At Laurel, it was about the same. The men of the town were not in attendance. Metamora does a little better. But at FairfielJ we believe no one felt interest enough to attend. And had it not been for the citizens of Springfield who went to the month

the county, it would have been difficult to have held any meetings. But in the coming year, if the excuse that they have their ordinary business to attend to, as ,i reason, if we should hear ofsome man's face being spit at, we should think the friends of the improvement in Agriculture had kept their temper pretty well. possible, and forever. An unpaid dun

is hateful bc ond comparison, a chal

lenge to tight a duel is nothing in comparison. Some of our friends contracted to pay

drunkenness. But they must recollect that he who drinks intoxicating liquors as a beverage, is a drundard, and Bro. Jocelyn dare not deny it. Come, raise your standard a little higher. But says the editor of the Magazine: "It is not safe to judge of any party or society by the character of individual members." Here we join issue. If a church retains in its fold members who walk disorderly, drink, swear, or violate any ol the commandments, that church is corrupt. It is true the church. Masons, Odd Fellvws, or Sons of Temperance cannot prevent their members from drinking intoxicating liquors, and if they deal promptly with them, the society is not partners in the guilt. But if they sleep, year after year, and retain them, the society are equally guilty with the erring. But we are sorry, truly sorry that it must be a daily matter before excommunication! It is not the way we have understood Masonry or Odd Fellowship. But if these societies do retain in good standing those who drink, it is right to judge the character of the whole body by the individual members. This connot be avoided, drunkenness is a damnable crime, national, social and individual, and he who raises not his voice against it at this day is a partaker in that foul an J festering crime, which will call down on him an-" on the nation the indignation of a righteous GoJ. Come up higher, Bro. Jocelyn, and say that intoxication shall be sufficient cause for exclusion from fellowship, and not go so low as to require the delinquent

to be a daily offender.

If you expect to rap our knuckles over

this matter you must aim a little higher, and take your position on the only correct platform, ' that he who drinks, no matter how little, of intoxicating liquors,

is the drunkard, and if he will not desist

must be cut off."
