Friends, come up to the meetings, and if you have no money, give us the aid of your countenances. The other meetings at the towns on the line from this toRushville and Indianapolis will be announced in time, as the Engineers progress. Rrtnrii'd. D. D. Jones, and Jas. Osborn, whom we noticed had gone to Washington, have returned. We regret that the prospect & 1 ' for Mr. Jones is poor, as others have made more efforts to get it. And Mr. Osborn who wanted to be Marshal, found that at least 100 applications had already been filed for it. But John L. Robinson, well known for his personal meanness and political swindling, has wormed himself into that station. It was to be hoped that this leach upon the public treasury, would be compelled to gain an honest living for a while at lfict v-.t t-. ' - . . . 1 " this office for the next four vears in this , J oiate, anu woe oe unto him who talis into his clutches. We have a plenty of honest Democrats, who would have made faithful officers, and who would have performed the duties with courtesy nd kindness. But mis gas-bag will be offensive and oppressive. This is the first appointment made by Pierce, which is seriously objectionable. The Liquor Law. In our column- will be found the liquor law of our late session of the Legislature, as well as some strictures thereon by Rev. T. A. Goodwin. This law having been published, it is now the law of the State. We hope no one will ever christen it ' as a temperance law, or call it a iw ! passed by the friends of temperance It is the drunkard's law. Of this there can be no mistake not such a law as they ought to have, but just such an one as drunkards want, and such as they have passed. Temperance men wish to prohibit the sale of alcohol, and save men from drinking. This law provides for telling it i-elli everywhere. it cheap, selling it I And we have no doubt but a large number of the n. embers o( the IiCgislature, from pat sad experience, saw the necessity of some provision to take care of the drunkard. Xo doubt they badexpeiicaicu iir ucimv nie coiuness ana lone- ' f . ,- muddy streets, when turned at midnio-ht out of the dirty doggery. When staggering about the streets, and finally after crawling into some old out house, they have thought of wife and children far' off over hill and vale, weeping for their return, and have thought if they ever broke into the Legislature, they would provide better quarters for the rxroRTukate drunkard. They would not allow them to be turned out so late at night, without any provisions for their comfort. We have no doubt, when the members were drawing u;i with care this great liquor instrument, their eyes filled with tears over the thoughts of the terrible nights they had spent in the streets and hovels, outcasts from even the comforts ot sleeping under the counter of a doggery; and swore in their wrath that it hould be suffered no longer, and whilst they have looked forward to the time when they would be again thus treated, their souls have been nerved with energr.to provide for themselves comfortable lodgings. None but those who had thus suffered could have conceived so glorious an idea. The liquor guzzler goes in for a plenty of it.and cheap.and then to be proTided with warm and comfortable apart ments until lie gets sober enough to drink again. The Tempera nee men believe in cut ting off the traffic keep men sober and t hen they can always provide themelves with a comfortable bed and supper ' with their families. Which is the best! Which is the wisest law! By the way, there is a wide difference ..B-i-name wpsiatnre. Jo believes m pun.shing a man for getting drunk. The legislature holds out an inducement for men to get dnink. Suppose a poor fellow has but a dime in his pocket, and l as neither supper nor bed whereon to lodge. His dime will not provide it. All he has to do, is to pitch into a doggery, and for his dime he can get as drunk as a fiddler's bitch, then his supper and lodgings are provided for him, gratis. This then proves that this is the drnnkrn nun's law. Again. There are always an abundance of lazy, greasy looking topers sitting upon the si !e tenches of each dogfery, waiting for someone to come in to "treat." In this way they keep themelves well soaked with liquor a!l day. All they have to do now is, towards vening to fill their glasses to the brim, and then they can have food and lodgings provided for them. 3ut this ig now all the law we have, and as there may be some features in it f which we can avail ourselves of tl e advantages, let all friends of order vote ,vno license" on the 1st Monday in April. We have indeed been sold to the Egyptians, yet no good rr.aa n.ust falter. Let no Mrs. Pot.pher seduce von from your integrity.

The commissioners of LTnion Co. have adopted a plan furnished by Mr. May, and determined to build a new Court House. It is a fire proof building costing from 12,000 to 815,000. This is , doing pretty well for Union. Franklin .i i , , -, , Co. could as easily bui'd one costing tromS40,000 to 850,000, as Union Co the one they have adopted. Yet they have not been extravagant. We have seen their plan. It is a plain, substantial building, and at the same time sufficiently ornamental, and planned with Architectural taste. Persons wishing to make tenders for the erection of this Court House will find the Plans and specifications at the Auditors, office in Unio n Co. on 20th of April. Bids for the same will be received until the 6th day of May, 1S53. We congratulate our friends in Union Co. on this determination of their commissioners. Kinging ;eoijrnph j-. AB Happy ni a King:." The remark is frequently made "as happy as a king." From the acts of some of the branches of the King family, we are disposed to think this remark a weak comparison. People are beginning to think that the Kings are no happier or better than common people. It may be, however, that the above saying was derived from the following circumstances, nerer before published:

some years since mere was a goon ma- markabi0 for i,cr attainments in "literatron lady by the name of Betsy King liv- j toor," she had, I remember, some celebingnot over 40 miles from Shelbyville, I rity as a capital baker of buck-wheat
Ind. She was not only a good woman, but chappy, all the time, as a King. But at all religious meetings she was es pecially happy shouting happy. She cuiiiuimifs got. so nappy mat sac couiu i shout original poetry, for an hour with- j out rhvme or reason. "But each song i generally concluded with the following chorus: "Sometimes up, and sometimes down, And sometimes flat on the ground.' religious devot:ons, as at least the edit or of the Rushville Jacksonian was when he joined the Methodist Church down in Dearborn Co. Betsy, however, had determined on one thing she would die shouting. This was a settled question with her. Religion was worth nothing with her if she could not die shouting. And there was more good theology in this than in many sermons we have heard preached. But the time soon arrived when her religion and herTaith were sorely tried, but she triumphed,as every faithful christian will. About the first time the cars passed Ifrom Edinburgh to Shelbyville, they 'passed near her door. She had fre quently heard of the Locomotive.but sun- . . posea it. was a wrae and quiet looking animal. It had never entered her head that it was so fierce and furious in its looks and motions. She had, however, heard that the "Devil went about as a roaring Lion," and of all things she had yet seen or heard of, this must be his Satanic Majesty. Betsy thought her time ; had come she commenced saying her j prayers hastily recurring to how she had lived, and the little unguarded sins j she had committed. And the old fellow came rushing on, dashing fire and smoke about him, her faith grew strong, and she determined like a good christian to face her enemy boldly, and '-die fighting in the Army." She, therefore, marched out to meet him and with all that , terror and energy with which alone a : true christian woman can do such an act, SHE FUKrOUSLY SHOOK HFR CHECK ATRON AT THE Locomotive. Just at this time the mischevious conductor touched the ! valve of the steam whistle, and it gave a j blast long and loud, piercing not only every nerve and fibre of the lady's frame, but reverbratinff over "o-len and mmintain." Betsy thought her time had cme,and that she was done to, and falling gracefully upon her back, commenc ed shouting "Glory! Glory!! Glory!!!" In this position the cars left her, and whether she j liy '-and sunt; herself away, ! To the joys of endless day,"' History has never been fully able to discover. It is thought right, however, to say "as happy as a King," and j "If ignorance be Miss, It is folly to be w ise." The Liquor Law. Mr. Editor. I have just read a law passed by the late Legislature known is the Liquor Law. It is difficult to conceive what object the Legislature had in view in its passage. It could hardly have thought that the laws heretofore in ; force was too stringent, yet it has made a law affording greater privilege to liquor sellers, than most of the laws it repeals. In some counties there were j good local laws. These are repealed by j the new law. Even the general law I was better, in some respects, and worse in Dutlew, it any,ot its There is the same provi; provisions. ion made, for selling poisoned whiskey under the guise of tonic the same provision for giving away pure whiskey, and ihe penalty is reduced from two dollars to one cent, as it has been nearly the uniform custom of our courts to put the fine at the lowest figures. There is, indeed, some talk about recovering damages in certain case, but they will be so d.lhcult to get at that they ;v.ll be no terror to those who follow liquor selling. To secure them, further than ever heretofore, it provides five cases in which no penalty is affixed whatever, neither of which existed in the former law when a less quantity than a quart was sold at once, and every one who has had any experience in witnessing the evasions of law will know, at once, that these rive exempt cases, can cover almos.. every saie that is made. The provision about nuisance, and selling on Sunday are essentially the same as heretofore, yet Sunday has been the great day for drunkenness, am! not one grogshop in a thousand was over indicted as a nuisance. Every temperance man will see. at once, that this is no temperance law. and will, of course, not receive it as the least answer to his petitions. We shall, however, have time to test it, before another legisla..'imiir.'. ii.li! n imsseu ine oen - ate as it passed the House, or as reported by the committee, it would have had ! some efficiency, but it was spoiled by j 'mending, and now appears wholly pow- j erless. For the American. School Compositions-Jane Smith Inlidc! Hie It cpos.it oiy vc. Cincinnati, JIarch, 7, 1853. Dear Editor: Just as I was sitting down to write you a letter, the 'American' of last week arrived. On looking over its ample pages, I find a communication from Jane Smith, who seems disposed to rind fault with my opinions on 'composition writing.' As Jane claims the honor of being my cousin.it becomes a duty I owe to her and the iSmith family
generally, to notice her production. 1 remember something of this maidenwe were, schoolmates many long years , b'u, una uuiiuugn jane was never re- , i cakes. I am sorry thut Jane has bccome "A spinster trembling for the nation's fate, X eplc-iina: puddinpv to preserve the Stair." because I am decided in the opinion that her talent is adapted rather to cheesematting man to criticism. Jane lnsy understand very well how to compose an aPi'lo-dumpling, but I doubt her cap , city wuen it. comes 10 composing witty letters. But this is an age when -Matrons seized with oraloric panes. .Jive lianiiv birth to masculine haall:rus.", i and I suppose ' ladies must be that, the strour-!n nded allowed to write. Xow when Jane says that the girls in Indiana i write theirown compositions, I believe she spenks truly so tar as she herself is concerned. Her letter is evidently original! But I doubt that she speaks so understanding- ol the other. Jane's assertion that I meant girls only, when I spoke of both sexes, is altogether fabulous. I spoke of children of both genders, though to be sine, I do think that the masculine ar a trilling superior to the "Little k Tiowinr, litllo sow incr. l.ittle walkinjr.vrreally talkine, M isrhief-makiiiir. promise-breaking, Xovel-rcadiinr. dainty feeding. 1 ap doir doalins. However, if Jane's friends, who would be willing to share the sorrows and double the joys of a gray-haired bachelor's lite, lias sound teeth and no literary aspirations, she need not despair. 111 think of the proposal. Mr. Pierce's inaugural address has failed to meet expectations. He as supposed to be capable ol writing the English language, with clearness at leas". His address is a stelted, pompous, obscure production ailing infinitely below anything of the kind that ever issued from an American President. It may be that it i-s mutilated, from traveling over the wires, and that a eorrected 'copy will be more creditable. Of it inlitical character little can be said. It is what the country expected it would be, in that respect. The Cabinet is composed, as you w ill see, of very ordinary third-rate "men. Neither Mr. Bright of Indiana nor Medary ol Ohio, have obtained an appointj ment. The Infidels of this city seem to be increasingwith alarming rap. dity. They turned out in large procession "to celebrate Washington's bii th-w'ay; and are now preparing to start a paper lor the dissemination of Tom Puine's doctrines.
