He expressed the belief that Hale will be nominated for President. He also predicts that at the next Presidential election, the present Democratic party will be entirely defunct. That is to say, he predicts that the defeated party in this Presidential election will not have an organization in 1856, and of course he means the Locofoco party. Well, Esq.

CTThe first returns from Iowa, telegraphed to the East, gave the Democrats both Congressmen and the Legislature. But later re

turns upset this, and shows large Whig pain. Enough is received to show that one Whig Congressman is elected, (a gain) and the

other one is in doubt, but probably against us. The Whigs are also gaining heavily in the Legislature, sweeping Des Moines Co. where lliey gain 2 Senators and 4 Representatives, Ceder Co. &c. If they secure a working majority In the Legislature, an U. S. Senator will be gutted. But if they do not, thiseleetion proves that Iowa U almost certain for Scott, w ho ia confessedly stronger there than the Whig party. AH hail! gallant Iowa. Welcome eveu though unexpected. Arkansas. Washington, Friday, August 13. Appearances indicate the retirement of Mr. Webster from the Cabinet ; but the duties devolving upon him at the present time, are so pressing, that he will probably remain until after the adjournment of Congress. Mr. Hall will not be transfered to the Bench until Mr. Brooks of the N. Y. Express can be spared from the Committee of Ways and Means in the House. He will, no doubt, succeed Mr. H. in the Post Office Department. Much harmony, says theN. Y. Times, prevails among the Democratic majorities in both branches and the Administration. It is the aim of the former to force upon

the Whig Executive the highest possible amount of Dublic expenditures, in order

ITSenator Whitcomb, of this State, is said

to be in such bad health that he will not re-

Fonr to Ones A certain Tom Walpole of Indiana, who

was formerly a mixture of Whig and Locofoco, undertook a few weeks ago to reduce

the compound of his political character to

simple Locolocoism; and having sncceeeed, he anuounced the result, and was formally

received Into the Pierre party. J?ome glorification followed, cf course; though it was very apparent that the Loco foe os were scarce

ly more rejoiced at their "immense acqusition," than the W higs were at their apparent loss. The sequel shows that the latter had decidedly more reason to be glad than lhe former, for Tom had no sootier got fairly out of the Whig party, where he was eternally kicking np a fuss, than four eood Democrats came out in the Cambridge Reveille, declaring their intention to go for Scott. They are unwilling to act and vote with a party that could not afford a better leader than

Frank Pierce.and that was corrupt enough

should have been done by this committee, causing the State to pay this committee $9,00 a day for leaning back in their seats and directing a clerk to do their work. If the picture of extravagance stopped here we might

! hold our peace and let this sum pass; but we

find, at we showed last week, that tnoasanos of the peoples' money have been squandered to reward a few aspirants to office, and cause them lo continue laboring in the cause of Democracy, that these leeches may have another opporortunity to bleed the people.

Self Condcmed. George W. Hargilt in answer to our question as to whether he dared oppose Gen. Scott's sueeestion in his letter of acceptance in re-

gard to extending tne rigm oi cunrusu.p u foreigners who have served in lhe Army or Navy for twelve months in time of war and received an honorable discharged, says; "We do not oppose Gu. Scott's proooslxon but we are In favor of qualifying it, by emending this right, not only to the soldiers, hot to all foreigners. Gen. Scolt makis invidious distinctions we are opposed lo this." We call the attention of all honorable men to this admission. It is tantamount to his saying, "I admit that I lied, wilfully and

knowingly, when 1 irtea w maae tnepeopie believe two weeks ago that Gen. Scott wished to confine the right of citiienship to such foreigners as had been "imprisoned" tn the service of lhe Army or Navy. I not only admit that I lied, but I admit that I added to that offence the crime of moral forgery, in attempting to put such language into the mouth of Gen. Scott who has distinguished himself through a long life of patriotic devo

tion to the Interest of the country . Hargitt stands a liar, self-condemned and self-ar'mitted. He admits thai he Is a falsi fyer of truth, of history ,and a slanderer of lhe Great Hero and Pacificator, by saying "We do not
