Letters From Mr. Budd. ----- DEER CREEK, CAL., May I7, 1850. DEAR CLARKSON: DAVID B. WOODS IS DEAD. I arrived at his residence, one mile from the town of Nevada, on Deer Creek, on yesterday evening—as tired and sick a fellow as you ever saw travel on foot, over the mountains. D. B. Woods left here two weeks ago, in company with another man, to prospect in a place about 15 miles off, intending to be back the next day. But neither of them has been seen or heard of since. It is universally believed they have fallen victims to the treachery of the Indians. Search has been made for them in every direction, where it was thought possible they could be found; but without any success.— Woods is one of the most popular men in California, loved and respected by all,— and more
generally known than any other man I have i any knowledge of, in the mines. His death j persons . It is almost impossible for a stranger to get hold of a piece of ground big enough to stick his spade in, on any creek or ravine. It is all held by men who have laid their claims and will not give it up, unless they can make a large speculation. There are an' Immense sight of men here idle) some from j rhnire. hut mn,t frnm nprsscitv a r. f THEY COME! He wishes I should send his particular respects to his friend ClarVaon. I have learned that the man who was with D. B. Woods, was Mr. James Russey of Monde, Indiana. He also leaves a family ; and ils a brother- in-law of Dr. Prichett. There are some men in this vicinity getting .an immense sight of gold; and one of them went to town yesterday, with the money be-longing-to his company, being their week's 2. Dear Cmrkson: Not having had an opportunity to send the sheet dated May 17, I have concluded to open and add a few lines to it. I have been at wonk one week; but I have not yet made an independent fortune. Two days the past week.I spent la digging to find a lead of gold, but accomplished nothing, and of course my time was lost- The balance of the week I worked for 83 per day. So, yoj see I am becaming laitinted in the mining bnpiness, and begin to know something about it. The gold tip here on Deer Oeek, is somewhat different from what it is on Horse Shoe Bar, and also different from that at Awbara. The first, you recollect, I repreeented aa exceedingly fine; the other, that of Auburn, is very coarse, in some instances one piece containing 70 or $90; bat most of It being In pieces of from 10 cts. to a dollar, aud is usually very firm and smooth. We frequently sea groves of piue 8 to 15 inches tn diameter, growing to the height of 100 to 200 feet very straight but they have, many small limbs on them. The largest trees have long, smooth truuks.
