.T, - From the Lady's Book - The Hermit of Rockrest, BY MRS. C. lEEtENrZ. CHAPTER V. co.xcLrBED.

While he thus stood self-absorbed by the crave of those whose sorrows have perhaus softened too much the memory of their guilt, a gentleman and lady approached and paused by the monument, apparently drawn by the irresistible attraction '.o which he himself had yielded . The gentleman had a commanding figure and dignified bearing, and there ws something in his face which spake as plainly as words could utter it, that he was linked to the dead by ties as strong as those which bound him to the living. The lad v was close ly veiled, but an air of youthful grace and dignity floated round her, like the folds of the gossamef web that she gathered from the breeze. Tbe gentleman lilted his hat courteously from his head. Clarence bowed in return, drawing back at the same time, so that they could approach nearer the monument. There was some thing in the gentle, unspeak biy graceful movements of the lady that reminded hira of Blanche; but she was taller and f fuller proportions, the hair, which was visible nnder the folds of her veil, was of much darker hue, and the gentleman addre.ted her by the ii&ms of Adella. After lingering for a moment, they passed on with a trace lu 1 sign of adien, while Clarence felt an increasing curiosity to behold the features concealed by that nunlike veil. He saw a faded rose at his feet It must have fallen from her hand or bosom, and he gathered it op as a holy relic. He wished it was something which he was authorized to restore, as it would then serve as an excuse for his following her and seeking an introduction. Obeying an a'.tr. ction heconld not explain, he traced her footstoeps and observed something glittering on tho ground. It was a bracelet, with a diamond clasp, composed of jet black hair, brcuied with mingling tresses of spot less white. He was sure it must have fallen from the arm ol the lady, and that it was a treasure for whose restoration she would be grateful. The hair cf dazzling white reminded him of the long, prophetic locks of Father Angelo; but the name engraven on the back of the golden setting was Adella, and destroyed the wild hope that for a moment flashed into his mind. Hastening his steps so as not to lose sight of the strangers, he overtook them soon alter they left the inclesnre, just as acarrage drew up in which they were about to enter. "Is nut this- bracelet yours, madam?" said he, extending it in his hand to the lady, who turned round with a gesture of surprise at his approach. 'I found it in the bower of linden trees, which shad the ashes of Delile. Holding out oue beautiful, ungloved hand.as white as alabaster, while she pressed with the other the folds of the veil closer U her breast, he said' in a very low and sweet-toned voice: "It is indeed mine, and very precious i, it to me. 1 can hardly thank you sufficiently for restoring it to me." "Shall I reclasp it?" he ventured to ask; and, without waiting for permission, he ei -circled her fair wrist with the gem. It snowy symmetry reminded hirn of the arm of Blanche, and he remembered the eveniuw when he saw her watching the sparkling brilliants with which she was adorned, fearing they would melt away like dew-drops in the sunbeams. With a deep sigh, he relinquished the hand, which showed no evidence of resentment at his boldness, when the gentleman accosted him with marked politeness, and gu ii p Mm a card bearing his name, r. quest, d ol him the same favor. "Lord Aimsworth." He hud learned at his own home the name of the father of Blinche. Though the dissimilarity of hight and size, and the difference in the color of the hair, and in tho name of the h.Jy, had destroyed' his first wild hope with regard to her, he could cot help associating the ideaof Rheintbas. with this very dark and imposing looking man. 6 "You will call and see us?" said Lord Aimsworih, assisting the lady in the carriage, and taking a seat by her side. "You will find my address on the card. If I mistake n t, we are countrymen as well as strangers in ti is mot'ern Bbel?" Clarence bow.d, ihe lady leaned her head on the shoulder ot the gentleman, as if seized with sndden iaintuess, and the carriage drove rapidly away. The next evening Clarence called at the lodgings of Lord Aitnsworth . "My daughter," said the noblermn, intro ducmg the laiiy, uow no longer veil-d. The room was illuminated by shaded lamp-, that gave a moonlight and subdued luster to every object; and. mo ihrouch this ro!t, hiizv atmosphere, the daughter of Aimsworth might have been mistaken for a beautiful marble stRtoe, clothed with the habiliments of life, so exquisitely moulded were her feature", so f.iir and uncolored was her cheek. identity of th Blanche of Rockrest with the

Blanche whom Clarence beheld at the tomb of Abelardand Eloise. It was the shade of ex perience which rested, in a soft mist, on the fringes of her eyes, and lingered round the paler roses of het lip-. The haunting expression of the past subdued her features, i while devotion cast its saintly halo above. jand glorified their charm, ' fhe did not wonder that Clarence had not j recognized her, though her resemblance to herseu naa atruca mm so powerfully, tier father, in consequence of the death of his father , now bore a titled name, and according to h a earnest desire, she had adopted t tat cf her mother, one now rejoiced tu these cir i cun a anr.es, as they favored her preseiit wishas. The union his I blood-stained hand had once severed must j he sanctified by love ere it should be again ; renewed; and that love, too, hallowed by reigion, before she could lean upon it as an anchor of the heart, sure and steadfast. And oh, how she longed that she might love again! not with the blind instinct which drew to the first form of youthful beauty, thai ltad am lu.n. 1 1, 1 with that noble sympathy, that electric at- I traction which blenns the son I with a kin- i dred soul, till they both rise, as it were.in one ' cloud of incense unto heaven. I Weeks glided after weeks, and found C:ar- ' ence day by day the companion of Blanche. I Bound by a spell that grew stronger and ! stronger, he lingered at her side, struggling with a love that he deemed faith lesness to the rights of his supplanted wife. The pas-, sion he had cherished for her seemed a fading mirage to the glowing reality of his present feelings. He tried to vindicate himself to his conscience by repeating that it was her resemblance to Blanche which had first attraeted and charmed him: but the stern

Every day he tried to summon resolution to tell her: but in her presence he forgot every thing but his love of her, and the fatal con-i-equencea of such a discovery. J At length he fell Bick, worn by the struggles of contending passions, and a week passed without his calling at Lord Aimsworth. When he came, he was pale and ; languid, and told her he waB about to bid her farewell. j "So soon!" said she, the color going out of herlips. "So Boon!" The crisis ol her fate was then near. 1 Would he go without revealing the lovei which his every look and action so eloquent- ! I V expressed?
