From the Lady's Book. TheHermit of Rockresl! BT MRS. C. LEE HESTZ. CHAPTER II. cosTisrED. Tha yonthful Clarence felt oppressed by the wraudenr of Father Anelo'n sentiments, and found no words to reply. He loaded far Mail communion with Blanche, but he hardly dared piie upon her in the presence of her wo inspiring guardian. -He felt that he matt go; bat he was not banished forever; ht w permitted to return, and that was an indulgence beyond his hopes, after his first tern greeting. Ho lingered, unwilling to depart without receiving front Blanch some pledge of faith, some token of love. Yet she was anrrouuded by such an unapproachable atmosphere of child like tuuoeence and saintly piety, !t seemed sacrilege to address bar in the language of earthly passion. "I will go with yon to the water's edge," aid Father Aneelo uules,' he added, as if
track with a sudden reco'lection "yon will remain and sit down at our simple hoard. Silver and gold have I nous, but such as I have I freely offer onto thee. Clarence gladly remained, though he co-ild not partake of Naomi's neotly served re past. The agilaunn of n"-s min i sil'iicsi the demands of appetite. He only qunflVI the water of the "erystal well." Tnat refreshed with its Icy coolness, the lijis burning with toe repression of its g'oomy thoughts. Blanshe, who knew nothing of the art of rnling her emotions, sat by the side of Fa'her Angelo, and uuuer the shadow of his lofty height, bent her dove-like eve, in all their dewy toltnexs, on the face which re d led to her all she had ever dreamed of angels. She contrasted the bright darkness of his hair Kith the dim white of Father Angelo's, the oft, warm radiance of his eyes, that seem ed to be sinking into her soul, with the deep calm light of the hermit's, which appeared flashing iulo his own. Her cheek, usually uncolored, like the flower blooming in shtde, n-ogilt br the snn, now emulated the tint in the heart of the wild rose. "And now. my on," said Father Angelo, when they rose from the sapper, which, to the mortification of good Naomi, was left al most untouched, ! will speed you on the way the night will he r'ark. and a few mo meuts of lingering will add uo joy t remem bra nee. You will come again, but von can not bring the peace which reigned in this little cabin a few hoars ago." "Father, I will bring joy and lovs; and who could not exchange petce for these? Blanche," said he, turning irresolutely towards her "Come," said tha hermit, a simnl farewell is all that need be uttered and let God's blessing .oMow it." "Farewell, Blancha," exclaims! Clarence, taking her hand and pressing it with fervor 4a feeih hie awn. The next moment he wis following the steps of the hermit.md Blanche threw herself weepiug into the arms of Nami. "Ob, my mother." she cried, "he has taken away my Info with him, and left his own Instead. Tell ma, good Naomi, why does my heart throb so wildly, wheu it is uot terror that t feel? And wbydo I weep so blindly, when I am more glad that hi came, tn tu grieved that he has left me? Even now I am passing overall the flower of summer, and thinkiug of the aatu un fadiug leaves." "My dear child," said Naomi, teuderly smoothing her disordered tresse.s, there is no shame in your tears uor&iu either. The Lord has suniy seut this young man hither, and ws must ns.1 oppose his blessed will. When good Father Angelo ia taken away, and he cannot live forever, there would be nobody to keep away the wolves from the little lamb but poor old Naomi. on need nut fear if you quit these rocks and wood that you will leave the great Lord behind you, for "the Bible says, the heaven of beaveus cannot contain H mi, and this is but a narrow spot. "Ah. my child," 8he replied, "the world it full of fair people, more of the fair than the good; bat he might pa among them all." r ''Are there any maidens ia the world, fairer than lam, Naomi?" Though in a subordinate siiu itiou, her seutlmeut was dignitied and pure, and constant communion wilh such a spirt as Father Angelo's had given them a heavenly cast. She kuew the history of his early life, but when hs took possession sf the hermitage of Rockrest, he had said to her "Naomi, the part is a grave; 1st silence forever rest upon it." j This silence she had never broken. Even1 to Blanche, she hd never violated Hie spirit of the injunction, or epoken ot her mtsler otherwise than as the worU-ahjunng saiut. She had also religiously respveteu his purposes of keeping Blanche perfectly secluded from the world; but now when, ia spite ol their vigilance, human love had rivaled the divine in her hea't, she could not help rejoicing in the hope that this flower ol beautywould be transplanted to a warmer soil and a brighter atmosphere. CHAPTER III. Tha flower of summer had faded, the leaves of autumn fallen, and paved the margin of the stream with their pallid gold. Clarence came, and Father Angelo, bowing to what he believed to be the decree of a hihsr power, no longer opposed his anion will. In obeying hi will, she learned to listen with pleasure to the language of admiration, and to blush and smile at her own loveliues. The images of the looely hermitage., of the venerable father Angelo, and tne anectionate Naomi, grew more faint and distant, and a dim haze floated over the clear haven of her faith. - Clarence, who at first beheld with pride and delight the admiration she inspired, and whose ouly fear was that she should love him too welt before the eyes of the world, began to tremble lest his Instructions should be too faithfully obeyed. - He saw those eyes, which had hung upon him withsnch fond idolatry Wander to meet the beaming glances of others, and the excitement of gratified vanilv brighten with unhealthy radiance the vestal rotes 'of her cheek. A vague, painful but acknowledged jealously stole gradually luto his heart. He began to watch her, and to look upon her with a clouded brow, while she, meeting lees sunshine in his eyes, sought it more earnestly tn the eyes-of others. Like twilight shadows imperceptibly commencing, yet slowly, certainly 'deepening iuto the gloom of night, the light cloud spread and darkened, aud they Sat withia its shade, and tell a chilliiiei-t creeping over them, yet never saia to each other, "Are not our hearts growing cult1? But while her thoughts Seemed transparent aa glass in ail things else, they were opaque on '. tms Perhaps an instinctive feeling of wrong within herself, an innate sense of having lost something of her original holiness of spirit, ' a cousciuusiies that her wild, i Jollcitous love was a.-Miming a che racter to comparatively calm as by contrast to itppvar tu her iuditference, made herdrad aa explmatioa of his altered unimer. Perhaps, too, a oread that his love w:ts fading, uud that the dark prophecies of Father Angelo were abont to be lulfilled, more than alt enu'-rt'iuleu to this strange reserve. Then thi pride and deli- . cacy inherent iu the bosom ot woman closed her lips to the n iterance of complaint. As yet uo word has been spooken with ungentle tongue, uo sentiment expressed that breathed : harshness; but there wasa mutual conviction that something hau come between their hearts, something cold and foreign; but this was expressed only by the averted eye and the changing cheek.
