From the boatmen we learn that water was let, at Harrison, mto the Cincinnati branch of tbe White Water Canal, and that navigation will oi cn to Cincinnati, early in next week. This is a matter of rejoicing to the people i f the White Water Valley. It not only opens a market to cur vast resources, but it is the triumph of effort, which, on the iirst of January last, appalled the Etoutest lesrts. ,Vtc Ditiriom of the Sons of Temper-fl-ifc. Although the particulars ate meagre, and the dates in some -asp are incorrect, yet we have every con-i-Jenco in the main facts slated. Scott is in a critical situation, and we think our ir.nernment will so.n larn that it is nc ie.-Mry to prosecuta this war with a force Mifficiont to secure their safety, and a speeily conclusion of the war. We want more 'iien and more means. Oar citizens are rot-ly to go, if the government will only c.vc tlioni the opportunity. Scolt and Taylor have both given it as their opinion Hm it was not safe to advance to the city f Mexico with less than 25,000, yet our government has pushed them into danger Mid difficulty, with about one fourth of that ii'.iiiibei. J Scene if fiirior. The execution fit "in1 nmnrmus Itiloy and his 70 associates 'y Gen. Scott, as noted in our news from Mi vic, must have been a scene of horror. Seventy men executed at one time for defertion from the army and standard of their country! They were take- fighting Hjrainst their ovvn Country, ind had loricited their lives, and thelrw was rightfully and riiily executed. Have we n.t t-ine sreonj us wbo sympath;ze with these 70 b.traycra of their country! And although we would not abridge the freedom of i -piiiion, yet we believe we have men among us who are doing as more injury, and who are as much traitors at heart, as U.iey ai.d his associates, but have notsuf i.e rnt courage to carry out their treason. .nkki. Scott. A little more than a year n-ji and the Democratic Press lliro'''itthe whole land was terming with vul.ir ridicule of Gen. Se-U. Tbe old hero f l.tindyV I.ane. who had grown gray in the service of the country, who had nobly M her host9 on to victory over England's hoicrst troops, who had poured out his b'.o.l on the well fought fields in a cause .! at Oie nation applauded, and came forth roni the strife all fc ir red With woUnds e is to be made the butt of ridicule for "p'5 miserable party scribbler in the Decratir ranks. Rut circumstances alter ?rs. Then the Mexican war had scarce'y bf-nin. Mr. Polk thought it was goirg be only a 'breakfast spell,' and if someHing of an excuse were not trumped tip, "wever futila in itself, to keep the old funeral out of ihe field, he might pluck an silditi.ma! laurel and be in the way in Cull re. Hence the signal was given at head-t'l-ir'.ers, and the tune was caught thrughvni tie land by the party press. And then hilly jtlaSe of toup" was rung through 'iioiisand changes. But things altered. 1 be Mexican war became a fixed fact a troublesome affair in itself. And then it hid developed in the person of General Taylor, a great man whose genius blazed ! ke a meteor before the popular gaze, and corned to lead off in its wake the brightv. stars in the firmament of Democracy. The lune was changed other notes were 'truck Scott became quite a favorite ia piven supreme command anil despatched at once to the seat of war. And now he is spoken of with the greatest complacency r-y the opposition press, and from its tone ore would judge Scott had never tasted a Lasty plate of soup.' Wayne County Record. IVmm.k rmt. THE RICHMOND MEETING; A large meeting of ihe people was held at Richmond, Indiana, on Monday last. It vss addressed with great lorce, iy Messrs. Corwin and Schenck of Ohio, sfiil Mr. C. D. Smith. The Palladium in noticing the speech of Mr. Corwin, says: "Mr. Corwin contends, and truthfully too, that the people are responsible for the ads of their public seitranls they elected Mr. Polk to administer ihe Constitution and the laws as they exist they made him ihe Executive, and when he f.iils to perform the duties as delegated lo him, it is their duty to lake from him those powers. They are the sovereigns. In them all the civil and political power rests, and ihey areiecreant in their duty to their country w hen they fail to exercise that power for their own good and that of posterity. He denounced the insane desire for conquest of additional territory as fraught with great danger to ihe permaneney and perpetuity of our government, and as an evidence that danger is impending over us, he unfolded ihe dark and gloomy pages of hislory which bear the true record of the downfall of other republics, which have indtili ged in this ever fatal passion f.r conquest. The following resolutions were passed at the meeting, wilh olhers approving ihe congressional course of Messrs. Smith and Schenck. Resolved, Thai the unconstitutional as sumption of power by the President of the United States, and the wanln abuse of his administration, of sound moral and political principle, have placed the country in a dangerous crisis, which is well calculated to excite the fears of every patriot, for the permanency of our Nation al Union and the perpetuity of our Rpnb ilictn institutions. Itesolied, That as the war with Mexi co was commenced by an .invasien of the territory of that republic, without any adequate cause has b een conducted at a vast expense, and an immense sacrifice of life; and its continued prosecution can add nothing in ihe interest, the honor, or ihe true glory nf the country, we regard it as Ihe imperative duty of the next Congress to adopt summary measures to bring the war to a speedy close, and to repudiate the insane lust of conquest which has seized the mind of our rulers. Ilesvlced, That we still adhere with unabated confidence to ihe cardinal principle of ihe Whig parly, a promulgated in ihe campaign of 1844, and that no man can receive our support as a candidate for the Presidency, now or hereafter, who is not the advocate of those principles, and endorsed by a Whig N itional Convention. Resolved, that the great Rivers and Likes of the West are objects deseiving the attertion nf the Notional government, and liberal appropriations should be made for their improvement, and the people or the West should no longer be insulted by IVesideirial vetoes. Itesolcei, That we most cordially approve of ihe course pursued In the Senate of the United States, bv the lion. TOM CORWIN,in relation to the Mexican war, and while vre admire his brilliant talents, his fervid eloquence, and eminent statesmanship, we honor him for his great moral independence and unwavering in legrity. Indiana Public De!t. X corespondent writsus, that the affairs of ihe Indiana Agency, are in a ptosperous condi lion Ihe outstanding HondsMill coming in and a very considerable sum expected from Europe (perhaps a million,) by the steamer of ihe 15th ol last October. The amount of principle and interest nitv surrendered, cannot be vety much from eleven millions, and il will reach twelve by the meeting of the next Legislature. This is doing immeasurably belter than any friend of Ihe law, (even the most sanguine) expected. It is no longer doubtful about the exchange of the entire debt ol Indiana and the complete success nf the arrangement. Every citizen of Indiana will rejoice al the prospect before us; and een the opponents of the measure, whose honest fears made Ihem doubt, will be glad that theirown cffoits did not succeed. We should all forget past differences, and remember only lhal the present and future is full of hope for our beloved Indiana. In hnman affniis there w ill be contests of opinion, which lime alone can deride and vindicate; and the majority and minority should both submil to lhal which is proven practically right In itself. Crimination and recrimination will not add lo the dignity of consolation of either parly. Free-prest. The Soundness of Public Opinion. We have never known a sentiment so universally prevalent as that of General Taylor for the Presidency; nine men out often seem to consider the event of his election as a ' fixed fact," an event of as probable occurrence as the rising of to morrow's sun. Every day tends to convince us of the wisdon of popular election and of the falncy-of the arguments which are nrged against our mode of government. "The people afe always dazzled by display. Intoxicated by mili tarv nlorv and blinded by the lessons of history; will select a military hern in preference to a sober statesman." The victories of Scotl show the error of such arguments. That officer has conducted the campaign with the consummate judgment, he lias through masteiy of hi profession".,, nlrrfost chained victory to his bidding, but he stands no nearer lo ihe White House than when he left Washington. Il is not the success of Taylor as a military hero, that has attracted the love und confidence nf the people, il is the rare display of civil vir tues which are maniresied in him. The prudence, the judgement, ihe indepen dence, the ability, the patriotism, and the rtindety. lie ia nearer the ideal ol Washington than anv other man the age has produced. A. Y. Mirror. 7et Pilldw.
