matter, te. de. Nw York, June 2Cth, 1854. Probably your readers would be pleased to knowhowr cheap, apparently, you can now travel from Cincinnati to New York. It is not necessary to inform you of tho impositions and in diomüe vou have to undergo" It is O 4 useless to relata the latter as you will find that out soon enough when you try it. The strife between the Hamilton $r Dayton, and the Littlo Miami Roads, has brought fare down very low. You are informed by handbill that it costs only 810 60, from Cincinnati to New York. It is true this is tho rrywar but thev stick on the extras so - j thick and fast that you must notlcaye home without your pocket-book well etuffcJ with what the New 1 orkers call 'Indiana. Wild-Cats, the Wall ttrcet war of sneaking of Indiana Inw depent Democratic Banks. The Presidents of the Kailroads must be in partnership with the Bar bers. boot-blacks, and Dorters. For w instance, tho regular faro from Cin Cine nnati to diYelantl. 255 miles is only 81,60, taken in connection with tho Steamboats cn the Lakes. The fare from Cleveland to Buffalo is 82,60, 100 miles. On this last 190 miles is where we begin to feel for our shillings. Two shillings for carrying your trunk on tho boat two shillings for taking care of it on the boat, to keep it from being stolen a shilling to the boot black- and five shillings for shaving and washing the coal dust from your hair two shillings for taking your trunk to tho Hoteland two for taking yourself, and tho same on each, from Hotel to tho Railroad Depot. Now whatdotheso extras from Cloveland to tho Depot at Buffalo amount to? If your readers know what a shilling is they can tell something of the extras. So soon as you reach Cleveland Shillingn aro in vognc, and every man keeps a toll gate. Again on the Hudson River, after having paid at Cincinnati for your faro on tho boat from Albany to New York, you have to pay on tho steam boat, 60 cents for a poor supper 81,00 for a poor bunk to sleep on, and tho ngro, will steal your boots while you aro asleep, and lock them up until you pay two shillings for blacking. In this way any one can easily decipher, that Instead of costing 810,50 to go to New York, it costs about $2100. Hotel bill aro still higher than last year. At this city only common fare is 82,60 per day. But enough of this m our readers will now bo warned to prepare for extras. We have spent four days in this city mast of tho time on Wall street with its bankers and brokers. Thero is considerable howling among them. In some cases wo suppose theso howls are caused by real misery ono broker gouging another. In other cases it is all feigned. These who have money howl to keep up their appetite toguaw at others. Thero is something strango and contradictory in the money market. Bankers say thero is unusual lack of money, yet everything liko produce, ither of tho farm or the shop, iscnormously high labor is high and In domand. The great difficulty is every thing is above a healthy living price. Money is plenty, tho reports of Bankers to tho contrary notwithstanding. Tho only difficulty is, tho owners and holders aro asking a prico for it, in keeping with everything clso. Five years ago Mr. A. had 810,000 at interest at 6 per cent, and lived comfortably on 8C00 per yeur, the proceeds. II U neighbor C. at that time had a clerkship at 8CU0 per year, and lived just as well. But tho clerkship has now advanced to 81000 which is necessary, in order to pay the high prices for produce. But tho man who liveson tho interest of his money must cither have 10 per cent to livo on it, or he must withdraw it from tho man who u using it, and go into business with it himself. This is a matter cf necessity. Tho consequence is, there is a demand for higher rates of interest, or for tho principal. Money U not carce.but the owners of it aro demanding higher rates, and thoso who aro heavily in debt, nre being crushed by heavy interest. Railroad Bonds that are promptly paying 0 per cent per annum are not, worth their face, because money is worth more than eight per cent. This depreciates Bonds.and those which have twenty years to run, when sold are docked two per cent, per year, for all the timo till they aro due, bringing them down to CO or 70 cents. This is ruinous to any company. Or if bonds aro issued at 10 per cent, tho interest will eat up stock, road and all. But this is not as bad even as somo of our merchants are doing who are badly in debt Mid arc floundering to save their credit. They are paying 2 and 3 per cent a month . This they do in various ways. Sometimes they pay 2 per cent to the owner of the money, and one per cent per month to an endorser. Thoso not versed in the tricks of trade, know but little of the trials of him who trades on borrowed capital. We know some men that would have been happier in a good penitentiary, if out of debt, man tuey nave oeen tne last nine nonths.

This morning we spent two hours beforo brcakf.ist.at two of the markets in this city. Heaven help tho poor! Notwithstanding our high prices everything except fish is twice, as high as ) Indiana yet wc stood for minutes to see poor haggard looking women striving to buy a variety of articles for her family with 12 or 20 cents. They had to trade and manage in various wiys to buy such things as they must have. Sometimes a fish for 5 cents 3 cents worth of potatoes C of bread,

and if they had 20 cents, tho balance was expended in two or threo articles We watched their operations with creator interest than we would tho rich man dealing in millions. Tho Crystal Palace if now in ful blast under tho management of Bar num. It is crowded with visitors. There musi m ro been 6,000 persons thero last night to hear tho great mu 8ician Jullien. who is hero with his Congress of Musicians. Wo arc poor iudee of Music, but we do know a th'.t it was something different from what wc had ever heard before. TLcre must be more music more real harmony of sounds in this collection, than there is all tho Pianos in Laurel so eloquently described by one of your correspondents sonic months since. Wo find thero is growing up in this city a stroug feeling among tho Cath lie Dutch and Irish, and an imaginary or real organization called "Know Nothings" Wo could find no ono - o in tho city that knew any of tho Mem bers of a society of that name or that character nor whero any such socie ty met still tho Irish havo got it into their heads that thero is plenty of Know Nothings, and that it is organ iscd to cut tho throats and take off tho scalps of all tho Catholics in this country. When wc ask any of tho t 9 citixens about tho matter, they folio the examplo of Bill Brown, and 'shake their heads.' Tho temperance question is waxing warmer in this State, aud Gov. Soy. mour is becoming a bye-word. In tho dining room of the Irving House, whero wo aro staying, when you hear the coik of a champaign or beer bottle fly, it is immediately asked if Key mour is about. Money matters aro in as bad n condition as they havo been, at any timo for 0 months. Tho prospects for Railroad bonds aro rather gloomy. In fact the Agent of any Rond thatsellslonds hcrii must now sacrifice so much that it amounts to pretty near stealing from the stockholders. If all would bo patient, and resolutely refuse to sell bonds at tho prexent ruinous prices, it would not bo 3 months till buyers would seek good Railroad Bonds nt rcMonablu prices. There it a much money in tho country as ever, but its owners, liko all other trader, wuh to mako tho best bargains. C. V. C. Oxford Jun M, 1834. Ma. Editor: This is tho last day or "commencement," atot't sixty sheepskins have been delivered to as many young men and women (connected with tho University and Dr. Scott's Seminary) and they are now 'homeward bound,' finished. Both Institutions havo had a prosperous year, and expect to have a largely increased attendance next fall. During tho exercises U day, Jr. .Am. dcrson, President of tho University, very unexpectedly dissolved his connection with this school, rceijnin j hie power Into tho hands of those who bcstovveJit. The hbtory of tho matter, according to the Dr's. own showing, Is brief: heilemanded an increase of salary; tho Trus tees wouldn't grant it. and hence the sudden abdication of tho chair presidential. Dr. Anderson U a "white-haired, thln-sklnnod" Individual, who gets into rago very quickly, and acts very promptly. Hut I expect that he will regret the step ho has now taken no colleiro lu Ohio except Antioch, of which Horace Mann is Prcsiucut) pays better salary. And if Dr. Anderson can't livo on fourteen hundred dollars a year in this village, what will bcr.omu of him! Tho Board immediately elected V. fl. McGulTcy L. L. I)., to lilt the vacant chair, but It la not probable that he will accept as it is understood that he gets a $3000 Halary in tho University of Virginia. Mr. McGufley Is very exten sively and favorably known as tho au thor of a sequel of reiliii books; and should ho conclude to como here, would doubtloas auitaln tho preont reputation of the college. Dr. Anderson has done good servico to Miami Univcrelty, and verv many persofii regret his departure. IIo lias, in fivo years, Increased tho number of studo nts from twenty-two to nearly threo hundred. TU adJreeec to tho societies were by Hon. Mr. Williams of Pittsburgh, ltcv. Dr. Orton of New York, Judge Iloadlcy of Cincinnati and Dr. Thomas of Han over lud. I heard tho speoch of Mr. Williams, and thought it very good. Nothing that I havo heard, however, has pleased me more than a sermon by Itev. II. U. Hibben or Fairfield, at theM. K. Church, ou last Hslbath morning. His text was, "Righteousness exslteth i natioii but aln is a reproach to any people," and tho sermon was certainly a very powerful one. Tho some gentleman preached again at night; but I was so much annoyed to think that a man of such oratorical gifts, would be content to reaJa discourse, that I hardly listen ed to him. Yours, Lc, JOHN SMITH. P. S. What has Rev. T. M. Eddy done that he should be talked of for Congress! In these villainous times I believe the purest man is no longer safe. O TtTfljKTMce! O Moses: t
