Tim iln I of Iclmbctv, on tlio went const f Africa, wlit-nrv truant) wit first obtained in hrjfoauaniitu, is, txrhnps, a most rtrnsrkatlo instance of a deso tat rock becoming nuJdculjr tho Hrt of destination for riunürvu ot largo shins, and thu source of iiuimiimi wealth to numerous Individual. Hut Ichabo was soon exhausted, nnd tho dusty treasure that had for many centuries been accumulating on ita rocky bosom wajIUc rally swept away. Tho once bus island lias now returned to iu former loneliness, and the fleet of ships that trathcrcd round it eck on till mors distant enaiU the fertilizing powder that hall fatten tho impoverished field of old world countries W ask the reader to accompany u to tho far-off country of Teru, fur upon her shores there lies an open mino of wealth that will bear comparison in talae, and far exceed in usefulness, the glittering reins that traverse her larc mountains. More than half tho guano imported into England, during tho last ten years, has been abtained from a small group of islands called the Guineas, that lieoff the port of Pisco, on tho Peruvian coast. Of tbeso islands, the largest, Sangallan, has rery little guano upon it, the principal deposits beinjf found on three smaller ones, the niot northern of the group. These arc emphatically the guano islands, for they are utterly unproductive of anything beaide. They are distinguished as tho north, middle, and south islands. The north island has. been cuustantly worked ever since the introduction of guano into England; the middle one ha also been occasionally invaded; but the south island, on which 1 believe the accumulation to be greatest, remains untouched. Every ship bound to the Chinca is compelled to anchor at Pico, in order to pass the necessary custom-house formalities before proceeding to her loading ground. A couple of hours are then sufficient to carry her across the few miles of waVr that intervene, and she toon again drops her anchor among the numerous fleet that Is ever lying off the islands waiting for their turn to load. The odorous scent of the guano ia distinctly perceptible at several miles distance, and is far from unplemntwhcn thui mingled with tho pure sea air. The first duty of tho crew after the hip'a arriral, 11 .lo discharge the tra ballast, and as the captains have no dread of port-odkert or harbormatten, tho sand or stuno U quietly to sod over the side, until there is barely suHkicnl left in tho hold to kifp the vessel on an even keel. In the mean time, the long-boat is hoisted out of her birth amidships, and part of the ere w are busily employed lu bringing off boat-loads of guano from the island, to replace the discharged ballast. The peculiar odor pervades the whole ship, the carefully tarrrd rigging bocornea a dirty brown, while the mow w hi to deck and closely-furled sails assume the same dark hue. On the aide next the main-land, the Islanda rise precipitously from tho sea to a considerable height, presenting only a bare, dark wall of rock. From the upper edge of tho precipice the huge wound of 'guano slopes rapidly upward for a short distance, and then spreads into a level surface that gradually descend on every other sido to within a few yard of the water. Here and there, rough craggy points thrust their, white heads through flhe brown crust of guano, which ha completely filled up the deep hollows that originally existed in the Island, and w ould soon, had it not been disturbed, have covered even these crest of what were once tall pinnacle. Tho only safo landing-place i on a narrow strip of beach, the remainder of the island being surrounded by low rock and small detached reefs, but the singular formation has greatly facilitatcdthe loading a t ir - I. .. . . - 01 snips, tnaoung me crews w itccont .. . . . m i 1 I plish that in a few days, w hich, under other circumstances, must have cost them tcdiou week of labor. Close to the face of the rock the wau r is deep enough to Go:t the largest nu-rch unman, and the steady constancy of the trade-wind, which rarely increases her beyond a pleasant brvvie, enables the ship to lie in perfect safety, in close contact with her two most dangerous enemies a rocky island and a dead lee-shore. lUving taken aboard by her boats sullkicnt guano to ballast her, the ship is hauled in close to the steep etiff. to which she is securely bound wivh warp and chain; two anchor being dropped to seaward to enable her to haul off again when loaded, or in case of accident. Down to the cry edge of the precipice, on its lofty summit, comes the point of a triangular inclosure, open at its base, and made of strong stakes driven into the solid guano, and closely knit together with iron chains. At the point resting upon the edge of the cliff there is a small opening, to which is firmly attached a wide canvas pipe, which hang down tho face of the preeIpioe and passes into the hold ot the vend beneath. The inclosure, uhich will contain several hundred tons, is filled with guano by tho Indian laborers, and a small line that closes tho mouth of the pipe being slacked, the whole mass is ponred into tho ship at a rate which very soon complete her cargo. From different part of the pipe, bowlines lead to the mast-heads of the vessel, and from thence on deck, where they are tended by the crew, who alternately haul upon and slack them so as to keep the long pipo in motion and prevcutiu choking. But, however well they mey succeed in that effort the nun have considerable dithcall) in avoiding some such catastrophe in their own persons; for theguano, after falling from so great nn elevation, rises) through the hatchways in one immense cloud, that completely envelope the ship, and renders the inhaling of anything save dut almost a mattor of impossibility. The men wear patent respirators, in the shape vf bunches of trry oakum, tied across
their mouth and nostrils; but the guano mocks at such weak defenses, and a brisk continued fusiladu of snecxes celebrates the opening of the pipe, and accompanies, in repeated volleys and with unwilling tears, tho unremitting shower of pungent dust. In the meantime, a ganof Indians are at work in the hold, trimming and leveling the guano as it pours from above. How they contrive to exist at all in such an atmosphere is a matter of astonishment; but even they are unable to remain below longer than twenty minutes at one lime. They are then relieved by another party, and rvturn on deck, perfectly naked, streaming with perspiration, and with their brown skins thickly coated with xuano. Tho two parties thus alter-
uately relieving tach other, a ship or . ... . . seven or eight hundred tons i loaded in this manner in two or three dayi, the Indians on the Uland working during the night, and filling up the inclosure, ready for shipment on the following dy. A smaller inclosure and pipe supply the boats of the vessels anchored off tho island. The guano is dug out with pick and shovel down to the level of the rock, and on the north island the cutting thus formed is in some places from sixty to eighty feet ia depth, in others it is ouly a few inches; but these shallow spots are comparatively rare, and usually border on orae deep valley tirroly packed with the prevailing substance. From the pressure of tho superincumbent mass, the lower strata have become almost as hard and com pact as tho rock itself, and the color deepens from a light brown, or some times white, at the surface, to nearly black at the bottom of the cutting. The guano of the Chinca islands is aid to surpass all other deposits in its strength and fertilizing qualities, and this is chiefly attributed to the fact that rain never falls on those islands. Uw tng to this extreme aridity of the cli mate, the saline particles of the ma nure are never held in solution, and are therefore less liable to be lost by evaporation than where the surface of the mass is frequently washed oy heavy rain. Lanre lumps of very strong and pure ammonia are, in fact, often turned up by the diggers. The thick foLT. that at certain seasons are of nightly occurrence on the coast, convert the outer layer into a greasy paste, which is immediately baked by the sun into a hard crust that prevents even tho fogs from penetrating into tho interior The crust is completely undermined by the birds that still frequent the islands in vast numbers, though they are said to bear no com Earison to the myriads that formerly eld sole and undisturbed possession of them. There are mews, gannets, penguins, pelican, divers, sheerbcaks, and many other sorts of sea-fowl; but the most common is th guano-bird a very handsome creature, about tho site of a pigeon, beautifully variegated, and decorated with two pendant eardrops. Naturalists, delighting in hard words, call him tulUta variegata. These web-footed colonists form regular towns beneath tho crust of the guano, the various settlements communicating with each other by galleries ruuiuMtf 1 all dirwcU-mav-iWevc i-ie almost impossible to set foot upon the untouched surface of the island without sinking to tho knee iu some feathered lady'a nursery, and either smashing her egg or mutilating her half-fledged progeny. Tho egg-shells, and the remains of tish brought to feed the young birds, or to be devoured at leisure by the old ones, must form a considerable item in the deposits. Thickly tenanted as are the islands and the air above them, the waters beneath are no less full of life. Shoals of small fish are continually passing through the channele; whales are frequently seen rollinglhcir huge bodies in the offing; and tho numerous caves that perforate tho islands on every side are inhabited by colonics of seals and sea-lions, that wage an unceasing predatory war upon the sparkling shoals that puss, unconscious of all danger, their gloomy surf bound territories. Tho islands themselves are perfectly barren. Not a blado of grass, nor even a particle of moss exyts upon them, fhey present only ouo brown arid expanse, incapable of furnishing food for the tiniest nibbler that ever gnawed a grain of corn; and yet they nossesa sufficient fertilising power to transform a barren desert to a fruitful garden; and they annually furnish jl in other land for thousands of hungry mortals who never even heard of their existence! They are also com-1 pletely destitute of water, tho Indian who live upon them being supplied with this necessary of life by the shipping in turns, hvery article of food I brought from l'isco, to which port the guano-digger occasionally resort, to spend in extravagance and dissipation their hard-earned wages. '1 ho commandant reside on the north itland, in a miserable cotlngo. Four poles stuck in the guano, with grass mats or a few reed stretched between them and covered in with a fiat roof of the same material, form specimens of a high order of Chinca architecture. Furniture is of course unknown, and clothes are at nearly so as possible; but the high wages given to tho laborers appear to balance the itttagrrmmt of their position. Ouano, indeed, has been used for agricultural purposes in l'eru ever since the invasion of tho Spaniards. Large quantities of it are consumed in tho haciendas that skirt the banks of the rivers which flow from tho moun tains through the desert coast, raising in their passage through the arid sand-ocean long green islands of ex traordinarr fertility. The mode of ao plying tho manure differs considerably Irorn that adopted in Kngland. It ts never used with the seed; but when the plants are a few inches above the surface a long shallow trench is made close to the roots, and in this a small quantity of guano is placed, the white being always preferred. Tho trench being slightly covered with earth, the hole held I either laid completely under water by dam and sluices erected for the purpose, or, where no such system of irrigation exist, other means are adopted tor thoroughly sat urating the soil. The potatoes produced by this mode of culture are perhaps the hncst, both for siie and quality, m the world, and the extraordinary rapidity of their growiu after the tarst application of th manure i most nstonbhmg. This fact
ought to furnish a sufficient reply to
the theory that attributed the late potato disease to the use of guano. DlsefcesHeace I Parsal Young man, Is that your father? How could you make use of language so disrespectful? You don't ctrel You will talk as you please, no matter who hears you! If we were in want of a clerk, and thcro was not another young man within ten hundred miles that wo could engage, we would not consent to take you. We should be afraid to trust a boy who ia diiobedient to his parents, who shows so little respect for his father. A youth who was so saucy tolas parents we never knew to turn out well. He respects nobody. If your father is in tho wrong, and you are certain of it, that is no excuso for such language. No one will respect you for it. Kverybody will condemn you. A parent should be treated with respect by his children, no matter how poor he may be, or how large his family may have grown. There is too little respect paid to parental authority at the present day. It is grievous to go into many families, and hear the language daily used by the children. "I will," "I won't," "I don't caro," "it's none of your bus iness; I am old enough to know what is right," and the like expressions, are painfully common. Large boys, and grown-up girls even, do not hesitate to give their mothers the lie, and break away from their express commands. They will do as they please, and go where they have a mind. We wish such children could only see how they appear in the eyes of their acquaint ances, and if they have any shame it must flush in their cheeks. There is truth as well as rhyme in a couplet by John Randolph: Whoever ssakee kl ereaf heart to bleed. hall ftsv s tkll4 thtl wUI roveagc Iks deed." One thing is certain an undutiful son and a disobedient daughter cannot long prosper. For a season they may appear well to tho eye of a stranger, but their self-will and stubbornness are soon discovered, and they are despised. A child who disobeys his parents will not hesitate to abuse anybody. Nri thcr age nor talents receive respect from him.
