On our first page will be found an ex cellentarticleupon the subject, of wives

and washing days. We publish it ex-1 pressly for our married men, or who soon intend to be. It is not for the wives to read, and we hereby positively object to a single one of them reading it. As politicians say, (who have no other reason for a thing) it is positively un. constitutional, for ladies to spend their time in that way. Besides, we fear some of them will see in it so exact a picture of lhemselves that it will add nothing to the comfort of us lords of creation. We hope, however, that our gentlemen friends, will so profit by the truths in that article, that by another year, they can let their wives read it. Lay by this paper, and as quick as you can, arrange your farm, and your conduct so that you will not be hit by any charge in it, and then you can read it to your wife without blushing. Some may do so now, but such instances are worth seeing.

But above

Another Forgery Discovered. On the 14 inst., a man in the garb of a Kentucky drover, called at the Life &

Trust Co. with a check for 7,500, pur- 1 porting to be drawn by the extensive packinghouse of Evans & Swift, on the prominent bankers, Ellis &. Morton, and wished to purchase either Kentucky funds or cold, which funds (at this season of the year,) are so much desired by the Kentucky drovers, that it excited no suspicion, and the paying teller of the Life &. Trust Co. unhesitatingly made the exchange, rnd in due course, before the expiration of bank hours, this check, with others, as usual, tvas presented at the counter of E. & M., and paid by an offset of such checks as E. &. M. held on the L. &.T. Co. Things so remained till the 24th, ten days after, when E. &. M. discovered the Recount of Evans &. Smith overdrawn, who were immediately informed, and the discovery then took place that the check was a forgery. Things so remain up to this time. Whether the Life & Trust Co or Eliis &. Morton will have to stand in the gap remains to be seen. This affair occurred on or about the same day as the forged check noticed by

Crittenden) is about to lead to the hy menial altar a beautiful and fascinating widow, longr known as the ton in Washington. The learned lawyer and t'istin'juished politician has lately devoted his" attention to the study of Petrarch's Sonnets and works of a like character.

The Canal. If the great utility we should perhaps say the indespensible necessity of this important work, had not been already

demonstrated, a further and practical il

lustration might be found in considering

the amount of produce now lying on its banks, and estimating the difference in

dollars and cents between the cost of wagoning and of boating it to market. The value of anything is seldom properly estimated except by its loss; and men are now made to feel in the loss of the canal what they before only seemed to know by theorizing and calculation, but could not realize. It will cost for instance $14,000 more to wagon the produce now lying at this place alone, than it would have done to boat off. This, it is unnecessary to say, the holders feel, to say nothing of the heavy amount yet in the hands of farmers. It has' been estimated that the cost of wagoning over boating off what is already on the canal, will fall but little, if any

short of $75,000. Could the amount not yet brought forward.and that shipped off within the year, be ascertained some idea might be formed from these data of what one years use of the White Water

Valley canal is worth. But useful as the canal is, it is nevertheless doubtful whether it is worth repairing. The revenues of the past year, may put it in the same order it was in a

year ago. That will not answer. To repair it in that way would be to expose the work to as great perhaps a greater joss, and the growing business of the valley to another disastrous suspension. The interests are too great to be risked in that way. The canal should be made secure against all such contingencies, but this w ill require an outlay which we feel assured the community need not expect from the present stockholders. It

was unuer mis conviction that we expressed ourselves heartily, in what we forwarded for last veek, in favor of connecting a railroad with the canal. In that way. the great interest, of the valley can be best promoted and by a hearty
