We see some of the Whig papers in the State are agitating the subject of a Whig Convention to nominate a candidate. Now in this matter we have c.ne suggestion to make. Inasmuch as a few inemliers of the Legislature and the politi-c-il manaffrra at Indianapolis alwavs control these matters, ami make the nomination some days before' the delegates meet there, we hope they will this year make the nomination in time lo be known jrnerally before the delegates leave home, as thereby considerable trouble can he paved. Three years ago Marshall was nominated, and written to, asking his acceptance a week before the meeting or the regular Convention. And the first intimation the delegates from this region had that they were on a fool's errand, was on the evening of their arrival at Indianapolis. It was then announced to them at a private caucus that Marshall had been nominated, written to, and ir he acceptej, it would be follv, and haseners to attempt to nominate sny other man. 5 the delegates quietly paid their hills, silently waded home through the mud, and were expected to shout for the caucus nominee. Now, much of the trouble can be avoided, and their reelings saved, by announcing the caucus proceeding in lime. We hone thev will do so. This is the only snggestio i we have to make. We hope, however, some good man will annonnce his name as a candidate, irrespective of party r!e or dictation. We want honest men in ftlTice, who will discharge the duties of their station Tor the benefit of the country and the people, and not merely to advance the party.--Who is not satisfied with the ruthless and vindictive party rule or the past, without beginning again lo fan the fires for another relentless war of extermination' Men were formerly elected to the office of Governor because they w ere qualified, and ou their own merits, and not because they served some great political master with sycophantic devotion. I The nnion, unsectarian feature of the move j inent was adverted to, as very important in its harmonising influence at the East, as well as for alia ing denominational jealousies at the West The teachers sent had been from five denominations. The importance of a missionary spirit in the teachers, was dwelt upon, and letters from some of them read, exhibiting this spirit, and showing that the efforts of the Board are accomplishing an important work developing female power on nn appropriate field. The Board he remarked, need increased funds to sustain agencies, and to defray the expense or the preparatory training at Hartford, and journeying to the West, of such as are unable to bear this expense themselves. From this eloquent address of an hour's length, it seemed very obvious, that tha plan was admirably adapted for effecting great good at comparatively little expense; operating unobtrusively, introducing many of the best minds to spheres of usefulness and honor, and thus promoting national philanthropy, nnion, intelligence and virtue. a.
