To the resilor some explanation may be due for not hearing from us last wook. We delivered wliat we had to say at the Tost Office on Monday evening, paid the postage, and, until after the American arrived here supposed that our communication had been sent. Mr. ; White our pent Ionian ly P. M. is wholly excusable from all blame in relation to . the matter, and regrets the occcurence very much. That it was not sent was ov- : itig to the discourtesy of a lad who acts as , the deputy of Mr. White. Livcrj- Mnblr. We -would call attention to the adver tisement of our friends Pavne &. Manlv Almost every one Ed., but if they don't it is no mat ter. They have for hire some of the ni- ; cost buggies, and carriages and horses we have seen. See their advertisement, and it you need anything in their line, sive them a call. Uaaiterrcan I.ikiirs.e. Our friend J. J. Tatman is again in town taking likenesses. A iran who has been speiulitig- some ti'.nr in the neighborhood, whose name we have heard hut don't new recollect, absented himself a few days ago, leaving liis carpet sack behind. Wliv he left it is not known, ns it was well filled w ith divers rr.vvls an l chattels and carefully lucked up. Suspecting that the sack contained articles which did not belong to its owner, some curious persons proceeded to explore its contents. A number of little things were found belonging to dillerent persons, and among them several hooks one of them was a Bible belonging to a colored man. Literary theft has been said to be no crime; but v hat degree of meanness a fellow possesses who would attempt to steal a negro's bible, is another matter. That is an attempt to deprive him ofthe gospel. Th fellow should be watched and those who have such light lingered gentry about ought to be m.re careful lo keep their little things laid awav. Sotncrsirt. j Vy tlv proceedings ot the late Atinu-j al Conference ofthe M. K. An' immediate effort is about to be made to j erect a suitable building. We had supposed the Laurel church sufficiently near j xne remotest pans 01 somerset, and capacious enough to accommodate all of that denomination in both places. In this we mar have been mistaken. would doubtless be productive of more good, more results beneficial to society, than any abortive or lame attempt to establish and maintain an additional one. Dut the time for deliberation as to the propriety of that measure it seems, has passed the time for action arrived. Tho j enterprise is a noble one; the object; worthy of a determined effort. It only ! remains for its friends to lay hold of the work in the right way and success will be theirs.
