Norri, of New-Marlaf, in the Northern part of Alabama, and withia few milea of the Tenessee lino, where the thermometer sometimes sinks to zero, and nr? in rises so as to render fire uncomfv. ;ul!e, has been for many years past very success, fill in keeping the sweet potato. He expresses the opinion, in the Farmer's Companion, that sweet jotatt:s may be kept as well at the ouh as at the South. He does not usually lose a peck in 400 bushels. His method is in substance as follows: Provide a good open hcd; on a dry, well-drained piece of ground, nround which a good trench is cuL As soon as the autumnal frosts have killed the leaves carefully dig the potatoes. handling them as if es, and piles of them under the shed, each vile containing sav 10 or '20 bushels. J OsP A The separate piles aro for the sakeof .removing a portion as Wanted, during warm weather in winter, without dis turbing the rest Immediately cover each pile thickly with good xeheat straw (not hay,) as light injures them, and the straw with a foot of earth. Tho The shed keeps the whole dry. This is tha whole process. It is found much "better than packing in barrels with sand, which retains the moisture and rots them. The moisture is absorbed by the straw. They should never be bruised. The most successful keeper of the common potato whose practice we ever knew, always covered his large heaps (70 or 80 bushels) with straw packed a foot thick, which absorbed tho unnecessary moisture, so that he rarely .lost a peck in one of these large heaps. .Only three or four inches of earth was needed outside the straw; and if he had covered the whole with a shed, doubtless tho roots would have been still more secure from any danger. Country Gentleman. " ADVANTAGES OT DRILL CTJLTTJBJS. Wo cannot too strongly urgo upon Our brother farmers the 'propriety of putting in their wheat wih the drill. The advantages of drilling wheat have been so often held np to view, that a repetition of them might seem unnecessary, yet we can hardly forbear to . name & few of the moat important. And first with regard to fK ivingof iced. . It is fully conccd.J ii:ü wheat put in with the drill need V.ut auwn . so thick by perhaps one peck r t acre, as that ' sown broadcast, wheat is now 91 25 per bush, and to many farmers good clean seed wheat will be worth much more. Here, then, is it .saving of 31 cents per bushel, or enough to pay for a drill in the amount required to sow less than 200 acres. Where several farmers who live near ac! other join in purchasing a drill, aw is frequently the case, it would in a rery few years pay for itself in the saving of seed alone. Uut this is only one of its advantages. It is th most effectual means yet discovered forpreventing the wintcx kill, to which -the crop on n large proportion of our western Luids is very liable. How does it do ft? First. The drill leaves the ground in small . furrows,, beneath the centre of which . the seed if planted. During the freexinj and thawing of winter, the tine
dirt it continually f illing into these
from tho ridges on cither side, andcovering the roots of the young plants a they are elevated by the lifting process or the Irost. nit It I Secondly. 1 bo secu being burieu at a uniform depth ,nnd in very com pact rows, tho plants on coming up, form a kind of tuft which greatly pro tects the roots from tho piercing winds, whereas, in hand-aown wheat, the plants being isolated, form little protection for each other, and are much more easily drawn out of the ground by the frost, than if in compact rows or bunches, for it is evident the roots of a single plant will bo much more earily broken or loosened than those of it large number all united together. Hut if our reasoning were false, tlie evidence in the case, is indisputable. Drilling docs, in a great measure, pierent the winter-kill. Conversing, ft short time since, with an inicilieni i armer, arm aucccaami wheat grower, on the advantages of the wheat drill, he pointed to a field in which lie did not think there would have been three bushels to the acre, the past harvest, had it not been sown with tho drill. From tho appearance of the stubble, wo should think it has voided a crood average crop. Of an other field of ten acres, he said he was nöt positive but the drill has paid for itself on this field alone the past reason. Having used a drill from their first introduction into our county, his judgment is certainly entitled to respect. Many others, with like experience, speak of the drill in similar terms, and, in fact, we have yet to hear of a single farmer who-" discards its so after having giving it a fair trial. As wc have iucidentalh hinted, several farmers of one neighborhood may unite and purchase a drill, sow all their wheat with it, and then hire it out to their neighbors. In this way almost any farmer may have one to do all his seeding. An outlay of some 10 or 8 15 eaeh. is all that is required. Of a course every one who sows two acres of wheat should have one himself if he is able to do so. It. TIME TO PB?A FOR SPEI50. P Do not let the fall pass without hav in? something done to facilitate the sprinsr work. Farmers should recol lect that the fall and the latter part of tho summer Reason is an excclltnt time for destroying weeds, briars and other lenoo corner snruoDery rcciuyingoiu and resetting new strings of fence, setting gate posts, and hanging gates and many other things that the time would fail us to mention. All the necessary work that miht be done in the fall, that is too often left as being spring work, only tends to binder tho farmer from his crop that mutt bt ten' aea u tn ume, or no is going uac. K.
