The Ppih System is Blindness nttd Ulsery. Father Gavazzt delivered the fourth lecture of his second course in Metropolitan Hall, before a not very numerous audience. He commenced by observing that he she aid prove the blindness and misery of the Papal system especially by the worship ' cf the Papists.

because they nave within tnem no Divine

Among Protestants the People are enlightened, because their priests, speaking, preaching, reading and praying, always use the English lagutige, and therefore the people know and understand what the preacher said. But this is not the case in the - Church of Rome. The worship among Papists is in Latin; nothing is done except in Latin. Now. St. Paul forbid Dravino- in an unknown

Cardinal W iseman, in his last lecture in
Leeds, made some remarks upon which I have
a few words to say. tiesuid:
I hat Science, Letters and Arts never were flourishing more than under the papal
system; and th it the Romish Church ;s really
ihe mother of all wisdom;" and in proof of
this he quotes my dear llalv, and remarked
that Italy is inall Kur, pe tlte greatest country for genius. But he fuither added, that
Italy is one of the hrst Papal dominions
and, the Papal system is the creator of Science Letters aud Arts.' Now, in my liilive
lio'.oitnia, this argument would be called a false argument, becaut-e they are in it three
syllogisms because he i? a Cardinal. If we
have had in Italy at any lime genius and tal
ents it is not becaue she was under the Pap-
stslem. but because Italy is Italy; and she
pjoouces this genius naturally. (Applause.) Cicero, Iloratins, Livius, and Virgillue came not from the influence of Pope aud Popery, hut in spite of Pope aud Popery. (Applause.)
rone and Popery have destroyed our best
monuments and oersecuted our best capital men. Cardiual Wiseman quoted Dante, Pe
trarch and Galileo. O Cardinal Wiseman,
dou t quote Italian literature. Our Dantt
was persecuted by Pop s and Jesuits nd hii
no irs nave oeeu expelled irom our Italian schools. Petrarch's writing have also been forbidden because they contained two sonnets against the Pope.- and the words Boccac-
cia are also forbidden. This is the protection
nt the Church of Koine fur our scientific men
r rom the day ol Charles V . to the present day all the great genius of Italy has been
p rsecnted by the Church of Rome. But
Italian b have been great, nd will continue
to be great, ia spite of Pope aud Popery
(Applause.) Now what is this moral influence of this Papal system? I will produce now only a single argument a general statistic of 151. from the London Morning Herald. In Eng land criminals arc one in 750;in Scotland.one in every 8110; in Ireland oue in every 3011. This shows the difference in crim- of the influence of Pn test uitiMn aud Romanism. (Applause.) The Padre now came to speak of the Women's Right's movement, and remarked that this was American phraseology, as in Italy they had nothing of the kind, although they respected the rights of woman, and could proudly boast of more noble women in Italy than any olhnr nation. But he
would respecllully so. ggsst to the American bidies the propriety -of their trying to free the
women in f menc the "Meters of mercv.
Sisters of Charity, Sec, from the Yoke of the

by ladies. Passing on, the lecturer spoke of the Archbishop's sermen on the "Decline of

SWEET POTATO PLANTS.
MY growth of Sweet Potato plants this spring will be entirely from seed procured from the Mississippi, consisting of three of the best varieties
grown there, viz:" I he Cuba Reds," " I he Spanish Whites,' and the "Yellow Sugar," of Louisiana, (of the Vara species.) I have been Induced thus to obtain my seed from a conviction that a
change of send in this is as necessary as la other vegetables, to the production both of a finer quality, and a more luxuriant growth. I have received seventy bushels, all of which I intend sprouting. Those" desirous of obtaining a good article, may be sure of getting it by calling anv time throneh the season, at my hot beds in Oxford, Butler Co. People living at a distance need not fear a disappointment, as I shall certainly have a supply this season; and I would say to my old customers that 1 am thankful for past favors, and hope for a continuance. And altho' 1 have not heretofore had a full supply, (which would by the by have been as desirable to me as to yon.) Cell again and you shall be supplied with the vrry cir varieties. J.A.GAGE.
