Dot tu-ttia-ia h i soma lemai fcitbie features, and wes-lntl n.te smrn lo or I'uee, as intereoirni? it their reWin t Western Commerce, and the future progress of our country. In the first place: In liana ha heen gros ly misnamed; it should have been called the State of VabAh. This i an niifinl name, like Ohio, tint it Has a claim on oiner grounds, which is almost inevitable. The Wubash tier, in proportion to its to'tuiie, irrigates more land than almost any other stream, which can he found. The Wabish and its tributaries, water nearly two-thirds of all the counties of Indiana! Of eighty-eight counties of this State, no less than fi:tyfive are watered by the Wabash river! In estimating the value of rivers, it is quite common to eonidei only, of chiefly their navigable or commercial advantages. But this is a pry erroneous method of estimating their value. The great value of a water course, is its power of irrigation. The spiines of the earth as in ancient Syria, in the times of Ahraham and Jacob will supply w ater for the use of man and beast. Horses, Mules, and in modern times, R-ii.ro.ida, will supply the means of commercial intercommunication. But, nothing but a river, ani its tributaries, can sufficiently irriffite and fatten the soil for ireat cropa. L-mk at the Nile! Its value for shippina or boat! is very little, but its annual over flow creates the wealth of Egvpt! S-. look at the abash, windins its way, from Jay county, on the eastern line, to Posey on the south-west! Look at Tippecanoe. r.ei. Stalamome. Mississ'newa. and White' river, all tributaries of the Wabash, fertilizing an immense track of country! Exrept the main branch of the Wabash, these stieams are impracticable for navigation, bm of estimable value to the soil and production of the State. A Nree number of counties which lie on the tributaries of the Wabash, are yet co.-nparttively new and yet uncultivated; but whose population and production, in a future time, muyt be very great. Of the remaining counties, the Ohio rier waters White a'er Knkhhee (a branch of the Illinois,) Maumeeol the lakes 14 4 3 3 Like Erie slid its tributary, the St. Joseph's, 7 Thus we see the State of Indiana finely irri-rited. ant! that, when reduced to proper cultivation, its Agricultural productions must be very jircat. In a commercial point of view, a coast of three miles on the Ohio, and of fifty on Lake Michie.in, affords ample outlets, both North and South. The internal communications, which the Stale requires, are those whirh w ill connect it at Cincinnati. Madison, and Evansviile, on the Ohio Michigan City on Lake Erie, and Enst and Vel Lines, by Riilroads. The public men of Indiana have seen this, and, on nearly a!l those lines, have completed cr prepared Public ortis. I uere are already in the Slate, finished, or nearly fitihed, about four hundred miles of Canals, and sixty miles of rai.ro.ids. In the crest Scheming Eta of 1S'.i3-6-7, many other wotks were coin menced.aud great capital sunk in fruitless undertakings. From the embarrassment. the Slate has nearly recovered, and the flourishing towns on the Wabash and the AVhitcwater, and the formers of the hue- j rior, are looking forward to a connection j wiin cinrtnati, and through Ohio with the Atlantic coast. The surface of Indiana is about 33,000 nquare miles containing about twentyfour millions of acres. Il would maintain very easily, eight million uf people. On the sUDDOsiiinn that one-fourth Dart

of the State was cultivated in Indian Corn, j ed his text, he looked round on the aasemone fourth in Wheat, and the remaining blv, and said.

bnlfleftfor pasture, woodland &e.. the products of breadsiuffs would be some thiiw like thia: Pushrls. Indian Corn, 200.000.0(X vheat, 50 000 000 Potatoes, 10.000,000 This looks, at first, a Utile astonishing; but it is much under what the State could ea:-iiy produce. It would feed ten millions of people, and leave a large surplus! This being the capacity, and not much beyond the probable results of Indiana production, it behooves the commercial world to look a little into it. There are four outlets for Indiana trade, viz: Ciiu tnti, Miidison. Evansviile, and Michigan City, (or some point on the Lake.)
