The scene in the Saloon, which, after a hard . by the States respectively:
tup of nearly half an hour, I succeed? 1 in reach
ing, was exceedingly Imposing. When I bad gained admittance, it wanted a full hour of tho time for the meeting of the convention, nnd yet the galleries were crowded to excess. The Saloon is probably one ot the largest and most majniriVent buildings in the United States; it is Sllil feet in length and Gil in breadth, and it is said is capable of containing 3.iK persons, and in truth there appeared to be' full that number present the spacious eaUeries, which run the entire letigfh of the building, supported by some sixty Grecian co'.umns reaching to the ceiling, were packed, until there appeared to be not room enough left for one man. The President's stand is located in the centre of the room against the northern gallery. Immediately over the stand is a large spread eagle, banug in his talons the folds of two splendid American il igs. Small white banners bearing the name cf the several States are bung at regular distances around the gla'eries, anil altogether the appearance of the room is truly beautiful. At 11 o'clock, IT-nry White, K-q , of Philadelphia, rose and called the convention to order anil moved that it be temporarily orgtniied by calling the Hon. John A. Collier of New York to the chair. This motion was carried without a dissenting voice, and Mr. Collier acordingly k the chair. On motion of Mr White, the Il.in. Jar.s Harlan of Kentucky was unanimously appointed the temporary secretary'. The proceedings of the convention were then opened by an i npressive address to the throne Grace, by the Rev. Mr. Bruinvd of Philadelphia. On motion, John Sherman, of Ohio, was appointed an additional secretary ; after which, the roll of delegates was called over, and a full renpesentation found to be present. Mr. T. B. King, of (Jeorgia, moved that the delegation from each State appoint one of their number, who shall constitute a committee to report permanent officers for the convention. Mr N. 15. Blunt, of New York, moved to amend the motion by authorizing the Chair to appoint the committee of one from each State. This was lost.
A motion was then made to lay the original j
resolution on the tab.-. L.nst. The original resolution of Mr. Kiug was then adopted unanimously. Ou motion, it was ordered that the convention adopt the rules of the House of Representatives so tar as they are applicable. On motion, it was ordered that the dally session of the convention be opened with prayer to Almighty God for his blessing upon its deliberations. .Mr. John W. Fowler, of New York, moved that the name cf the delegate handed in to represent the Stat? of Texas in the committee, (James M- Hay,) be excluded from tin; committee on the ground that Tixas was not represented ou the tloor of the house, and that the g-Mi-t'eman named belonged te the Stat? of Louisiana.
Ti.e Chair ruled the motion out of order. Theconvention then adjourned till 4 o'clock, p. ci. .1 fir-moon Scsxion t oVIocU. The convention reassembled, pursuant to adjournment, and was called to order by the chairman, Mr. Collier. Tne committee of one from each State, appointed to designate permanent officers of the convention, reported. For President Gen. John M. Morehead, of
