have good horses that aro troubled with heaves and most heavy hortet are those which are nat urally most strong and active should furnish themselves with a straw-catter and a much-tub, and pive them cut and moistened feed. They' will thus not only keep their horso moro ccono mically, but will improve his health and keep him in a comf-rUblo condi tion for any labor. We would add to this, that in tho opinion of tho best writers, carrots fed to horso onco a day will entirely prevent heaves, whilo they improvo the general health of tho animal by gelatinizing tho food in the stomach and rendering it moro easily and complete Iy digestible. Immigration a Socrcb ot Wealth. The Edinburgh Rcviow, alluding to emigration and its effects, says that no country was ever made worse by an addition of healthy laborers, while, there was work for them to do, and heads to direct them. The Unitei States are emphatically in thi condi tion. The native population is shrewd and intelligent, and ha shown it.icl abundantly capable to direct tho for eign element. Ilial element, in re turn, proves one of the greatest 're sources of the state, furnishing it with the thinf it most needs labor to de vclon it resources, to put down its fix tures, to open its ways for transports tion, to subvert its virgin soil, to un cover tho hidden wealth of its mines to run its spindles, to hammer its iron even to trim tho sails of its ships, and to work tho engines or its steamboat a iuuuht uor.
