I hare lost over one hundred and fifty chicken with the gaps, la tht course of the summer, and hare dissected many examined them thoroughly and found nothing to justify the conclusion that the disease is caused by worms in the wind-pipe, throat or crop, as some writers pretend,

nor hare I found any remedy to cure or prerent the diieaie, in all that I bare read. On the contrary I tried all the remedies published in the Cultivator, and many more, will out any food effect I do not believe that there Ter was cur performed by any remedy I hare tried. But I have observed that they were not affected with the disease in the spring when the weather was cool, nor ia .he fall, but only in hot weather that the most of them took the disease in tho morning, after bting brooded all night. I therefore concluded it was caused by too much brooding ia wirm weather. I procured a headless uarrcl which I set upon a gras plt tevk the chicks from the hen at iortnight old; put thrm ia and fed them, since whiob I have lost no more with the gps. You are welcome to my experience. C.BABCOCK. Guilford, Vt. Any. 24. 1851. Country Gentleman. Tai at Bt raw and haw ta ao It. When all the various products of the farm are abundant, and of low val ue, in consequence of not being easily accessible to a good market, many thing are wasted, or suffered to go to loss, which under other circumstances would be carefully preserved; and a habit of this kind is sometimes formed, which we are slow to abandon, after it becomes our decided interest to do to. It is for this reason doubtless, that in our western country there ia a great waste of materials, which might with a teiT little labor and expense, be converted into wholesome and nu trilious food for cattle, ind nearly all o'-her kind of stock. 1 It is no uncommon thing to see the who! crop of wheat straw, generally amounting to several tons, thrown out on the field or barn-yards in such a manner, aa to be rotted down, or at least, to be rendered unfit for feed of any sort, with the first heavy rain that fallt. We cannot look upon this plan of disposing of good wheat or other atraw, as any other than a very wasteful prodigality, especially on a farm where thre are any considerable number of hones or cattle of any discription to b wintered. When grain is threshed at the barn, and it alwaj should be when any how convenient, all the atraw that can be stored away und-r shelter should be placed there, and tho rest carefully tacked so as effectually to turn the wet. It is then rvady for convenient use daring the winter and spring. Where a farmer has straw sufficiently plenty to allow his stock to waste about naif, and still have enough, he can safely allow them to run to the atack daring the winter but not othei wise. Now, how should this strnw be ucd! In the first place, all stables occupied by hones or cows should bo kept well liltered with it, both for their health and comfort, and in order to retain the rolatile ga.?e. absorb the liquid manure, much of which would otherwise greatest should be cut, and mixed with a small portion of bran, or ground fcrd. meretj enough to season it, .nd slightlr wetiea inorucrio maice tno latter nobore to the atraw. Straw thus propared, may be fed in th'tt way, in troughs made for the purpose, without any waste, and n worth nearly as much as good Hay, and stock wilt eat it as readily. It requires a littlu Ubor.it Is true, hut if we would I'tpt-nd n few dollars, in the purchase of a StrawCutter ef suitable dimontiona to bo propelled by a horse, the labor would be but small, compared to the real rid vanbge which would follow. Besides, the wjrk is to bo 'done at a season of comparative leisure. Our eaatcrn friends ar much in adranee of us in tho matter of turning all their atraw to good account, and though they can afford to be a little more saving in this, as well as other things, we.the west are, without doubt, far too wasteful and slovenly. Caawrisii. A correspondent (E. 8. Hobbs. of Dubois county.) savs he has four or five Acres of cleared land which is inclined to be rather flat, and is worked very much by crawfish; yet it brings a very heavy crop of grass, and would bo excellent meadow land, if it were not for the crawfish piles.or chimneys as they are sometimes called, being in the way of the scythe in mowing. Now, Mr. Editor, is there any way by which the crawfish can be induced to quit working in such meadows or not? If so, please to tell us bow. Under draining is the only means we ean suggest tor the destruction of crawfish. They must bare water.and if by any possibility the water can be drawn oflf $o as to prevent their reach ing it, they will soon die out. In many locations they are a great pest, and we should be pleased to receive from our correspondents their experiedce or tbouhts in reply to the inquiry of Mr. Hobbs. Farmer. Ciovia.
