The War Its Cause lit Connqutacet 0 our first page, we this week give the spetch of Hon. Daniel Webster, at Springfield, Mavs., on the War Question Next week we intend giving an article from the Union, giving father Ritchie's notion touching the fcoundry question and the cause of the war, that our readers may see both sides of the picture. How this war is to be settled what may be its cost and consequences, time only can determine. Serious, indeed, however, mutt be its consequenees, if ie take into consideration the amount ol human life sacrificed the blood 6hed on the different fields of battle the toils, the privations, and the sufferings of the soldiers
jen?agpd in the strife. Tt.ev are our bro thers -men of like passions and like feelings with uraelvee. They have friends and kindred ao mourn over their toils, their sufferings, their deaths. What a scene of horror must be presented to our minds, when wa contemplate the reads along which our armies have passed, eince they invaded the Mexican territory. We speak not of the political bearing this war has upon the operations of our government, nor of the question of policy involved in it, as a matter of honor between nationi. But we speak of wars AO I :C TT . r(1 n.4 .1 j " wiey nave neen, in a "'oral point of view. Where have wean I account of so bloody a war as this? Within 'esathan two years we have had six or eight i' uatiii.s, wnere men have poured i. mi.a j - a . . ,.,. ... . "ui n.-cir uioou ime streams of water where the slaughter of human beings has been not by hundreds but by thousands wher women and children have been exposed to all the horrors and merciless ravages of an exterminating war where towns and cities have been demolished ; battered down, and destroyed, and indi viduals, families, provinces, and even states, have been reduced to almost helpless conditions without means of subsistence without shelter from the stormwithout the common comforts of life. Here, let us pause for a moment, and enquire what could justify two nations in engaging in such a W3r of devastation and destruction as this! What an awful responsibility must iest upon that power whose ambition or avarice, has led it to thus acr'.tate the sleeping embers of ambition's fire contained in this self-same agent of death War!
