LETTES TEOM C. 7. CLAÄIB0H. IiMAiroLis, Aran 18, 1M4. Dbar Sir: On Weduesda'y of last week we were at Cincinnati, Thursday
at Lawrenecburgh, Friday at Highland (in Clay county,) Saturday returned to Greencastle, (spent th Sabbath there) and to-day at Indianapolis. During this time we have heard and seen cnough to constitute at least half a dozen letters for the American. And as we yet love to tall to the readers of that paper wc will scribble a little for them. It is like talking in the family circle. When we address them, we know it is usdss to put on any extra ain or to pore orcr the dictionary for words new to their ears. They know it is from Clarkson, and they know all his tunes. v De not frightened with the idea that we are about to give you a history of our travels. When we bo'onged to the readers of the American, they had some claim upon us but now we belong to another master, and what we devot to you we steal from him. "No man can serve two masters." Tkmpkrancb.- In our peregrinations as aa agent of our Railroad, public opinion upon other subjecta crowds itself upon us and aa there is now no one question that engrosses and cnga ges the public attention as much as temperance, we cannot shut our cars and eyes upon what is about us. Tho people are awake upon this subject, and the feeling will rise higher and wider until the inanufuctur$ and alt of in toxicating liquors aro prohibited. Old bloated politicians, who contend that they are "good teraperanoa men," may thwart it for a season, but tho tide will swell and riso till it buries them, and all other opposition, in its waves. We hear its murmers everywhere in our travels. Parties must cither bo eon trolled by it, or be scattered to atoms Churches must more thoroughly come to its help or the temperance car with its ponderous wheels will crush their wails and altars with the dust. On Thursday last at least 600O persons collected at Lawrenecburgh to hear the eloquent Gary upon the subject. And we never saw in the countenance of any audience, a more determined resolve to carry out any object. Desperation was depicted, apparently, in every face. Cary'a ehargo to them will not soon bo forgotten. He has agreed to make a lour of the State in July and August. Let our friends see toil, that they enjoy a portion of labors. There appears to us now, a plain difference between tho friends of temperance and its opposers. And it is simply stated in a few words. It is thus summed up: The' friends of tem perance favor seising tho liquor and locking il up. The enemies are in favor of pouring the liquor into men's stomachs, and then lock tho victim and whisky up together. As evidenco of thia we refer to Gov. Wright's Mcssagu. Again The friends of temperance are in favor of condemning the liquor, and pouring it into the gutter. The enemies of temperance, aro in favor of pouring it down men's throats, and then put nun and liquor both into the gutter. This is about tho difference in the eontending armies nt this time. iiav. Jas. Mitchell. This individual, who has heretofore sustained a tolerably respectably, character, after cohabiting with Wright, Drown A Co. has eomo out in the Sentinel in favor of Iirown's position on temperance. It is about this "Continuo to vote for the drunkard and grocery advocate, and content yourself with merely en doroing 'prohibition' on your tickets.1' This is thu who chemo of Drown, and now Mitchell expects to give it respect ability by tho sanction of his reverend name. It is our opinion, however, that llev. James M. has not a largo amount of "iispecubilily" to sparo from oilier errterpiinvs, which claim Iiis attention. We intended giving to tho public our privato opinion of this letter of Mitchell's. Dut it was our fortuno to meet him to-day, and wo expressed our eullnicnta to him in a way the publio have no business to know. It U use-, leas to attempt to make a great mAn of .Mitchell over this letter or to! m.iguity his opiuiuna as of great importance. They hip only great on account of their rarity. At this day it is a rate circumlance to find ministers titling that side of temperance' We have now, Wilson Thompson, Jamea Mitchell, and a local Methodist preach er in Dearborn county, Tho latter will however, only be a preacher till the quarterly conference meets. Mitch11 is now known in intelligent circles as the "premonitory symptom (till Brown. of (jiiee.ncastle. sometime durintr the Summer. The business is, the institution is not sufficiently endowed. And in view of the
wealth of the Methodist Chureh of Indiana, it is a disgrace to leave the professorships of the institution go beg ging for the want of good salaries. The man of talent in this country cannot be hired on an annual salary of $600," 8700 or even f 1 000. Men of enterprise can make more in almost any depart mcnt of trade. Instead of giving from 9500 to 91000, this institution should give its professors from $1000 to 9100. Ray. K. H. Sabik, beloved by many of your readers, by his devotion to his calling, is doing much good. Having native talent, by close application he is taking his stand among the first ministers of this country. ' He always stood among tha first as a faithful nnd devoted pastor. Three papers have ceased to exist in this place, tho Sentinel, the Asbury Notes, and the Torch Liuht. This leaves only tho Danner. At Indianapolis all ia noiso and con fusion. Itailroads give everything an impetus, and U will not do to move slow here. The pric of leal estutc is very high ruinously high. It is sadly injuring tho town. Lots are 9100 per not nearly all over the city. And store looms rent from 61000 to 83000 per annum. The price of lots is preventing men from buying and building or if they attempt it, tho price of the lot absorbs so much of his active capital that he cannot build or do business, unless he is rich enough to live without business. And if a man rents, he paya high and has to charge it on the profits of what h sells, and in this way goods aro high, nnd trade is driven from tho city. Som? contradict this, but it is a conclusion any one roust arrive at. Ileal Kstate is too high for the prosperity of the city in any particular. Tho large real estato holders aro nominally benefited, but the fictitious value at which lots are held will do no good, except they may enjoy the reputation of being rich. We could enter this complaint of other cities, and particularly of New York. It is driving the business to Baltimore, Philadelphia and Boston, where the price of real estate is more reasonable. O. F.
