For The In liana American. Ms. Edito: In thU part of tho country we have no Raürocu! and no Telegraph, but one that paise In silence. We have however veritable incidents worth relating. Here U one. Jlr. B , who liven fw milca from this place, has long been the luv of rum, the dupe of infiJcliti and a terror to his familjr. His wife was raised religiously, tnJ whan he marrieJ her hat' been fr some years a member of the Baptist church. But scarcely haJ the "Honey Moon," passed before she founJ she had a keeper of her conscience.yetthe chains ol her slavery were not drawn lutolcrably t'ght, till they had around them an interesting and growing family. Tho devoted wife concealed her 8orro s from a cold and pitiless world. Great washer joy when the young; "olive plants," began to spring up around their domestic hearth. She fondly hoped that tho feeling of a parent would waken up a spirit of tenderness in ber husband, both toward his children and toward her. But her hope was evanescent.. Rum, and infidelity, had gainad too strong a hold. She waa oon doomed to see her children treated with all kinds of savage barbarity. A mysterious veil was thrown over the sudden and strange death of one or two ol their children. The others were abused, tortured, and tormented, until some of theiu fled from home, as they would from the abode o f a merciless fiend, and others were glad to get away as soon aj thejr become of age. None of these things softened the heart of the father and husband. The wife and those children that remained at home, rere still in the power of a merciless tyrant, and the escape of some only excited his wrath the more ojainst those in his grasp. Inflamed by rum, and besotted by infidelity such was his conduct in his fam ily, that for years his wife never knew herself to be soundly asleep. Every lime he stepped from her "he eyed every motion, expecting in all proi- ( ability, he woulJ grasp the gun or something else and destroy her life. In this distress she was driven almost to the borders of insanity, and more than once wonld have hung herself, to escape her merciless tormcnter, but for the faint hope of throwing some protection over her children; end giving them a little care at such times as her husband might be away from home. This overtaxed anxiety of mind finally brought on a disease, that will probably drag her to her grave. Cut the end was not yet. Last summer as he commenced his harvesting he commenced drinking still harder, and became still more abusive to his children. One cveninj, on of his oxen broke out and left home. Next morning he ordered ono of the boys to go after tha ox, but the other boy knowing the ox to be very unruly, and that his brother could not get him up by himself, and also that if the ox was not soon found - that his father would be In a great rage, proposed goiog with him, and as his father made no reply he understood him to have no objections. But the old man ays he did not hear what he said. As the forenoon was spent in fruitless search, the old mn was very mad, and would not let the boys eat iny dinner, but peremptorily ordered them to go again and hunt the ox, for one to go, and the other not to let the plough stand. But the boys, in their grief and fright, understood bim to say that they must find the ox If they let the plow stand, and hungry and vexed they went out again in search. But night came on and they could net find the missing ox. When they returned tho father was mader than ever, and began abusing the older boy, fcr letting tho plov stand. But ' rome one soon came in, and stayed all night and this ended the matter for the night, only he drove. tho boys to bed without their supper. He still drank ver freely, that night and also the next morning, and soon as the man who staid there was gone, he called up the boys and commenced cursing the older one for not plowing, and drew back as if to strike him a heavy blow, and the boy to avoid it raised up his arm. "Do you raise your fist to strike your father," said he. "No father," said the boy, I only wanted to avoid being hurt." Gathering bold of him and shaking him severely, tho father exclaimed, " I could beat yon to hell," (but he now says he did not strike him.) "I wish to God I was dead," said the boy, when the father with horrid rage, ordered him to plowing and the other to bant the ox; but would not yet let either of them havo any thing to cat. When he had eaten his breakfast he went out to reaping, in sight of where the boy was plowing. After a few rounds were plowed, he saw the horse standing at the far end of the field, and hastening to it found part of tho lines gono. The truth seemed t flash across his mind, and he mounted the fence to go in search of his child, but as soon as he had got on the fence, he saw the boy hanging and when begot to him found hira already dead. When tho alarm was given and the neighbors found the other boy, he had a rope with him but had not yet bad the hardihood to execute what is believed to have been a mutual Teement between him and his Brother. These lacti were obtained from the neighborhood, and are known to be substantially true. This is but one chapter of rum's doings. Canaan, Ind. LIS AB. Nebraska axd New Yoar. The Senate of the New York Legislature, - passed, on the 9th inst., a series "of resolution, which had previously passed the Home, instructing the S enators and Representatives iu Congress from that State to vote against th; Nebraska bill. The, vote stood 23 to G a decided majority. So it goes. Judging from these little gust, and the rumbling heard in theistance, we may makeup our minds for a storm without much fear of disappointment. CirTLere are two hundred and eighty convict in the l'cnitentiary at Jcfter.on-Ville.
Kverlon Jareuacd At a meeting of the friends of temperance In Keverton Friday evening. Feb. 3d, 1334. The following resolutions were unanimously adopted: 1st. Il-soivfJ, That wo form ourselves Into a temperance organization, and appoint a committee of five whoso duty it shall be to designate phecs of meeting, in Jackson townhip, and appoint speakers to lecture at unit) places. 2nd. Resolved, That opposition to a prohibitory liquor law, is in the fullest sense opposition to religion, to goed order, and to all the vital interests of the State and of Society. 3rd. Risoloed, That we denounce a law that shall prohibit the manufacture and sale of intoxicating liquors (except for mechanical and medical purposes) in tho State of Indiana. Our demands for a prohibitory law wo rest upon theso concecded facts and principles. , 1st. The liquor traffic agravates and increases, if it does not directly create, the prevailing intemperance of the land. Intemperance by inflaming passion, dethroning reason, perverting or utterly destroying the moral sensibilities of man and leads almost certainly to the commission of crime. These aro facts. What relation our government sustains to thcin, may be seen by a moment's consideration of the following propositions. 1st. Government owes protection to a country's industry, and is bound to guard with zealous care, the rights of its subjects. 2nd. Government is under obligations to provide for tbe personal safety of individuals. 3rd. It is the further duty of government to conserve (so faros it cati do so without interfering with the rights of conscience) tho public morality. Resolved, That the proceedings of this meeting be published in the Indiana American and the Temperance Spontoon. On motion the meeting adjourned. J. W.OLIPHANT, Ser.t'y. (v-Captain Lukens has been indicted for "malicious shooting with intent to kill, "Lieut. Philip for "manslaushter," and seven othe Poliecemen for "assault and battery." No bills were found against Judge Spooner and the remainder of the police held to answer the charge ofriol.
MARRIED. On SunJay, the 10th inst., at Palestine, Ind., by Rev. A. L. Rood, Mr. Johx J. Chapman, of Cedar Grove, to Miss Margaret E. Owexs, of the former place. Car all this lovtnjr earth Produce oue i d 10 strong, So pure, i holy, so divine, At i tue bond of Love. Obitarn. Theodore V. Itlceks. This notice records the death of oue of our best citizens one whom to know was to admire and esteem. He was born in 2?rookville, July 22J 1022. His residence has been here and his worth has been highly appreciated. About eight years ago.by the death of his father, the business which he had conducted fell into the hands of Theodore. How well lie discharged its duties how industrious, how full of integrity, hriTc been occasiuu of frequent remark. From that time, lie devoted himself to the care of his wid owed mother and his sisters, with au unselfish and devoted affection rarely witnessed. His relirous character was consis tent For about fourteen years lie was a member of tbe Methodist Episcopal ! Church, and though very moJest and retiring in his disposition, it may truly be said, "he was faithful above many." For two years his health has been gradually yielding. For five months past he has been confined to his room almost constantly. Yet he suffered patiently. Enter his room when you might, and he had a nod of recognition, a grasp of the hand, or that expressive smile tc so often wore to greet you. Until within a few days of his death ho suffered comparatively little, and retained full possession of Iiis mental faculties. I have said his religious character was consistent, itc had carefully setthe question of his relation to the Father of Spirits When ho found himself amid the "swellings of Jordan" he tried the strength of the foundation on which he had rested his hopes. It was firm I Not a stone moved not a fissure was made ! "The foundation of the Lord stoad sure, having this seal, the Lord knoweth them that are his." lie "fell asleep" on the ICth inst. at two o'clock, A. M. His loss will be seriously kit in community, in the Church, in the Sunday School, but abr. vc all, in the fam ily which leaned upon him. "How is the strong staff broken and the beautiful rod." May the bkssinir of (Jod console them in their great calamity. T. M. K. DIED. On the 19th inst., U o'clock P. M.JohN Wesley Locke, infant ion of President Icke, of this place. O, could I hear that Tolce faln. Which oneo so listless I eould hear, Ji'ot e'en a seraph's K.p.y strain Could make such music to my ear! O, couM thuliinile his warmth Impart, Which onco e'en eol Jly I eoulj meet, Whalecstacy would thrill my heart, That light of love and truth to greet! But now, alas! rejrreU are rain, And tiars no healing balm can yk-IJ, Thou art bo v und the reach ol pulu, Where woes of earth aro ne'er rcrealed. This thought a holy transport glres. Though from my stricken heart must flow, A tide of grief while memory lives, And gloom Surround my path bolow. Co ild we bat measure by the past The Talue of the present hour, And cherish Joys too bright to last.
