but on the contrary that it had been forced upon him by his friends ! ! ! As to his difficulty with Col. Dumont, he had the recorded evidence of that matter with him, and if any one not satisfied would call upon him, and he (the Col.) did not satisfy such inquiring individual that he had acted through out that whole transaction in accordance with

the strictest rules of the Christian religion, he did not deserve or wish any one's vote. We had lonw understood that this

affair was arranged and settled, according

iu .ne cuue oi cnivairy, out never before heard it intimated that it was conducted

on Christian principles. If Col. Lane was so clearly in the right, Col. Dumont must have been more in the fault than we had ever supposed. The Col. seemed to think the worst men in all creation were office-seekers, politicians by trade, men who made a living by office. He spoke against such persons in strong terms; and we could not but wonder how some of his friends in this county would relish, and what application would be made, of this part of his speech. The subject of lies and liars, claimed a large share of his attention. He who would lie, said the Col., by implication or inuendo, was as bad as he who would tell a direct and flat-footed lie. He was consistent in this position, that there was no difference at least his practices have left no room for doubt. It would be difficult, in 60 studied and labored a speech, not to utter some truths; but we think it would be still more difficult in a speech of the same length to embrace more error, whether considered in reference to the statements made as premises, or with respect to the inuendoes or inferences drawn from them. But, as the Col. with "The Scott Eagle," so we with his speech shall be content with giving some samples, ant." let it pass.
