FOREIGN NEWS.
XatItc Iht I -titer front ICuropc Important Intrllirurr. Philadelphia, April 10. The foreign news per Europa was received in New York last evening by Telegraph from St. Johns. Owing to a derangement of the wires, only a small portion of the news was received last Bight. The following summary is taken principally from Wilmer &. Smith's European Times, dated Liverpool, April 7th, 1S49. : Under the influence of more favorable advi- j ces from Iudi?, and the pacific state of affairs "on the Continent, nearly every department of business is assuming a more cheerful aspect. The conflict between Sardinia and Austria has ended in a complete prostration and abdication . of Charles Albert. i The importations of EreadstufTs and Provis- , Ions into England continue on a very large : scale. ! In commercial affairs generally a firmer feeling was manifested in the last few days. American funds agiin advanced, and Consuls have risen during the last two weeks 18 (?) per cent, having fluctuated from 931g on the 2nd to Dn the 5th, at which they closed for Money. Money, though still abundant, has slightly increased in value. The lowest bauk rates is still three per cent, but with private banks the best bills are done at 2 per Cent. The Bank of England returns show the amount of Bull-, Ion in the vaults to be 15,300,000 pounds, so that any draw which may arise from the United States in consequeuce of the inequality of the Exchanges, will be met without the least difficulty or fear of renewing the scenes of 1S47 The weekly account of the Bank of France show a progressive improvement. LIVERPOOL COTTON MARKET. Subsequent to the departure of the last steamer, the Cotton Market was dull, particularly for the lower middling qualities, and prices further gave way one-eighth penny, but thi week Ive have had a better demand for consumers; and this decline is considered as recovered, so ihatonr last quotations of 4?d for Upland aud Mobile is now repeated, and fair New Orleans for its relative scarcity raised to 4Jgd. Middling demand. The sales for the week ending the 30th ult., amounted to 2G.010 bales, of whch 2,000 were on speculation, and 5,000 for export. The business for five days to the 5th instant was 34,580 bales, of which 10,000 was taken on speculation, ond 3,000 to exporters. LIVERPOOL CORN MARKET. The Corn market continues in the same State of depression as last noticed. Trices have again receded. At Mark Lane on Monday last, the transactions were very limited. The price of LTnited States Wheat was quoted at 43s to 46s per quarter. Canadian 40s to 44s per quarter. Very little business was done in flour of any sort, although American barrelled was freely offered at 23s to 25s per brl no sales of importance were affected. Indian Cornwasquoted at 27 to 2?s for White aud 30 to 31s for Yellow. At this market on the following day the trade was dull, aud on Thursday Flour was nominally 22s 6d to 23s Gd; the latter only obtainable for the best brands of Ohio. Indian Corn 27 to 25s for White and 2Gs 6J for prime Yellow. Flour was nominally 22s 6d to 23s to 6J pr br!., the latter only obtainable for the best brands of Ohio and Southern. Indian Corn 27 to 2"'s for White, aud 29s 61 for prime Yellow. Corn Meal 12s 6dal3s 6J per brl. LIVERPOOL PROVISION MARKET. The imports of cured Provisions from the United States during the past fortnight, comprised 1313 trs. Beef; 2534 brls. Fork; -20:1 casks Hams; 300 casks and 364 boxes cheese; 414 , kegs, 201 hdds, and 50 brls. Tallow (Lard,) 42 hhds. and 5786 1ts. Bacon. The trade has been steady. Although the transactions in Beef are limited, helJers are firm as to prices. Little hes been doing in Pork; the quantity of the Western Prime Mess, though better than last year, is scarcely fine enough for ship stores, w hilst the high price at which Eastern is held checks operations. Bacon meets a steady sale, and prices are firm at' 35a3Ss per c.t t. for Long Middles, free of bone, ia salt; and 33a3Gs Gd for ditto Ribbed; in short, the Middles are 33 to 40s, according to quality. 1 Cut Hams have receded 4 i5s per cwt. Smoked ' and in Canvass are32a34;and not smoked or dried 30a32s per cwt. A fall of 2s per cwt has taken place in Lard. There is very little passing in the market for American, and prices continue without change. Italy. Charles Albert has fought and his been conquered, and he is now an abdicated King, aud an exile in Madrid or Lisbon. ' The Austrians passed the Try no simultaneously, and the Piedmontese speedily fell back. Successive battles ensued on the plains of Ver- ! celli. The Austrians were completely victorious in the last battle. Ou the 21st, the main army of the Austrians, some 50,000 strong encountered Charles Albert at Navacca. The latter abdicated his throne in favor of his son Victor Emanuel; and a flag of truce being sent to the Austrian's tent, Marshall Radetzky at once acceded to an armistice. The new King pledges himself to conclude a treaty of peace to disband ten military companies of Hungarians, Poles, and Lombards. Rome. itisgewfatly believed that the Tope will be allowed to return to Roma. fiermam-r. The King of Prussia has been elected Emperor of Germany. Fran re. With some exceptional disturbacnes in the distant provinces, France continues tranquil, aud Louis Napoleon is proceeding in the surest path to maintain his possessions by instantly suppressing domestic disorder, aud stercily avoiding interference by force with the affairs ot other nations. II angary. The Hungarian War rages fiercely having gained some advantages over a bouy of Russians, he soon found himself overwhelmed with their numbers, and the Emperor will gladly seize upon any pretext to interfere further. We shall not be surprised at all to hear that the Emperor of Russia brings down a large force to crush the Hungarians. India. Advices from Bombay state that auother bat- i tie had been fought near Guezerat, between the ' British aud Sikhs; in which the latter were de feated. From the 6th to the Hlh of February, vari ous skirmishes took place. On the lCih the Sikhs retreated to Chesnab, which they were prtveuled front crossing by the Bombay division, under General Whish. On the following day, the British having effected a junction, V , s-s l 1 . I . . . 1 LiOra vsrougu succeeaea lu Dringing uie cuetn y to a battle before Gueierat, in which the Sikhs were completely routed, leaving a great portion of their guns aud ammunition , as well as their . standing camp, in the poss .-ss iou ef the conquer-1 ors.
