will do. But we venture to predict what they wont [sic] do. They wont [sic] dare to kill it by a direct vote, and then face the music—"the noise and confusion"—that would be raised upon that "interesting subject." ——————— The Canal—Tolls The old idea of high postage, high freights, high tolls, &c., seems to be giving way pretty generally to the more sensible and useful practice of low charges in such matters. The Canal Board, acting upon this principle, have wisely reduced the tolls quite low; and as a consequence large quantities of produce and merchandise, which were excluded by the former rates, now pass over the canal—to such an extent, it is believed, as greatly to increase the aggregate amount of tolls. When the tolls were so high as to barely enable the boatmen to maintain a doubtful competition with the wagoners, but few goods were shipped, except to merchants immediately on the canal. Now large quantities come up for distant places, and wagoners find employment in conveying them out. The quantity would doubtless be greatly increased were the low rates at which freighting on the canal is done more generally known. By this policy companies are generally rewarded by an immediate—at least. an early increase of profits, and the country more rapidly improved, whereby the ultimate profits must be very greatly increased: for as a country increases in population, in wealth and commerce, in the same proportion will all business on the public highways be multiplied. But assuming the policy of low tolls and increased business to be not only the true policy of the Company, but that intended to bs pursued by them; our object was merely to call attention to some minor matters, which have probably been overlooked, or passed by, as too inconsiderable in themselves to merit attention, but which may nevertheless be of considerable moment in a consequential way, both to the company and to the country. The tolls for instance, on wood from Laurel to Cincinnati, is 42 1/4 cents per cord, which operates as an almost total prohibition, and the company receive scarcely any toll front that article. The highest toll charged on the Miami Canal, any distance is about 22 cents per cord. It is believed that if the toll on this canal was 20 cents a cord—10 on the Valley Canal and 10 on the Cincinnati branch—all the surplus timber within reach of the canal, would be carefully cut into wood and shipped to Cincinnati. The valuable timber on much of the land having been cut out, the balance is fit only for fire wood, but excellent for that. Instead of serving any useful purpose it now merely encumbers the ground. As the land is slowly brought under cultivation, the wood wastes almost imperceptible away as useless. It is estimated by a gentleman will informed in such matters, that there is not less than a mile in width on each side of the canal, extending from Dearborn county to Fayette, a distance of 30 miles, which would make over 38,000 acre of land from which the wood might be thus taken with advantage. This at forty cord to the acre would yield over a million and a half cords of wood; the toll upon which, at ten cents a cord, would be one hundred and fifty thousand dollars. It is for the interest of the
country and the company that this land should be set-

tled and improved more rapidly. A large amount of labor would be profitably employed in preparing this
wood for market; and every forty acres cleared up
might make room and a home for a new settleranother family, and thus add to the productiveness and wealth of the country and the business on the canal.I didn't know that he won so many awards. We are getting into that age bracket when news like that isn't too surprising. There are other articles besides wood, deserving of consideration; and we may advert to the subject another time. As to a reduction of tolls, we are told the whole subject rests with the board at Connersville, that the Cincinnati Co. have a standing offer to collect their tolls by the rates charged in Indiana. I didn't know that he won so many awards. We are getting into that age bracket when news like that isn't too surprising.I didn't know that he won so many awards.
