nlcalüiu Iwo ujoalji , since, I wrtiiyj Tiewi irsely ia iri ,if J t cryp, cW., in I h.ivo tlio .uifa;tiou of knowing that I wnt correct iu almost every particular. Having just returned (rum a wcaUra trip, a few worth from uct'i al observation may not be nm'm nt thU time. The quantity of hoi throughout tho west is 23 per cent creator than last season, Missouri is perhaps the createst sufferer from ;lw failure of the coro crop, ami her stock of ho? will bo fatted principally tipon rrtast, which I Gnd very abundant m nil see tions which I have travelled over, . In th northern pari of Illinois, say from Alton up, corn is abundant and at reasonabTa prices; in the neighborhood and upon the line of the Chicago and Aliiaiseippi Railroad a distance of near two hundred miles, thousands of bushels of corn can be had, and all along the line of this road, many, very many hogs are fattening and I never saw hogs doing better- in the neighborhood of Teru, Peoria, Terre II ate, Layfayelte, hogs are fino nnd abundant." Now taking Kentucky, Ohio, Indiana, Illinois, Missouri and Tennessee, we have an increase of over one and a half millions of Hogs over last season the question now nrises, What isiooe aone wun tne manuiacturea article? Where are wo to find a market? As all of our markets at home and abroad are stocked with old stock, not excepting our own city, as I said in my former communication, England will want noao from us, unless at extremely low rates. California will not be in as she can raiso and manufacture her own supplies; the South has at last learned the React and asks none from ui; this fact proves itself. We have been unable to ;et anything out of our river for 6i:: months past; notwithstanding this, no material advance has taken plico, nnd large stocks are now held in N. Olefins owned by packers on the Mississippi and Illinois rivers; truo a slight advance hasjust taken place which will cause shipments to be made from New York, where immense stocks an held, now with largo or moderate stocks in the South still grunt in the East, and no meager supply in our own city, but largo at this season of tho year, and with the ruling prices at these points with the panic iu our money market no chartered banks in our city where good men can gt accommodations at fair rates, but be compelled to pay from II to 3 per cent per month, and then only npon the best security. I sneak candidly when I say with all these facts staring us in' tne face, -what can wo pay for hoys tho coming season and be safe? Tho farmer has had both reins and whip for the pant three years, and wc have been lashed until we can stand it no longer, and are obliged to cry outl (Süll we can blame no one but ourselves1) These are facts that cannot be disputed, and while lu re in this connection, I cannot but coqdemn tho system of Brokerage in our citsthey are gentlemen, therefore, upon that I have nothing to say; bur I speak of tho system as operating with great force Agnint the packers in many ways. Who is there that is buying that would much prefer buying from the owner of the hogs, or the packer of the meat in person, both being able to ak and answer all questions satisfactory to both parties, and thus prevent the many, very many unpleasant mistakes nn I quibbles that arise through the other channel; this can be done, and on change the place to do it. Now I repeat the question again, What can we pay tho farmer or drover for his hogs? (Not what will wo pay and run the chances for better or tor worse, anticipating i onto great battle where wo expected to feed some largo army, in a horn) butsiroplycome down to matters of fact, what cun we pay for hogs t'üt tenon, and make a reasonable profit? My candid opinion with all facts before mo is that no money can be made at over 3 dollars. Let us think theso matters over candidly and give it duo reflection. In conclusion, I beg h ave to say, I am not interested to the amount of one dollar in provisions, nor djl expect to bea I an not a packer nor n speculator in the at tide. I have frequently made mo of the word tee, but only for the purposo of making my arguments stronger. I have already spun this out longer than I intended, consider me, therefore, n mere looker on, having the interest of the packer at heart. Respectfully,. . MAJOR. THE irOISLaTVItE. The State Sentinel has claimed the Senate ss having two Nebraska major ity. But in its list, it has a Nebraska Senator, McDowell, elected from Hun tington antl Wells; whereas Chapman, Anti, is renlly the Senator elect by a handsome mai'r:.ty. Besides this, th New Albany Ledger, one of tho prominent Nebraska organs, says that Cutshaw of Washington, (an adjoining County.) ono of the hold-over Dcmo'Cratu, openly acted with the Peonle.s party throughout the canvass, and ac cordingly places him in its Legislate table, with the 'l usionUts.". V very willinily accept him and with 0 W those corrections, tho 8cnato standi Anti-Nebraska 25, Nebraska S4. If similiar reports in regard to Shook and Kightley, nru corroberated, it will make it tili better, 23 to 22. er . a .a r in tno House, the rx-nnnci lias an other mist ike, claiming the election o Thompson, of Benton and White Uem Uur letters from lucre assure us oC the election of Thomas, Ami Nebraska, by 4G majority. But there is a errave r blunder in Tippecanoe operating Hirainst our :ido. fliey tl ectcd there two Anti Nebraska Punic sentatives by more th;tn 1 100 majority over the tbraska nominees. But, since the election, it is discovered, to tha surprise of nil, that by the appor tioament law, Tippecanoe is tutitled to this year to but ma Representative All ballots thereforo with two Kepre rcntatives are void so far as that ollice is concerned; nnd upon a recouut appears that dome 33 or 0 persons out of the 4,000'voters in that County voted for one of the Nebraska norm htf.s, scratching Iiis collcnguft on the ticket from pveiudicc fi?:üust him. Those single nhots Lting thp only Uga! yotjs cut for UenrecCJiUiivc. Air Bu:k, the Nebraska candidate who re ccived them, is technically entitled to
his seat. Whether . he will dishonor, himself by a'ceeptieg it; and thusfcrc
limcl(upoi rt ptonle two-third tf wnom voteu against win, ns mcir jiep-reM-ntative; or whether he 'will resign and allow them to elect a man of their choice; remains to be seen. Leaving that county out, the House stands, Anti-Nebraska CO, Nebraska 41, "National Whig" whom the Nebrasksns claim will act with them, on and Dr. Wier, of Sullivan, Whig, bat pledged f his County giving always COO to 800 bcrnocrath. ninjority to, rote for a Democratic U. 8. Senator. ; It is a matter of surprise with winy Jhat with 10,000 to 14.000 majority on the ätaUi ticket, and 9 out of the U Congressmen, the People's majority in the Legislature should bo so small. It is easily explained; snd is caused by the system of floating members adopted by the Democratic Legiilaturo in the apportionment . bill .of 1851, inUn leJ avowedly to give thorn tho majority in the Legislature beyond all coutingency when an U.S. Senator is to bo tlecled. Thus, Madison, Boone, Washington, Posey und Clay, all "reliable" Democratic Counties, hare un extra Representative this year, and have elected ' them on that side; while Rush, Putnam, Montgomery, Vigo and Tippecanoo, have each one less Representative thaa usual at this ejection; and as all of them went right, tho loss of 6 members to ear side, and the gain as above of ß, to the Nebraska, makes the People's majority in tho House just ten less tkan it would have been on a fair apportionment. P. S. $,We are informed by Hon. T. G. Harris, Senator from the Elkhart District, that J. F. Brothwdl, of Noble, the adjoining County to Lis whom the Sentinel claims in its list as Nebraska, was the Anti-Nebraska nominee for Representative, voted the People's State ticket and for Brcnton for Congress, and beat Mr. Denney, the Nebraska nominee against him. This cuts down the Nebraska vote in the House to 40, and elevates Anti-Nebraska to 11.
