A4 the Rnring meeting of the l'reabjtery of Lbeneier, at Flcraingaburg, la 1851, tho following overture wna presented to that body, viz: " What it tht duty of a Church Set lion, in tht cast of a mtmbtr of tht Church under itt charge, who fails, in vehott or in part, to pay hit jutt and tquiiallt proportion of hit Pattor't flary." The abore waa committed to a Special Committco of Kldr, consisting of Henry K. Heeder, Kq., Hon. Jas. M. Preiton, and Judge Lewis Collina, to report at a subsequent meeting. ft. O. GRUNDY, Stattd Clerk. Mysville, Oct, 10th, öl. UCPOUTi Your Committco having had under consideration tho overture, "enquiring what ia tho duty of a Church Scxsion, ia tho caio of a member of tho Church under its charge, who fails in wholf or in part, to pay his just and equitablo proportion of his Paator'a salary," do now make the following report: ' 1st. It is a dictate of natural jus ticethat ministers of the Qotpel should receive arcasonablo compensation for tkeir services, from those to whom they minister in holy things. Men, almost universally, provide food and a safe home for the horse, that carries them on their journey over mountains and plains; for the dog. that guards their dwelling-house and field; lor the ox, that patir-ntly draws their plow or cart; forjthe nervant, who intelligently cultivates thir farm, or serves in llicir household. Men, guided by tho dictates of natural juatico ulone, look upon all this m their certain duty, and act accordingly. 2. In the Church of Ood, under tho Patriarchal dispensation, the right of tha priests of Clod to a coinpvnmiiion for their services, is recognized by Abraham, and illustrated and enforced by his cxumple: 3. When Moses, by divine command and inspiration of tho Holy Uhoat, gave to the Church an organized form, and regular written laws for its government, he, by that command and inspiration, established it as ft fixed principle, that those who perform service in acred things, should be amply supported by those for whore beneht they labored. 6. Our Lord and Saviour, tho Mighty Ood, the Wnless Man, who blessed and enriched the Church by the introduction of the Christian dis pensation. who is exhalted to bo head over all things for this Church, em phatically call preaching the word of Uou, vork; and declared that thoso encased in this work are worthy of their meat. (Mat. x.) And the Holy Spirit, by the hand of Paul, has written toth churches, (that it might be - eternally recorded, and had in everlasting remembrance,) and has used tho following unmistakeable language, that he who runneth may read and understand his duty: (I (Cor. ix.J 6ih. Paul, when he w.is in Corinth, received contributions towards his support, from the churches ho had planted to Macedonia, he and they illustrating, by their own acts, and in their own persons, the true teaching of the Scriptures Vn this highly im portant subject. Thus the dictates of natural justice; the example of Patriarchs; tho awful command and judgment of the tremendous Ood, given through Moses and Malichi; the iure declaration of Jesus our Lord and Saviour, who is full of grace and truth; the heavenly teachings of the Holy Ghost, as written by the inspired l'aul; the example of Paul himself, and the churches planted by him; the practice of the people of God throughout all a ire a of the Church, when most devoted and spiritually-roind-'d, ail all, blend in harmony to demonstrate beyond cavil, that ministers of the Gospel nave a firm, divine right, to a sumcient support, whilit laboring in word and doctrine; and that a corresponding duty, alike firm and divine, to provide such upport, rests unalleviatcd weight upon those who enjoy their ministry; and on each member of any particular church, to contribute his just proportion of this support according to his ability. Therefore, if the advantages derived from providing a proper support for the pastors of churches be 0 numerous and so great, a neglect of this duty must prove the fruitful soil, from which will spring corresponding evils equally great and numerous. And so w conclude that the right of the ministry of reconciliation, to a reasonable and sufficient support from Uiomj to whom they proclaim the lerms of this reconciliation, ia baaed on the firm foundation of God's word; and, that the duty of each member of the church to whom they make, this proclamation, to contribute to this support according to his ability, rests on the same foundation; and when any such member fails to contribute, he jeopardizes the eternal interests of himself and family; he obstructs the happiness and use fullness of his pastor; he. retards the progress of the church; he refuses obedience to the command 01 uod, and
rebels against the authority of his Haviour. Therefore, Jleiolved, That every church mem
ber I under a Christian and moral obliiratiun to contribute his ittst rrotortion towards tho support of his pastor, according to his ability. That this is not it gracious gill frcm him to his pastor, but Is it debt, which he justly and religiously owes to Jesus Christ and his cnuso ; and to be paid to his minister for holy servi ces rendered. That Church Sessions ought to see to it, that each member according to his ability contribute to this support. That if any member prove delinquent in this matter it is their duty to instruct, advise, exhort, ai.d ana reprove him, with nil patience and long suffering. That if ho continue to turn a deaf car to all they say, he will become a fit subject for more public- censure; ana finally, for suspension from the privileges connected with the sacraments of tho Church. . All which is respectfully reported by your Committee. lT?o W llMtftlTrtM 1IEN11V It. UKEDEll, LKW1S COLLINS. "Latiko to ii tu Foo." A letter from New York says: There is one fact that must bo ac knowledged, that the Cunard lino has been generally the alvr ol the two. Upon good authority that ofa gentleman in the habit of crossing the Atlantic four or five times during tho year I have it that thu English steamers frequently lay to, and generally run moro slowly in these fogs. In one case, says my informant, when ono of the uunardcrs was laying win a uensc fog, the passengers, in a meeting held for that purpose, voted to request tho captain to prococd, andjwith his accustomed rapidity, offering to take the "ruk" upon themselves.
