The General had detailed these things to the Government, and asked what should he done. Send the "criminals

the campaign as this. The pood behavior of the army which was thus secured disarmed the Mexican, and the invaders were treated as friends. In the meantime, the bill in Concrress to raise ten additional regiments, was compelled to make room for the grand scheme of appointment a LieutenantGeneral, and was not acted on till the close of the session. before that time, it would sink before a deadlier foe than lay behind the walls of the city. Leaving, therefore, ten thousand men within the limits of Tuvlor's
command he assembled twelve thousand at the island of Lobos, a hundred and txventy-tive miles from Vera Cruz. Having reconnoitered the rity.and selected a spot west ol" the island of Sacriticins, for tiie landing, he, on the Dth of March, ordered the troops on bo;:rd the ships of war, and set sail. As the fleet stood out to sea, Scott, on board the steamer Massachusetts, passed slowly through it. The decks of every vessel xvere crowded with soldiers, and ns they caught sight of the tall form of their coiiiinander.there went up n shout from the whnle squadron bugles ratig.and the thrilling salute ol" bands of music lloat.'d cheerily ox-er the water. He had started from Washington, as he had said, with "a fire in the
rear," and this new scheme t supplant him. showed what a deadly and venomous direction it xvas taking. His noble heart was filled with anxiety, for he knew even if that should fail, every movement xvould be narrowly watched, and the first mishap used to effect his disgrace. The grand spectacle before him. and the consciousness that he was in the midst of a gallant army, could not drive these thoughts from his breast, and turning to the West Poin t officers that grouped about him, he said: '"Gentlemen I am entering upon this campaign with a halter around my neck; the end of it is at Washington, and they are ruthless execcutioners. Success is absolutely necessary, and I expect you my young friends, to get this halter of for me." Gallant, yet sad xrords for a commander to use who is1 about to peril his life on the battle-field at the call of his country. Uight nobly did these brave men
tear that halter from his neck, and hang there trophies innumerable, that no hate of faction or pervision of history can ever remove. THE SIEGE OF VERA CRVZ.
