Dear Editor: It has been a lorg while since I saw the Brookville American or its editor. The latter I met at Indianapolis years ago, on some Temper ance occasion, during the golden era of the 'Sons.' I hope you are still doing battle in the 'cause of all mankind,' and find your efforts more successful than we do in the Buckeye State, where I regret to say, King Alcoholseems to enjoy an indisputable sovereignty. Some obliging Iriend has sent me a late number of the American, and I hereby thank him. It afforded me several hours of delightful reading, and has passed into the hands of my brother whence it will circulate
through the whole family; and after all the Smiths have read it, big and little, '
I intend to hand it over to the Test of mankind.' j
The extract from Rev. Mr. Eddy's ;
sermon, is worthy of its prominent place 1 in your columns. The corruption ex- i istingin both political parties is alarm-'
m to every ris-ht-imnded person. Some ;
dry cynic defines Patriotism to be "the I last resort of rogues." Such indeed it!
would seem to be in the estimation of; many prominent politicians of this day, j fori really think they have resorted to almost every thing else. j
It is the duty of the Pulpit and Press,
wielding as they do, an almost irresisti- j ble power, to improve and elevate the I public mind which they will fail to do ',
however, unless supplied with mdepen- .
dent, outspoken editors and preachers. !
Calvin r letclier s manlv, christianly
declaration, is worthy of beii.g printed in letters of gold. If Heaven would i vouchsafe to infuse that spirit generally, j
Wr. tiddy would never again have occa- ! sion to nse the extract to which I have '
alluded.

cost the counties nothing. Nor will
any one pretend that the rights or the 1 battles of the citizen his b?en 1mpungd. They yet have a public trial. And as the prosecutor has to prosecute tha cases, and receives no fee when the case is not sustained, it is not presumed he wi!l make out a presentment unless there is strong probability of sustaining It. Time, however, will more fully deTelope the justice or injustice of this system.
Grand Jury. Owr Grand Jury was in session some tren refght days, and found 10 bills. Thia cost the county $ 108, besides baliffs, In thia we ae charging nothing upon the Grand Jury, for it was as good a jury aa could well be selected, and we have n doubt but they were jealously employed all the time they were in session. But it seems to us that presentments or Indictments could be- obtained in some cheaper manner, and just as safe for personal rights and liberties. In fact the Grand Jury are directed and controled in H their deliberations by the Prosecutor, and why not allow him to do the business directly, and with less cost.
