Thi bodr convened on the 24th of May. and adopted a platform certainly novel for that party, in this wr-e of the world. They have embodied in their ' platform the following whithj plank, which boldly proclaim them the enemies of prohibition. It reads ' thus: Resolved, That intemperance is a great moral and social evil, for the rsstraint aad correction of which legislative interposition is necessary and proper; but that we cannot -approve ' of any plan for the eradication or corrti of thia evil, that must neces-
arily result in the infliction of greater ones; and that we are therefore opposed to any law upon this subject that will authorize the searching for or seiiure, confiscation and destruction of private property." Thea they think legislation may legitimately throw some mild restraints around the liquor traffic, but must not presume to enact any law that ould prove destructive to so darling an item Of private property 1 This is a mere quibble, flimsy as it is contemptible, and designed to betray the real friends of the cause. But we rejoice to see that they are meeting a just rebuke from the best and wisest men iu the State. . What are those alarming evils, which must result from the passage of
a law similar to that in Maine and several other Slates? They have carried the law into successful operation, and bar universal testimony as to its good effects, but have realixed none of those monstrous evils which seem to exist in the distempered imagination of our - democratic friends. The only serious evil they intimate, is, that a little "prirate property' a few barrels of rum may be destroyed. This is of iniin tely more importance, in their estimation, than all the tears and blood,
wretchedness and woo which nceswretchedness ana woe wuicu u-w sarily follow from its sale. Now, wh priTatejproprty does'the Maine La propose' to confiscate? Nothing b ow, what .aw l,,l cronose 10 conuscaic i'wiuu u. smuggled Uquor.lcept for sale contrary to the law of tho land. Hereafter, in Indiana, counterfeiters may rest secure in the possession of their implements for counterfeiting, should this magnanimous body gain the ascendency, as these are as much "private nronertv" as rum. and they have pledged themselves that no such possessions shall be confiscated. TK nfmieiof Tcmperuncü have wisely abandoned the old thread-bare hobbr that a prohibitory law is un constitutional, since that has been set tled by the decision of the highest ju dicial tribunal inouriana. now, nowver. ther raiso a new cry, equally hallowand eontcmDtible. The secret ia. tha damoeratia Dartv of Indiana are avowedly the free whisky party, and as such let all true friends of the cause rrrrA and trat them. "CoiDO out v - " - from among them, and be ye separated from them." Tho cause of Clod and of humani .y demands that you abandon old party lines, which exist only in name, and join issues upon this great moral question of free whisky or Prohibition. THE P00Ä LSUlfXAXD. 'Oh! I have sometimes looked at a bright, beautiful boy, and my flesh
has crept within me at the thought, that there was h bare possibility he might become a drunkard. I once was playing with a beautiful boy in tho city of Norwich, Connecticut; I was carrying him to and fro on my back, both of us enjoying ourselves exceedingly; for I loved him and I think he loved me. During our play, I said to him, 'Harry will you go down with to the side of that stone wall?' Oh yes,' was his cheerful reply. We went together and saw a man lying listlessly there, quite drunk, his face upturned to the bright blue skv; the sunbeams that warmed and cheered and illumined us, lay upon his porous greasy face; the pure morning wind kissed his parched hps and passed away poisoned, the very swine in the fields looked more nobl than he, for they were fulfilling the purposes of their being. As I looked upon the poor degraded and then looked upon that child, with his bright brow, his beautiful blue eyes, his rosy cheeks, his pearly teeth, and ruby lips the perfect picture of life, peace and innocence; as I looked upon the man and then upon the child, and felt his little hand convulsively twitching in mine, and saw his little lips grow white, an J-his eye dim gazing upon the poor drunkard; then did I pray to God to jnvc rae an ever astingly increasing capacity to hate with a burning hatred any instrumentality that could make such a thing of a being once as fair at that child. Qough. A Qciet Susday. The first benefi cent effect ot Mayor Conrad's election was seen yesterday. It had been so long sinco the Christian portion of this community had enjoyed a quiet Sunday and they had been so accustomed to hearing tuo music or our babuath bens marrel by the discord ofdrunken brawls, that they deeply appreciated trie noiy luxury of a Lord's day kept according to the admonition of sacred writ. The taverns, which hitherto have had their crowds of reeling reveler, wer closed In the course of an extended perambu lation, we saw but two drunken men, and ihey, doubtless, raised tho ateatn at home. Of course it is to be expected that the invetcrato drinders those to whom rum has bocomo almost as Indispensable) as bread, will secure their fiery liquid on Saturday, for Sunday, and thus gratify their domineering propensity; but the closing of the taverns will, neverthcldas, eil'ect the purpose for which tho measure was intended. It will clear tho street of riotous crowds, and orderly, church going citizens will no longer be horrified by do-nonstrations insulting to that Almigiity to whom the day is dedicate?. Mayor Conrad has earned tho grateful remembrance of his fellow citizens, and a continuance of this policy will insure him even greater marks of popular confidence than ho has yet received. There was considerable swearing among certain people at the universality of the drouth. Dry parties perambula ted the tawn in aearch of the ardent, but, although there were taverns everywhere, there ws "not a drop to drink." Sv. ertl of the ioger beer aaloons up town had crape on the door, to iljtiiry, wo suppose, that tho proprietors were, pecuniarily, dead. In Fourth street, above Noble, a lager brer seller had two kegs placed In front of his house, upon which were jars of water and tumblers, to Indicate tho triumph of cold water.
