I supported Mr. Madison two terms, Mr. Monroe twice, and wasoue of the electors in Ohio thai voted for Monroe at ihe time of his second election, lull-'-41 was placed at the head of the Jackson electoral ticket iu Ohio; in was chosen an elector in that Slate, and gave my votes assucdi, for Gen. I was President of the Democratic National Convention at HtHimore, in 18,'i2, which nominated General Jackson for the re-election, and that recommeiiued Martin Vau Buren as a candidate for Vice Preshieut on the same ticket. I supported Mr. Van Bu-e'i or the Ptesii.ency 111 LSiU and IS'40. I voted for Gen. Cass iu I Mr, .,111 should freely vole tor him again were he a candidate. Locofocoism selects such men and advocate such measures as will insure to the leader the seven principles referred to by John C. Calhoun, to wit: 'the five loaves and two fishes " The tried and faithful Democrats they discard, unless they will, at -the dictation of King Caucus, make party spirit and party discipline the ne plus ultra of their principles, standing ready at the word of party command to advocate any everything to se cure the spoils of office, not heeding the claims or fitness of tried and faithlul public Servants. They substitute party platforms for the constitutions, taws and established usages of their country, and all who will not sustain these platforms are considered as unfit to be the recipients of public favors." Trusting that niv position and views may be fully understood, aud with the warmest wishes for the Buccess of the friends of western improvements, aud for suitable protection and encouragement to American Iu dustry, I remain truly your friend and obtdient servant, ROBERT LUCAS. Written for "The Scott Eagle." The Alarm. It is apparent to the most careless observer that Lane and his backers are terribly alarmed at his waning""prospects. Big orators and little orators have been called into the service to save him, if possible, from a Waterloo defeat. But it all wont do. He is the nominee of a clique which has ruled the district with a rod of iron for the last five or six years, and if elected, he would "follow in the

footsteps of his illustrious predecessor." The people are tired of that sort of representation and desire a change, as the bare twenty-two majority in the district, as it now stands, at the last election, abundantly demonstrates. Had there been half the faith in success last year among the masses that there is this, Robinson would have been badly defeated. All the outside pressure that may be brought to bear on the District cannot, therefore, in our opinion, change the fixed determination of the people to break down the Robinson "dynasty" and the "line of succession." It is a dynasty which has brought no good results from its ascendancy, outside of the benefits derived by its chief. The people have got nothing the chief everything. The Houston's and Bris-ht's and

Brown's may rave and rant; but the people will vote, and vote as they please. The result will show, unless we are greatly deceived, that the people want a man to represent their interests, not

POETICAL.

I.orofocoifciii Aroused. Now that we are on the eve of the State election, the waves of locofocoism heave and swell as if agitated by some mighty whirlwind. The largest guns are brought into the field and their concentrated forces are brought to bear on that part of the whig army which is regarded as the strongest. All kinds ol dirty work is now to be done, and those best calculated for this business are brought into the field. John L. Robinson, fresh from the public crib, and with his pockets lined with gold filched from the Treasury of the United States for constructive mileage, did up some dirty work lor the democracy of Aurora, 011 Tuesday evening, and we must say we had then never heard so disgraceful, infamous and disgusting a tissue of falsehood, as that which fell from the lips of this man (!) in a speech of about an hour long. A New York letter writer relates the

following incident:

IV ot many weeks ago, a citizen resi

ding up town, who was the recipient of an income of some seventy-five dollars a ! week, was found to neglect his family.

He failed to supply it with tbe allow ances which his ample means afforded.

His wife complained that she was not

cared for and that her children were grossly neglected. She demanded ex-

lanation. !S one was given. The husand remained cold, incorrigible, and

evinced a determination to withhold supplies. His wii'e became urgent, and demanded the why and wherefore she and her offspring were left to starve. The husband finding himself in a position that

forbade further disguise, plumply told her

that she had outlived his liking, and that

he had resolved to quit her and take another to his embraces.

'And then you mean to abandon me,'

said the wife, 'and live with another woman''

'I do,' was the reply. 'And do you mean to quit my children,

too.'

'Certainly, even so!' 'And do you think that this will be

right!'

I do.' Have I proved mvself a frugal, faith

ful, and loving wife!'

Yes.' 'Why, then do you wish to leave me!' 'BecauseI love another woman better. Is she married or single!' 'Oh, married, to be sure.' 'And what do you intend to do with her nusband !' Why, I expect to support him. You do!' 'Yes, I do.' And the money you ought to spend on me and my children, you mean to apply it in this way!' 'To be sure I do. 'Well, I shall see!' And so will I.' The dialogue concluded, the wife bit her thumb, and left her recreant husband. The next day she called on her friends, told her story, and it was agreed that the husband should be induced to go up the

river, and take her back to her father. To this proposition he gladly assented.

The husband and wife departed. 1 hy

had not proceeded over fifty miles, before they came in contact with a Iunatic

Asylum. The ft il'e said she wished to

look in to see a demented friend. This was readily agreed to. The husband

stepped across the threshold, when he

The Enquirer claims lhat the whig have been badly deieated in the Stale election, and lhat there is a majority, on the popular vote, of twenty-five thousand for the Loco Focos. Tli is is about as near the troth as our Co temporary ever gets. We will take the vote for Congressmen, the only one not affected by the Maine Law, aud see how the Loco Focos will come out. In the six Districts the vote stood in 1850, Whig 19.975; Loco Foco 2:1.311 showieg a Loco Foco majority of 3,335; in 152. the vote Blends-Whig, 25,521; Loco Focos, 25,G2ri, showing a majority in their favor of ouly 102 votes. In this computation the votes of one District are given the same for both years; if it has gone this year as the ethers, we can hardly fail to have a majority on the popular vole. Yet ihe Enquirer, in the face of this disastrous result, unblushingly claims a popular majority of twenty-five thousand ! If the whigs had elected all their Congressmen, instead of three, and carried their Governor, we suppose our co tern por y would have claimed the State by at least fifty

thousand. The W hies never had a better j prospect of carrying Maine, and, if our neighbor is able to gel any comfort out of the late ; election, il would be barbarously cruel in us , to deprive him of it. Let it be enjoyed uutil j
