"The following aensiblo remarks were made (says the 'Missouri Caade,') t rIaIn gentleman at n tPufj!cradco meeting in an adjoining State. A young man Lad lately died In the neighborhood from intemperance. The ipoascr being called on arose and commenced his discourso somewhat in this way. "My Friend: You no doubt wilt bo surprised when I stato that you hare mach more regard for your heep than your offspring that you would
rather save your mutton than tho touli
of your children; and yet I think that
I can convince you that what I say is
nothing but the plain truth. Suppono
that a wolf wer to visit your fold
night after night, each tlmo destroying
one or more sheep-what course wml d
you adopt? Would ) ou remain quiet,
and permit him to continue his deprc
dations unmolested? Oh, no; you
would rai?o tho wholo neighborhood,
and with dogs and guns -pursuo tho
destroyer of your flocks until you had
either killed or driven him from your neighborhood. Wolf, wolf, would bo
on every man's tongue, and every arm would bo raised for his destruction. It
is thus that you would manifest your
regard for your sheep; but how do you
act towards your children? Tho rum
seller, more destructive than tho wolf,
settles among you, tempts your chil
drea to ruin; destroys tho happiness of families; and yet is taken by tho
hand, and welcomed to your firesides
View yonder gravo where lies tho body of a young man, who, but for those
human wolves, might this day bo in
health and happiness, tho consolation
of his parents; but he was precipita
ted into an untimely gravo by tho agency of the rumscllcr; and yet this sad example has failed to arouso your indignation, though your own children may bo tho next victims. You could raiso tho neighborhood to destroy the wolf that you might save your sheep, but you raiso no hue or cry against tho destroyer of your children; which plainly proves what I havo asserted, that you regard your sheep more than you do your own offspring.' "This was plain language, and, being true, had its effect. Numbers signed the pledge; and it is to bo hoped that hereafter thero will bo fewer victims of intemperance in that neighborhood than heretofore."

TIES STSAWSZ2BT 8TTPPEÄ. One of the most interesting social gatherings ever known in this community, was at the supper last Friday
evening. Everything was as it should be on auch an occasion. There was sweet music to pleaso the car, beautiful decorations to delight thyyc, and delicious food to gratify the taste. But thit which was most to be admired, and for which such occasions are most to be prized, was the gratification that every one felt at being permitted to join in the sociabilities of the hour. It is truly refreshing to lay dull care aside, and spend a season in untramclled social intercourse with those whom we meet but occasionally in the ordinary walks of life. The Supper was well attended, and the proceeds, which have been applied to a debt on the College, were such as to be some compensation to those who were instrumental in its preparation. We were pleased to see such a deep
feeling of interest manifested for its j success by most of our citizens, and we were glad to hear the ladies say that they intended to give a similar entertainment in the first week of June every year until their College edifice is entirely completed, and out of debt. We bespeak for them the patronage of all the friends of education, far and near, and may success crown their laudable enterprise. Not thc least interesting part of the whole, was tho pic-nic for the children on Saturday. They assembled at two o'clock, P. M. After surrounding tho table, they observed perfect order while Rev. Mr. Eddy invoked Heaven's
richest blessings upon them, after
which they partook of thc refreshments
provided for them, and then retired in
order to the President's room, where
they were entertained with delightful music by the members of the class, and
several visiting ladies. The children
were highly pleased, and their pleas
ure pleased others.

H.A. WHITE. T. A. Goodwin Dear Sir, In the American of May 12th, appeared a few lines rcfering to the above named gentleman in these words: . "Who can tell us where R. A. White has gone to? He has left without paying for his paper." ll. A. White is now living in Louisa county, Iowa. He has bought a farm
there of perhaps 200 acres of land I
He left money with my father (C. W. Hand) who is a patron of tho American, to pay his arrearages as soon as an opportunity for doing so occurs. Industrious, honest, and talented, he he has left his native State for a home on the beautiful Iowa River. He is no sneaking debtor. He takes, reads, and PAYS for his papers. In justice to him will you publish this, and correct thc inference that will probably be drawn from your allusion to him in thc American of May 12th? Respectfully yours, Jons R. Hand. All right. We arc glad to hear so good n report of Mr. White. So many are running off, or moving off, without settling their bills, that we must advertise them or lose by them. Ed. Cliftok, Ind., Mayo, 1051.
