Omar crossed in person at Oltenitza, and at last accounts was only two daya' distance from Bucharest, where the Russian force is weak. The supposed object of Omar's movement was to attack the rear of the Russian arm on its march from Krajova against Kalafat. A despatch received at the Turkish embassy indicates preparations for an attack oj the Turks on Bicharest. Russian accounts confirm the above, by expressing apprehensions of an attack from the Turka. They, however, declare that the bad weather, bad roads, and inundations of the rivers, r tyier the pass-te of the Danube irapaaable to the Turks.

Tho Miller Hoy Itlble tntrmnn y lAy ll'rd,glvrth light," The following record of one of tho happy results of Bihle distribution, in Sweden, appeared in tho 'Presbyterian,' about four years sine. Tha Incident isaa interesting now as when It was first related: I leturoed, says a Swedish colportour, through a village where there aroaev eral water mill. A Uible bad been pur chased from mo there, three years since, by a miller's boy, who, not long before had fallen into the water, and had nar rowly escaped being crushed by tho mill wheel. Snatched wonderluliy from death, John, this miller lad. bad at that time begun to be concerned about tie salvation of bis soul. He was not long in becoming the object of per sedition from the miller, the miller's wile, his comrades, and persons who frequented tho mill. All were deter mined to render it imposaiblo for him to read the Dible; but the Lord watched over bim. Shortly afterward, Andrew, tho miller's son, a younj man of twenty trAara nf tk a victim In linhttd nrimnlntv jean of nje,a victim to habits of impiety and dissipation, became lue v 10 a Uisci pla of the tiaviour. This happoned In the following manner. John was Andrew's assistant at the mill. Originally they wert tho best friends in trio world; but since John's conversion, Andrew employ od all sorts of suggestion, artifice, tureatenlnga, ;ftnl even violence, to plunju Ms cum rade into a disorJerly life. All his ef forts were laeflectunl. One day, while who was alone in the mill, took John's Bible lor the purpose ofcastitijr it into the river; however, just as tie wes auout to throw it in, he upeqtd tha llible me cbanically, and this paaaao caught his eye, "Two shall be grinding stt the mill; tho one shall be taken and the other lelU" Matt, xxiv, 15. This declaration struck his conscience with the rap idity of lightning; it tcok possession of his heart; and unJer the weight of an inexpressible emotion, he placed the Uible aain in John's chamber. John Abbott, the sailor preacher l.a. . .1 . 1 II S m reiaies me iuiiowin gooa story ot one of his converts to Temperance: Mr. Johnson, at tho close of a cold water lecture intimated that he must sign the pledge in his own way which he did in these words: "1, William Johnson, pledge myself to uriQic no more intoxicating liquor for one year. . Some thought he wouldn't stick three ddjs, others allowed him a week, and a lew gave him two weeks; but the landlord kcw him best and said he was good stuft, but at the end of the year Bill would bs a real soaker. Before the year was quite gone, Mr. Johnson was asked by Air. Abbott, "Bill, aint you going to renew the pledge?" "W ell, I don't know, Jack, but what I will; I have done pretty well so far, willyouletme sign again my own way?" O, yes any way, so that you won't drink rum." He writes: "I. William Johnston, sign this pledge for nine hundred and ninety-nine years, and if living at the end of that time, I intend to take out a lease for life."

A day or two after, Johnson went to seo his old landlord, who 'eved him Ai a h;wk dot- chicken. 'Oh, land-

Chauu'inbel proposes te Introduce modification In ihf process of making butter, by which the latter will bo Im proved In quality, and rendered cspabld of being longer kept in a freali state. If butler contained only th fst or oily part of milk, it woulJ but slowly uudoro clisuos from contract with tlieolri but It retiiln a certnln mniitily ol caselno, which, traiufor ned by lurinentstlou, gives rlsu to butyric acid, to which rati eld butter owes its disagreeable taste. Washing does not rlltfclutlly remove thlscause of sltersllon, for water cannot act upon buftor, nor can It separate tho csseiue, which becomes Insoluble under the intluenco of acids devoloped In cream. A more complete purification may, however, bo affected If we saturate or neutralise these acids; theousoino will lien be rendered soluble, and, con sefjuently, the butter will only retain it In very small quantities, in a ststo which it may bo almoat entirely removed by washing, M. Chamembel proposes to operate as follows: When the cream Is put in tho churn, pour in little by lit tie, and working the churn at the sa"i time, a quantity of milk of Jlme, sudl dent to destroy all acldityj churn till tho butter separates, but not till it forms Into lumps, as Is usually donoi strain oil' tho buttermilk, and put cold wstor in its stead along with the butler in the churn continue ahurr.lng till the butfer is suill ciently collected, then take it out and make it up In lumps or rolls In the usual way. Tho butter which has been mado according to this method has always proved better, and kept much longer fresh than tint obtained by tho usual mode of proceeding. The buttermilk wss free from all acrid taste, and was much rellslmd by those neraon who iiso it, and by animals. It had also lost ita laxative properties. Washing with lime water has also restored buttter, previously so ta n ted that it eould not be used except for melting. Any other alkallno wash may be substituted for liuio water. Cowr Rrnilu.
