Courier and En quirer Til e IVmnmls nr relic lion t r-n lirtnnin,. i eut General Worth as "the 'hero of Monterey." ! They mean to 8Sk him no question, on his previous course; nor what he thinks of the Tariffi or the Independent Treasury. All these ques- j tions are looked upon as settled, and Gen. Worth has already satisfied his new Democratic friends that he is an annexationist to any extent, including Cuba. It would appear, for the present, that the friends of Mr. Van Buren are alone active in bringing out a young General; but I believe that others are just as busy, though they are afraid that there is something in the tout ensemble of Gen. Taylor against which no can didate for popular favor can compete with sue- j cess. If Llav be nominatod bv the Whiirs. the - Democrats will nominate either Cass, Walker, Dallas, or some other civilian: but if Gen. Tavlor be ihe nominee of the Whig party, thin Gen. Worth will be taken up by the Democrats; and if Gen. Scott be taken up by the Whigs, than rest assured the Democrats themselves wviil take up Gen. Taylor. Iutrigne Rgni-.it Cn, Tnylor. The Washington Whig says:' We assure our friends, the friends of Gen. Taylor, that Washington at this moment abounds in intrigues, the object of which is to prevent the people from voting for the "Hero of Buena Vista" for President. In these intrigues, Whigs and Democrats are equally concerned, though with different objects in view. There are Whigs who desire to procure the nomination of some man who is a violent partisan, and who, if he is elected, will divide the offices of government among his clan exclusively. To effect their purpose, they boldly make usa of the name of the honored Clay, and swear that he is their man, when, all the while, they have not the remotest idea of permitting him to be the nominee of the Convention. !f aj. We here believe that Jemmy Polk is afraid to order him to Washington afraid of the political effect of the glorious uprisings of the people, to greet the hero on his triumphant progress towards the Capital. But let Jemmy remember that ostracism made Van Buren President, and that this internal disrespect to Gen. Taylor, on his part will have its effect upon the people." . Os?a. Taylor, in order to place him more before the people of Missouri for the Presidency. The Republican iu publishing of the call says: "Whatever may be the division of opinion elsewhere, here, and in the entire State of Missouri, there is but one voice, and that is in favor of the election of Zachary Taylor to the Presi dency. This has been seen in the public meet ings elsewhere held; it is visible in the sympathy which warms and animates every man, when his name and hia deeds are mentioned, and it pervades every class of society. It is wonderful, indeed, how, by no art of his own no appeals to popular favor the honest and brave, old man has won upon the public esteem until his name is on all tongues, and the sympathies of the old and young are enlisted in his favor. It is such a testimony to the goodness of heart, the simplicity of character, to true bravery and the military services of the Patriot, as not been given to any other individual in the last twentyfive years. Will Mr. Clnv bra. Candidate? The true relation of Mr. Clay, as a candidate for the Presidency, is shown in the following extract of a letter from Mr. Clay to a friend, in answer t one on the subject of a Presidential candidate of the Whig party, which we copy from the Louisville Courier: "I have (says Mr. Clay) constantly remained passive and neutral upon the subject; and, up to this moment, have not made up my mind whether I would accept or decline a nomination, if it were tendered to me. A rcmarkahle affair lately happened in IN'ew York, and which is narrated as follows: A gentleman residing in a Southren St ite, was a regular correspondent of a certain periodical in New York, which periodical was chiefly edited by the daughter of the proprietor. Iu process of time the gentleman Jli i,jj, i ,. and lady alluded to became pretty well acquamcorresponded in a friendly manner. The former, to make a long story short, fell in love with the as yet unseen lady, and offered her his hand in marriage. After mature deliberation, the lover was accepted. His next step was to visit New York where he kept himself out of the way of his intended wife, though both parties nere making arrangements for their union. The day was fixed, also the hour, and the friends of the lady were assembled in her father's mansion, and she was ready i to become a bride. At this stage of the proceed- ! ings a gentleman made his appearance, heralded by his card. He was recognised as the future s.'n-in-law and husband, and was warmly welcorned by all present, the lady in the meanwhile standing among her friends completely veiled, I The clerevman now stepped forward, and the marriage ceremony was performed; then it was that her husband first fixed his eyes upon the eyes and countenance of his wife.
