Slavery la the Field. ' An ovtrt attempt is get on foot in "Mr. Douglas's Nebraska bill to ovtr-
. ride the Missouri Compromise. The eighth section of the acts, admitting Missouri as a State is as follows: "In all that territory ceded by France to the United States, under the name of Louisiana, w hich lies north of 30 degrees and 30 minutes north latithe State contemplated by this net, alavery and involuntary servitude, otherwise than in the punishment of crime whereof the parties shall hare been d unconvicted , shall be, and is hereby, forever prohibited: Provided, alwag, that any person escaping into the same, from whom labor or eervice is lawfully claimed in any State or ' Territory of the United States, such fugitive maybe lawfully reclaimed and 'conveyed to the person claiming his or Vi luhnr nr -rvipfi. na aforesaid." This plain and equivocal declaration that neither slavery nor involuntary servitude shall ever exist in our North-, west Territories, is unceremoniously hustled aside by Mr. Douglas who makes the compromise measures of 1850 the scape-goat for his sin in doing it. He says that: "A proper sense of patriotic duty enjoins upon your committee the propriety and necessity of a strict adherence to the principles, and even a literal adoption of the enactments of that 'adjustment in all their Territorial bills, no far'as the same are not locally inapplicable." And hence he proceeds to incorporate the following provisions respecting Nebraska into bis bill at the start: "When admitted as a Siate, the said Territory, or any portion of the same, ; shall be received into the Union with or without Slavery, as their Constitu- , lion may prescribe at the time of their ndmission." It is not to be expected of men who live for the sole purpose of enjoying official station, that they shall ever be i manly, noble or independent. They larishly cower before every storm that threatens their opinions with popular condemnation, and make haste to turn their sails to catch the passing breeze of public favor. Appeal to the Minister andCttur che of ludlana and Georgia Rev. axd Däar Sir: At the request of Jons Fbekman, a man of color, we make the following statement to the benevolent, and ask that you will render him the aid so much required, by laving the following statement before your congregation or friends, and receiving such sums as they may contribute to his relief; which you will please remit to C. Fletcher, Esq., President of the Branch of the State Dank of Indianapolis, in which Freeman is liable for a note of S1.2C3, with interest, and which must be paid, or his little property will be sold to meet it. STATEMENT. John Freeman has been a much respected citizen of Indianapolis, Indiana, for many years; where by industry he hasacquired a sraUl property, in the enjoyment of which he lived undisturbed until about sir months ago, when Pleasant Ellington, a citizen of Missouri, came here and claimed him as a slave, and instituted suit accordingly, stating that Freeman had escaped from him, while he (Ellington) wa3 a resident of Kentucky. lie then caused the imprisonment of Freeman for sixty eight days, during most of which time the U. S. Marshal required of the prisoner three dollars per day for guarding him, positively refusing to take bail, in any amount, though offered to the amount of half a million. The writer visited thc prisoner on the 22 J of June, which was the first or second day of his imprisonment; and from examination became convinced that he never had been a slave. "With this conviction wc addressed a letter to a citizen of the town in which Freeman claimed to have lived, namely. Mouroe, the scat of justice fur Valton county the person addressed was the clerk of of that county. The following answer was soon returned by an aged and respected citizen of that place, and does credit to the heart of the writer. We publish the whole letter as it places Freeman's claims in a strong light: Momioe, "Walton co., da.,) July 0,1 D53. f Dear Sir: Mr. Wm. W. These, with the thousanJs daily arriving at other ports, constitute a vast horde, who go to swell tho population in this great republic.
